Migration questions

Edited

I¡¯m the owner of a Yahoo group.

?

I¡¯m planning a migration. I have just paid my annual premium groups.io fee and set up a forum.

?

I worry about GDPR compliance if I automatically migrate users. So I¡¯m planning to notify them myself about the move. (I¡¯ve grabbed the email addresses of all members from the Yahoo group.)

?

If I uncheck the ¡°Transfer Members¡± checkbox when migrating, can someone confirm that my Yahoo members¡¯ email and other profile info do not come across and that my Yahoo members will not be notified in any way?

?

What happens to posts in the above scenario? Are email addresses removed from the postmark/banners of Yahoo messages?

?

I suspect the infrastructure at Yahoo is failing. During the past weeks, files and attachments have been inaccessible.? Does anyone have any additional insight into this?? Can I migrate everything possible today, and then retry file migration in a week or two, in the unlikely (IMO) that Yahoo fixes their problem?

?

I may be merging a second Yahoo group into this one. I¡¯ve read somewhere here I¡¯ll be able to do that.

Any suggestions or help on any of the above?

?

TIA,

?

Tom

Donald:

The Chrome applications that Mark Fletcher wrote for downloading Yahoo! Groups members and messages still work in the current version of Chrome. I used both of them successfully today. Here are the steps I used up to the point that I opened the Yahoo members download app in Chrome. From that point on the built-in directions are clear. You can use the same basic steps for the Yahoo messages download app.

? 1. Open Chrome and go to the page.

? 2. Follow the instructions to "download the Zip file YahooMembersApplication.zip, then create a directory for it, then copy the Zip file contents to the directory." Skip the rest of those instructions.

? 3. In Chrome, in the far upper-right corner, click on the three vertical dots.

? 4. Hover the cursor over More Tools and select Extensions.

? 5. Be sure the Developer mode in the upper right corner is toggled ON.

? 6. In the upper left, click on Load unpacked.

? 7. Navigate to the directory/folder where you copied the contents of the unZipped file and click on Select. Yahoo Group Members Import0.4 should be displayed under Chrome Apps.

? 8. Open a new tab and click on Apps (far left on the Bookmarks Bar).

? 9. Click on the Yahoo Group Member ... app and the Yahoo Group Members Import page should open.

10. Follow the instructions on that page. Be sure you are signed in to Yahoo!.

I hope this works for you,

Robert

Re: Goodbye Yahoo Groups

Yes, I'm thinking limit, but in light of the members clamoring for alternatives to YG, I need to get these other 50-60 groups added ASAP. Maybe an admiin can put a 24-hour grace on my account for adding them. Or maybe they can suspend that while they get the influx of Yahoo users.

I think I've only added 10 or so today.

It's bad enough I have to do this manually now, but even that stopped working.

Re: Goodbye Yahoo Groups

How do you transfer files & photos from YahooGroups to the IOGroup? I understand my 10,000+ members have to join on their own but surely there is a way to transfer data? Or maybe not.

Susan

for years i've been hearing about them possible closing and now...they are...sigh

[mod note: again, not exactly closing.]

Re: Goodbye Yahoo Groups

Joe,

1. How do I create a new topic on this list?
image.png

2. I've been creating new groups, but I'm stuck on one where I click CRATE GROUP and it takes me to my groups without creating it.

HELP!!! I have about 50 more groups to add tonight!

There may be an anti-spammer limit to the rate at which you're allowed to create new groups.

Create group not working #owner

I've been adding new groups (as I'm sure many others are too) and now when I click on CREATE GROUP it takes me to my group home page and gdoes not add the group. I have about 50 more to create tonight and I'm stuck. HELP!!!!

The group name I'm adding follows the rules - it's all one long alphanumberic name (letters and numbers)

Re: Goodbye Yahoo Groups

I've been correcting people on that all day long.

Two questions:

1. How do I create a new topic on this list?

2. I've been creating new groups, but I'm stuck on one where I click CRATE GROUP and it takes me to my groups without creating it.

HELP!!! I have about 50 more groups to add tonight!

Any photos attached to a message that are at least 100 pixels in the shortest dimension will automatically appear in the Emailed Photos folder (unless you disable photo albums altogether).

Embedded photos may or may not, depending on how they are embedded.

The last I had an exchange w Mark over a photo issue on a wiki page, ¡°remote images¡± still remain ¡°remote.¡± ??With the obvious drawback (and benefit) to that.

Re: Require info from prospective members

Donald,

I've had requests from NextDoor a few times but something doesn't
sound right about it. I got the feeling that privacy is lacking and
that my data would be sold to 3rd parties. That may not be true but it
came across that way to me.

I have a bit more trust in Nextdoor than you, mostly because it is where went when he left Yahoo Groups (Gordon was one of the good guys). They promise "We never share your personal info with advertisers", I've been using it since 2014 without having or hearing about any problems.
They are ad supported though, so you can expect to see targeted ads on their site.?

Re: Have these issues been resolved? #photos #website #files #images

Thanks, Bruce. These may be less of an issue with the Yahoo migration than with the Wikispaces. People with an interest in the subject of my Yahoo Groups are more motivated to join. Wikispaces was page structured; Y!G is message oriented as is G.io. And I may not be able to get Y!G Photos - all I see are placeholders.

Paul -- You can poll for that using the Pending Subscription member notice. Responses are collected in the "+owner messages" section of their member record.

If they don't provide what you ask for, just leave them in Pending, and their subscription request will be deleted in two weeks.

See?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Screening-New-Members-Using-the-Pending-Subscription-Notice

Allowing them to instantly see all the emails is not great and possibly a disqualifier.?
If your message archive is set to Private and you check the Restricted method of Spam Control, they will not be able to do that.

Bruce

You can set up groups.io so that the public can't see messages there
and you can allow members to hide their addresses, I believe. You make
it a restricted group so that people need permission to join as part
of that process.

There are a few other third-party solutions to that, including PG Offline, a chrome browser app, and ModTools.

PG Offline isn't able to sign in for me right now. I do have Yahoo set
to allow less secure applications to access Yahoo and don't have
2-step verification on. It might just be that Yahoo is overwhelmed
right now with people trying to grab their content. I can sign in with
the same credentials on their main site. I was hoping for a
work-around for now until things calm down.
