Re: PG Offline users #pgoffline

Sorry to jump in.
?
In YG, there was a feature to use yahoo id and hide your real email. If a member has chosen to do this, only a moderator or owner can see the real email address. This may be the issue with PG not seeing email addresses.
Did you download the entire YG using PG and see if you could export member email listings.

Susan,

In order to download your groups' data, you must be logged into Yahoo using the Yahoo account that can see all of your Yahoo groups. It doesn't matter which email addresses you have defined for the individual group "Identity".

However, I suspect you also must have gone through the "Oath" acceptance.

Re: Yahoogroups claims I have no data???

I may have this wrong, but my understanding is that they are just not accepting new ¡°content¡± from users as of Oct. 28th. I think the more drastic elimination (of things like message archives?) happens on Dec. 14, 2019. If I am right in that, you should still be able to download content from Yahoogroups up to Dec. 14.

Good luck!

Welcome to the club. That's the answer I have as well. For an account that has been participating in dozens of Yahoo Groups, owner and moderator of several, since 2003.

I think it means that their mechanism is broken for some accounts. I don't know what makes the difference between our experience and that of others, who've received links to apparently complete archives.

I tweeted @YahooCare (Yahoo Customer Care on Twitter) to see if they could help. I promptly received back a reply directing me to the help page. I tweeted back "Thanks, but that's where I got the link to request the download". No reply to that (yet?).

Meanwhile, I obtained an archive of all the groups I'm interested in using PG Offline, So if Yahoo doesn't come through I'm covered. To me, the $25 license was well worth the peace of mind. Your mileage may vary.

Larry:

It's possible to get a members list with PG Offline.

However, it's a multi-step process.?

First, in the left hand panel, select the specific group name.?

Hover the mouse over the group name, then right-click, and choose "Get Members for Current Group" first.?

You might think you can just select "Export Members for Current Group" but if you do that, you get a .CSV file of one line, with nothing in the file.?

So first, "Get" (you'll see the usernames fly by in the lower panel, in alpha order) then "Export"

By default the .csv will be saved to the "pg-offline-exports" folder in your main "documents" folder location.?

One odd thing I found, however is that despite having 1374 members in my group that was on Yahoogroups, the .csv only has 1364 member usernames and email addresses.? Not sure why that is happening.... if anyone has any ideas, let me know.?

David

Correct.

My only suggestion - name your subgroup so it is obvious which is which. Then no Board member will post on the wrong one. See this wiki page about naming and aliases. And online, give each page a distinctive cover photo.?

Re: yG Privacy Dashboard download #yahooprivacydashboard #ioimportpl

On Oct 26 I wrote:

The banner on yahooGroups pages links to

There I clicked "How can I keep my Yahoo Groups content?", got:
"Photos and files can be saved right from the Yahoo Groups site,
or you can download your data from the Privacy Dashboard"

On October 16 I clicked "Visit the Privacy Dashboard page", yahoo!, Groups,
the three blue dots to the right near the top,
the link to , "Email the code",
entered the code, Download.

Today (Oct 26) I got an email and downloaded a 1.4 GB file.
It contained Messages and Files from all groups I'm a member of, but no Photos.
Not only my messages, but all messages, including full email addresses,
in mbox format. Incliding GMF (76 MB zipped), YGOG, LH.
And all Files and Links.
On Oct 26 I deleted the downloaded file from yahooGroups website
and requested the download again. On Nov 2 the second download was ready.
This time it contained photos uploaded only by me
but messages (with full email addresses) and Files from all members
for all groups where I'm a member (not only where I'm moderator or owner).

I wrote a program to import messages downloaded from yahooGroups this way
into a .io group or subgroup via email.
Import is slow because soon groups.io says:

500 We have received more than 40 messages in 30 minutes from you. To guard
against autoresponder mail loops, we must reject additional messages from you
temporarily. Please try again later.
Here "you" means email address in "From" of message to import.
After the backlog of importing "easy group transfer" clears in December,
users of my program can petition Mark to exempt from this check
if "HELO import.messages.from.yahoogroups"
(it's how my program identifies itself to groups.io).

