Accepting new member requests before transfer is complete?

Edward Borg

Hi Group;

Should we be accepting new members requests or wait for the transfer to complete?
Do you think it would affect the transfer?
Maybe they are using different emails and might have more than one membership once transfer is complete.
Plus, I know some may start posting to the group or start uploading content.

Sincerely;
Edward Borg

Changing group name while transferring from Yahoo

I noticed the other day a message on here stating groups could not have an underscore in the name. I had created my group 4 years ago, but only started the transfer process last week. We are at level 3 and wasn't sure if it would disrupt the transfer if I remove the underscore now.

I see here how to make the change, but don't want to have to start from square one in the transfer. We are 191 in the queue.

Thanks,
Sara

#transfer #transfer

Hi:? I requested transfer of yahoo group "NYC-MM", invited the groups.io agent, made [email protected]?a moderator, and the transfer appears to be in the migration queue, working its way up.? But I notice the moderator [email protected]?has disappeared in the NYC-MM group.? Do I need to reinvite the agent?? I am worried that my group will work its way to the front of the migration queue and the agent won't be able to make the transfer, not being a moderator anymore.

Also, it would appear that the agent should be designated "Owner" rather than "Moderator" to accomplish needed transfer tasks.? Thoughts on this as well???

Thanks.
Gary Hauser
Owner, NYC-MM group on groups.io and Yahoo

Bonnie -- Are you talking about the Invite, or the Welcome notice?

An invitation has canned wording as you noted, and does contain an email address, but does not actually instruct anyone to post there.

The default Welcome notice can be overridden by creating a custom one from scratch and making it Active.

Thank you for the explanation! I do have a restricted group but I didn't understand why it was a part of accepting new members.

Re: How long does signup take?

Ok, thanks Duane...

I had thought from other posts that 12 hours was considered to be an extreme time. ?Now I know "soon" means 3-4 days I'm not to worry so much.

Re: moving emails from yahoo to io

Florian....

I would like to thank you for your post.? Many will benefit.? When I started using a unix port, only freeBSD was available.? Then I moved to linux.? I vaguely recall the commands you have in your answer.? When a GUI interface came out, i moved.? I regret not keeping up my skills at the command line.?

I will hit the books.? This is a elegant solution.

Thank you for taking the time to post.

Only Moderators and Owners can post to an Announcement group. Did you actually make this person a Moderator (pull down the "Role" menu), or are you instead using one of the overrides in the "Posting Privileges" section? If you did the latter, it will not work.

Be sure to save any changes.

? Interested in your topic as I am also just setting up an Announcements Only mailing list.

The intro letter that people get states that they can post in the "canned" info that is sent to them, with my additional added text below stating it is announcement only, and I've made it so only moderators can post (only me) but they still think they can because of the canned text at the top of the welcome message.

Any way to change that?

On an Announcement type group, only moderators can post, regardless of which settings you choose for the member (i.e., Override: not moderated)? In order for them to post, you'd need to make them a moderator.? They must also send from the email address that has moderator privileges.

Re: Accepting new members

Susan,

"Claim" is an automatic status that is set when a moderator interacts with a message that needs moderation.
You can moderate by email as well - just click reply and send an essentially blank email.

It wouldn't necessarily be part of accepting new members. If you don't have a restricted group, new members will be accepted automatically.
If you want to be able to assess the potential member, use a Pending Subscription notice. The potential member will automatically be sent an email with your customized message. Replies go to owner emails.

Glitchy Yahoo

Yahoo is glitchier than ever.? Currently, on two of my groups that I am transferring when I try to add groups.io as a moderator, that "button" is not functioning (and, yes, I am the owner).? I had the same problem with another group for several days until the button finally went live again.? Yet my fourth group, the button has always been live.
Hopefully, this will resolve eventually.? Anybody else facing this problem?

Re: Group Occupying 2.1GB of its 1GB

Ken,
? I just finished transferring 3634?photos (2.3 GB) of Narrow gauge railways from a YG list? I chose an image size maximum of 1024 x 1024 pixels,? The new storage used is 448 MB, less than half of what is available for a free list.
I downloaded the images from the YG photo directory to my PC hard drive.? I uploaded them an album at a time into groups.io.? I uploaded about 15 albums a hour.? groups.io automatically resized them to my
maximum image size of 1024 x 1024.? Image quality of the resized images looks identical on my LG and HP 32" monitors when compared to the original images.

? ?Groups.io has limited delete functions; you can either delete a single image or a single photo album.? I had an instance where I had manually double loaded an album.? It was easier to delete the album and upload again the photos for that
album than to individually delete images.? Groups.io does not automatically delete images in the Photo directory, only photos that may have been attached to messages.? Yes you have to manually delete photo album by photo album.? It is not hard and you should be able to delete 50 albums of 60 images each in less than ten minutes.

I would reconsider your maximum image size settings, if you had chosen 'unrestricted' or a size larger than 1024 x 1024 pixels; you likely have some space wasters.

Thanks Bruce

Postings on my group regularly have attachments, I've been monitoring this "issue" for a while. Nothing happens.

I'm not sure whether to regard it as a problem or not. The only problem it causes us at the moment is no-one can upload files or photos directly.

Well Ken, I didn't read your message carefully.

Obviously, you *didn't* do a transfer, or you would be on the Premium plan right now, and would have a 10 GB allocation, not 1 GB.

Duh.

I don't know what triggers the actual deletion of attachments to remain under quota, using that setting you mentioned. Consider sending a message with an attachment to see what happens, and please report back on your findings.

Anyway, my advice is unchanged...delete stuff yourself as best you can, using the instructions in the wiki page that I linked to you.?
