Well, I am wrong on this one. The activity log IS migrated, but the date/timestamps are all changed to the date of migration. And all the text data (including email addresses) remain in it.

My bad!

Re: FAQ on transferring from YahooGroups #howtoguide #transfer #yahoo

Hi Herman, it is been said time and time again, that the 110 has to be paid upfront in order to get a full transfer

Hi,

So i started a group with a monthly payment plan. Is that enough to use the Transfer Agent or do i really need to pay 110 up front?

I have 4 groups on Yahoo that i would like to transfer to this 1 group on Groups.io
Is this possible?

Kind regards
Hermen

Re: When the group is down for maintenance, are pending messages held?

Rachel, any messages that or St. During the downtime, will be put in the queue and when the system is back up, does messages will post.

Should members be told to be patient or to NOT send messages during this timeframe?

Thanks,

Re: Transfer two Yahoo groups to one GIO group? #transfer #yahoo

Many thanks, Duane, that's great!

Can I also ask what happens with email addresses if one of the transferred groups is installed as a subgroup; might there be duplicates then, please?

TIA, Roger

Hermen -- You really need to pay $110 up front. The agent is not going to do your transfer for you only to have you "change your mind."

I have 4 groups on Yahoo that i would like to transfer to this 1 group on Groups.io
Is this possible??
It is possible, if you're sure that's what you really want to do.

Rachel -- Yes. All queued mail will be processed when the servers come back up.

Should members be told to be patient or to NOT send messages during this timeframe?
Doesn't matter, really. I have told the people in my groups, mainly to alert them that the web interface will be unavailable for awhile.

Yep. I'm surprised no one has asked about this before now.

1. If we choose to NOT transfer the "Members" data, will the messages show with the Yahoo! Alias still or will it be substituted with "Unknown"/"Anonymous" or will it use the Group.IO account the messages are transferred to? Also will these messages/threads still be able available to post new information??
Pretty sure it will still show the Yahoo alias ("Display Name", in groups.io parlance).

It's kinda hard to explain without an example. It's entirely possible for two subscribers in your group to have the same Display Name. In groups.io -- and probably Y!G too, -- message "ownership" is actually tracked by an invisible number called a "posterid", not by any text string.?

So if you leave the members behind during a transfer, that message will no longer be associated with any "posterid" within groups.io, because such an account does not exist. For example, you won't be able to "find" other posts by that person by searching on "all posts by this member." But the text metadata?will remain in the message base, whether the associated member is migrated or not. Specifically, the from address is not munged or changed to "anonymous."

I hope that made sense.

2. If we choose to NOT transfer the "Members" data, will any email accounts from Yahoo! Groups be migrated over? So for example if someone?s email account is found in the "message history" of a thread or the "Activity Log" (that would possibly be migrated from Yahoo! Groups)??
The Yahoo activity log is not migrated. Also, the transfer agent will not parse message bodies for email addresses, remove member information, phone numbers, etc from quoted text, or anything like that. If that concerns you, you'd probably be ahead of the game just creating a new group and starting afresh.

Thank you for your time and we understand that you are receiving many more questions then a week ago so we will be patient :)?
I just hope that I somehow managed to answer your question. If not, it might be useful to know exactly what might be concerning you.

Bruce

Re: Transferring Yahoo messages manually to groups.io #transfer #manually

I've done it both ways:
  1. To a Free account
  2. By Easy Transfer to a Premium account
No question, #2 gives a far superior replica.

What I did for #1, as outlined by the previous post was to use PB Offline 4 to download Files, Photos, Messages, Links, Members to its database. The Files and Photos files are not in its database but sit in folders following their hierarchy on Yahoo. I uploaded those en masse to the g.io Files. Note that none of the metadata comes with them so I painstakingly edited one by one to copy them over from Y!G. The messages can be exported from PBO in a few ways as a single file of all messages or in chunks of 50 per file. I've uploaded those to Files.

Nothing in Files can be previewed; everything downloads. You cannot search contents without downloading. G.io has the content but it is pretty useless as is. However, if Owners/Moderators/Experts have the downloaded content and are adept at using various tools to search, copy and post the good stuff (either unilaterally or in response to queries), the more valuable content could resurface in the new group. That might be an advantage in some ways for long standing groups that have become cluttered.

The developer of PBO also offers a $100 transfer service to a bulletin board plugin on WordPress. I don't know how good that might be but, having done my own migration from the now defunct Wikispaces to a hosted WP site, it is probably feasible to do so oneself, given the right skillset. I spent dozens of hours doing it myself with an inadequate skillset.

Re: A few questions about the yahoo change

Susan,

The first time I tried to invite to join my YG I had the same issue. Long story short, I believe the problem was a typo on my part. I may well have sent the first invite to groups.i.o. (note the extra period). I suspected, and Don strongly suggested, that if the transfer status bar on the page didn't acknowledge receipt of my invitation then they probably didn't get it. So, I sent a second invitation, taking extra care with the address, and the transfer status bar on the .io page very quickly changed to a confirmation that my invitation had been received.?

Re: Adding a gigunda group

Last year I transferred a Yahoo group with over 640,000 messages with no problems. I was watching the message numbers increment at groups.io, and it did take a while for all of them to arrive!

Not until you're sure you have a transfer in process. Go back to?/yahootransfer, pull down the Existing Transfers menu and make sure something is there.

If something is, then you can proceed to go to your Yahoo Group and invite the transfer agent again.

If there still isn't anything there, you need to click on "Set Up New Transfer" again, and be sure to put JUST THE GROUP NAMES in the two boxes (leave off all the @domain stuff). I admit that I'm just taking a guess at the problem, but you wouldn't be the first person who tried to do this by putting email addresses in those boxes instead of the group names.

Good luck,
Bruce

Leaving a member behind in transfer #members #transfer

Inserting (and acciently deleting) photos

So I am experiencing a brain freeze.

I inserted a local pic into a message, ('er post.)?
Then accidentally deleted it during editing.?

So I wanted to re-insert the SAVED pic (I had dome some pic editing,) rather than upload another (I ass/u/me that the pic gets saved in MarkCyberSpace as soon as you hit SAVE and it's inserted?.)?

But -- I couldn't locate the pic -- I THOUGHT that previously when I added a pic that I could choose from pics that were previously saved. (not pics that were emailed [attached] or in albums -- but ones that had been inserted.)

Am I hallucinating?? Tell me it isn't so.

Right. You have to click in the box. You can't just look at it!

Linda,
Don't know if this will help, but did you click on the arrow on the right edge of the empty "Existing Transfers" box?? The list of groups with transfer requests will show in a drop-down list.? I was unclear on that at first.? I can then click on the group name, and it takes me to the transfer setup page for that group.? It's at the top of that setup page that the message tells me if my invite has been received and/or accepted.?

If you have none in process, it can only be because you didn't start one properly.

See?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/19673?for detailed instructions. Sounds like you need to resume at #7 on that list.

I¡¯ve paid for my year of premium maintenance. I¡¯ve invited [email protected] to my Yahoo group (several days ago).

Inviting the transfer agent is step 3...and you haven't completed step 2 yet. The transfer agent will not accept an invitation if you don't have a transfer pending.
