Re: Vetting new members

In Yahoo, if a new member wanted to join the group they had to include a little about themselves, so we knew they weren't spammers. How is this done in Groups.io?Sam -- There is no "new user questionnaire" function in groups.io. But if you are using the Restricted Membership method of Spam Control, many owners use the Pending Subscription notice to poll prospective members for desired information prior to approving them. As usual, there is more information on this in the GMF wiki. See?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Screening-New-Members-Using-the-Pending-Subscription-Notice Regards, Bruce |

Pull down the Existing Transfers menu at bottom right and select the group that you're trying to transfer. A status bar should appear at the top of the resulting page. If it says something along the lines of "we have received your invitation and will accept it soon...", then everything is fine. If not, the invitation did not go out. Return to Yahoo and try again. When the transfer agent accepts the invitation, groups.io will send you an email with further instructions. Hope this helps, Bruce |

The route is as follows: Log in to groups.io, then click on the "personal identifier" at the top right hand corner of the screen. Select Account, and at the top of the resulting page they will find their registered email address aliong with a button to edit it. However, that email address is a Groups.io - wide Account setting, and will be applicable to all their groups listed under their log in; for a single log in only one email address is possible, although their Display Name can be different for different subsciptions (memberships) For "chapter and verse" see the GMF wiki here, particularly these two sections: Logging In and Setting a Password and Profile and Email Address. Is this even possible.Yes. The process is fairly straightforward, but some folks seem to struggle with it anyway. As you noted, they will first have to log in. It is possible to login without a password, using the "email me a link" method. However, I do recommend that all subscribers establish a login password eventually. More detailed login instructions can be found here:??/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Logging-In Once logged in, go to your Account page. This can be done by pulling down the menu at top right and selecting Account, or simply browsing to?/account The top box of your Account page should display the email address currently associated with your login. Type in your new email address, overwriting what is already there. Click the "Change Email" button, and look for the?email that will be sent to the new email address. Click on the link in that email and you will be all set. Please note that those having Premium groups are capable of changing the email address of subscribers for them. If you want instructions for that, let us know. Hope this helps, Bruce |

Yahoo not allowing [email protected] to be added to membership

I was excited to see that groups.io can move my Yahoo group over, but going through the steps, when I tried to invite [email protected] to my group, Yahoo says "Sorry, an error occurred while loading the content."? Does anyone else get this issue?

Changing from Yahoo email address
We just successfully converted over from Yahoo!Groups. The process was fairly quick. I was prepared for a week or more wait and it happened within one day.
Here is my question and I apologize if it has already been covered. A number of our members had a Yahoo ID and a Yahoo email so that they could log onto and participate in the Yahoo!Groups site. Now that they are transferred to groups.io, their email in their profile is the Yahoo email. Is there an issue if they log into groups.io and change their email to one they regularly use? Is this even possible. Thanks for any advice. Bob |
Second Transfer from Same Group (was: Has Anybody actually heard back from Groups.io?)

Re: Has Anybody actually heard back from Groups.io?
#3 has anybody done the pay route and gotten the process started--seen stuff moving over yet?
Yes, our group goes back fifteen years and had 1500 messages, they all transferred over, just took a few hours for them to show up. ?
#4 Does anybody know if we can start conversing on the new group if we intend to have our emails imported?
Would that mess up the transfer. Do we just sit and wait?
We started some test conversations before the transfer, no problems with that. I'm not sure if any were added during the transfer itself. ?
#5 will we have search ability for our archived Yahoo messages?
Yes, there is a search tab at the top of the messages page. I just tested it, picked a word that just appears in four of our 1500 messages and got the results instantly. ?
Unfortunately, our photos haven't come through yet, but I blame Yahoo for that. When we first did the transfer we couldn't see them at all, so I didn't expect them to come. But then they appeared again last night, we did a second transfer. We see placeholders for all the pictures and albums, but not populated. The photos appear again this morning in Yahoo, since I no longer have any pending transfers I'm going to try again.
?
On the transfer instruction page on groups.io it does give this message:
"Also note that it appears that most Photos sections are currently having an outage and it isn't known if they'll be restored prior to the deadline." |

Re: Timeout issue
Pablo Sanchez
Hi,
I would not count on groups.io changing the timeout to two minutes.? Technically, it can be done but for each long-running transaction, it keeps resources locked for that period of time, proportionally reducing the number of available resources for well-behaved email servers. I would also put forward that while you say?a general fix, implying that something is broken on the Groups side,?that in fact nothing is broken.? There is nothing to fix on the Groups side.? ?Not to sound churlish but that problem is with these other email servers.?? Cheers! -pablo |

Rumor has it that one or two people who were able to get their message base into Unix mbox format were able to get their messages into a message archive with help from support. That was a few years ago, and I believe Mark has since been reluctant to do this, lest it become a vector for someone looking to steal someone else's group.? Such abuse may seem unlikely, but it only has to happen once. I suggest you continue to try to contact the existing group owner and/or Yahoo support and get someone on that end to give your subscription the necessary privileges. In doing so, please consider the possibility that the original Owner does not want the group to continue in his absence . Failing that, the fallback is to print whatever message archive you are able to salvage into one long PDF file and upload that to the files area. Hope this helps, Bruce |
Transfer/Import of Messages from Yahoo without a Yahoo Moderator
I have a Yahoo group to migrate with no Moderator or List owner - he's been uncontactable for a long time and is believed to be ill. I've managed, with another tool, to download the whole message base to a Sqllite database, but having only member access there are nearly no email or other details of the list members. Are there known to be any ways of getting the message base into groups.io? It seems clear that the standard transfer cannot work.