You can download this my program from

Instructions are in the beginning of the program,
here I copy them:

# Import yahooGroup messages downloaded from Privacy Dashboard
# into groups.io via email direct-to-MX.
# Your IP-address must have RDNS; your ISP must not block port 25.
# How to check RDNS: on there must be something after
# "Host name:", or else groups.io refuses mail directly from your computer.
# In such case you can run this program on a web-hosting,
# invoking it with a web-browser.

# This program can be used under Windows, MacOSX, Linux, FreeBSD etc.:
# 1. Unzip the download from Privacy Dashboard
#
# (only the file messages.zip is used).
# 2. Create a directory (folder), if under Windows then C:\perl
# Everything will be in that directory.
# 3. (only Windows) download to that directory and unzip:
# (32bit)
# or (64bit)
# 4. Unzip the ioimport.zip file with this program
# and the messages.zip file (containing one or more files) into same directory.
# 5. Subscribe a new email address to the .io group, in Members set its
# display name to single dot. Messages from currently non-members
# and moderated members will be imported with that email address in "From:",
# original email address inserted into the top of message body.
# 6. From your group on groups.io website in Admin - Members right-click the
# Download button, save memberlist.csv into the same directory;
# 7. in Admin - Settings, Moderated must not be checked;
# 8. in Hashtags press Create Hashtag, enter #mi , check No Email
# and press Create Hashtag ("mi" means "message import").
# 9. Run this program (if under Windows then run portableshell.bat in that
# directory, type
# perl ioimport.pl
# and press Enter), it creates needchange.txt file with email addresses
# from the messages to import which are currently not subscribed
# to the .io group, or moderated, or have another problematic status.
# 10. You can optionally create (in the same directory) map.txt file,
# each line with two email addresses (separated with blanks, tabs or commas):
# email address in yahooGroup archive (from needchange.txt)
# and email address of the same person currently subscribed to the .io group.
# 11. Run the program again, look again into needchange.txt file.
# You can add to map.txt and run this program again several times.
# 12. In the same directory create file fromto.txt with one line with
# two email addresses: the email address you created and subscribed
# and email address of the .io group or subgroup.
# 13. Optionally run the program again, it sends an email to +help
# in order to check that it can email to groups.io directly from your computer
# (that your ISP doesn't block port 25 and your IP-address has RDNS).
# The mailbox you subscribed should receive an email with Subject beginning
# from "Automated help for the".
# 14. In the same directory create goahead.txt file (with empty content
# or any content).
# 15. Run this program again, import begins. If it fails, you can run
# this program again as many times as needed, it'll skip already imported
# messages and resume from the failed message.
# 16. Delete the fromto.txt file
# and the files with .mbox. in their names extracted from messages.zip
# (they would be wrong if you want to import messages from another yahooGroup).
# 17. On groups.io website in Hashtags under #mi press Edit, Delete, Yes.

However, some people prefer to put this kind of info in their wiki instead. Or you could put that info in a message and pin it to the top of your Messages display, or on your home page.

Generally, you can put it anywhere in GIO that supports hyperlinks.

Hope this helps,

However, out of a list of 1374 members, I see in my "statistics" that "282 email addresses were not added because they were bouncing."

(I would have quoted other parts but don't want to "overquote".)

I suspect that your experience is not untypical; we had a similar experience when we migrated nearly 2 years ago. As well as accumulating "bouncers" we had quite a number who baled out shortly after the move and more than a few who "were removed for marking a message as spam". I suspect that you still have that joy to come, so if you get the chance please have a read here. (From the GMF wiki)

Over time group members lose interest and perhaps put themselves on No Email, but never quite get around to leaving "just in case" and the migration to Groups.io serves as a trigger to finally step down. Some, unfortunately, pass away but their addresses remain listed and sooner or late start bouncing. Some change email addresses at some point and forget to implement that change in long - forgotten groups.

Although it can be tedious it may be worth checking each bouncing member's entries in the Activity Log; it would not surprise me in the least to hear that many of the bouncers / leavers have little or no activity, or at least no recent activity.

FWIW at the time of writing "my" group of 2215 members has 182 listed as bouncing; every now and then I have a purge and delete them completely, usually after checking the log as outlined above. The number will then slowly creep up again.

In short I don't think your experience is in any way unusual. IMHO there is no point in having an impressive number of members if a "significant" proportion of them are inactive or moribund... or no longer with us.

Chris
