I am not familiar with PG Offline. The script I mentioned basically downloads everything and gives you a folder structure like this:

groupname/
groupname/databases
groupname/email
groupname/files
groupname/photos
¡

From that point it is up to you what to do with this. In the email directory, there are separate files for each message (plus their attachments), but there is no way to import this in the ?system. You could send each message again to the new group, but then all would be dated wrong, wrong sender (you) and it would be very hard or impossible to get the threads correct. So best would be to just upload all this to the files section I think.

Me too, last few days were busy. :)

Format for file names

I am new to Groups.io, so apologies in advance for what may be a stupid question.

When I upload a file to my group, instead of displaying just the file name, the file name includes the path all the way back to my C drive where the file is stored. It makes it hard to identify files in a list of files. Is this normal? How to fix?

Thanks.

It's supposed to just add the copied information and I haven't heard of problems with that.? Each imported group will create a bunch of new posts with consecutive numbers, but the original date order will be preserved.? Most folks don't pay much attention to post numbers, but if there are links to any in the original posts, they'll no longer point to the correct post (or even the correct site!).

I tried starting Thunderbird in Safe Mode, with all Add-ons disabled, but the behavior of the Reply links is unchanged. This tells me that Add-ons are not the cause of the problem. Thanks for letting me know that upgrading to TB 68.x does not solve the problem either. I'm in no hurry to move to that version in the midst of all the other chaos of transferring nine Yahoo! Groups to Groups.io.

Like Duane, I don't understand why one would think that the link would work with trimming and like Duane, I suggest in in Thunderbird (which I also use, version 60.9.0) that you do the mark and reply trick, as I have done here.

The Reply-to-Group link looks like this for this thread:
a target=3D"_blank" href=3D"mailto:[email protected]?subject===3DRe:%20Re%3A%20%5BGMF%5D%20Problem%20replying%20in%20Thunderbird%20using=%20message%20footer%20link%20%23reply-to-group">Reply To Group</a>
That's an HTML encoded mailto link, no different really from a mailto link one might find on a contact page on some website.

Importantly, it has to work with every Mail User Agent (MUA) that displays it, not just Thunderbird. Snipped responses are not, if I recall correctly, part of the IETF standard for MUAs, so that isn't how the mailto link behaves. In fact, I'm pretty sure the Gmail web UI doesn't support that.

In short, it doesn't work because it's not supposed to work that way.

Best,

Glenn

?
Glenn,

Your comments clarify nicely the function of the HTML code for the footer Reply links. I discovered that for myself when I inspected that code and I've moved past my expectation that quoted text would be loaded into the reply message. What had originally led me to believe that Thunderbird was trying to do that was the new TB tab that opens up along with the reply message. That tab is labeled "Loading ..." and remains there doing nothing until you close it. That seems to be a bug in Thunderbird, and it is that TB behavior that Pablo and I have been investigating. My message to Pablo (quoted above) should have made that clearer to the group. My bad. The bug seems to be alive and well in the latest version of TB and does not seem to be caused by Add-ons. As a TB bug, it is probably not an issue that we need to continue discussing in GMF.

If not, I could migrate them separately into their own subgroups.
I believe it is possible, but I don't know of anyone who has done it.?

If you try it, and it doesn't work, no harm done...you can always fall back on Option 2. Please report back on what you find.

But is it then possible to merge two subgroups? I know that I can export data per subgroup, but I don't think I can put that back (including messages etc) into another subgroup.
There are no tools available that would allow you to merge the subgroups afterward; nor can you merge subgroup content into the primary group.?

I believe folks have set the main group as Announcement Group and used the subgroups for discussions.? In this mode, only Moderators can post though.? If you'd like others to be able to post, you'd need to make them moderators, or not set it this way.? Maybe set the main group to Moderate all messages to prevent discussion from accidentally getting started.

It hasn't been mentioned lately, but each group and subgroup has it's own settings, so they each need to be set as you'd like on their respective Settings page.

Migrate several Yahoo groups into one subgroup possible?

Hi,

I am going to migrate a couple of Yahoo groups. I know I can migrate them into their own subgroups. But some of them overlap, both in subject and in members, and it would make sense to merge them into a single subgroup. Is that possible?

Re: Help with transfer of an "orphaned" Yahoo group #pgoffline

I understand if you are not with the tools to do anything and more than likely most members are on no mail but maybe post to those groups that you would like for them to join you over at xyz group that you created on IO groups ? Groups that have been stagnate for along time seems Yahoo could just delete the group . I came across one a couple years ago there was no posts for over 3 years .The owner had died the moderator left so it sets .

Re: Can I transfer multiple yahoo groups to subgroups of a main group? #transfer

The one catch is that all members of a Groups.io subgroup must also be a member of the associated primary group. So as you do the transfers into subgroups, any addresses not already in the primary group will be automatically added to both the subgroup and primary group.
Reading this:

So If you start out with the subgroups, not the primary, the primary will be populated automagically.

Then could the primary be moderated for announcements pertinent to all subgroups?

Hi Sharon,

When I did my migration from Y!G last week, I put all 1,000+ email addresses in a file and uploaded the addresses.? See the bottom of the invite screen.

It took about an hour for the request to be approved.? At which point, when I clicked on?Sent Invitations, I was able to see they had all gone out (and which bounced).? My workflow was the following:

  1. Initial bulk invite to Y!G in conjunction with a?Y!G?Special Notice so people wouldn't freak out.? ;)
  2. As people signed up, I received a boatload of notifications (as configured).
  3. Two days later, I went back to the?Sent Invitations screen and culled all those that?Accepted (I wanted to keep track) and I resent the invitations.? Once again, in conjunction with a Y!G?Special Notice
The last four days I've been doing the last step once a day.? Tonight (local time) I'm going to?soft close my Y!G (flip it to moderate all messages).? I'll leave it be for a week and delete it.? During this final week, if there are any posts to Y!G, I'lll reply to them to join the new group.?

My migration was relatively easy because I had no content to preserve.? I just needed to migrate 1,000+ subscribers.? As of this writing, 650+ came over.? No time like now to clean house!? :)

Holy cow 600K? Ok yes I understand .Now the other question is it 20 per day per group? or 20 total from your email address?

Sharon -- This is completely wrong.

You can invite as many as you want, but if you invite more than 20 in one day, they will be reviewed before going out, to ensure you are not a spammer. This was implemented two years ago when someone created a group and invited 600,000 subscribers.

Kent -- Yes. In the past, it has sometimes taken much longer than "a day or two" to move forward from here...but under the circumstances I believe Mark is fully committed to processing Yahoo transfers, and is putting most of his other responsibilities on the back burner.

As long as the status box says what it should say in "Step #11" ("we have received your invitation and will accept it soon..."), you should be good to go. Consider double-checking that.

As stated, this wait is the longest step of the process. I don't think it is intrinsically the longest step, although it does involve human intervention (solving Yahoo's ). But at this point you have clearly made a commitment to the transfer process, and for reasons of his own Mark has decided is the best place for him to allow groups to stack up in the transfer queue until he can process them in order.

Hope this helps,
Bruce
