Re: Messages to +owner being wrongly routed to the whole group

I've just migrated a group to io, and we've immediately had this problem, in that two of my fellow moderators are with BTinternet.? This has resulted in a message from each, attempting to approve a new subscription to the group, wrongly appearing on the group.? This actually highlights an important issue, which people in touch with BTinternet might wish to raise, which is that, in causing emails to go to others than those to whom they are addressed, they have caused statutory data protection breaches under UK (and EU?) law.

I'm so pleased I left BTinternet myself last year!

Thanks for the advice to: "tell the members to use btinternet's webmail interface if they wish to issue email commands, since it seems that messages sent that way are not affected by this bug."

Re: Saving drafts

Today I lost two messages because i could not find the way to retrieve them.
I did see some drafts listed but still could not get to them.
They did not appear to relate to the ones I lost, and seemed to be empty.
Discouraged.

Reply-to set to a different sub-group? #howto

Hi--

The usual disclaimer--I've looked in the wiki and searched the conversations, but either this detail isn't here or I've missed it.

Is it possible to set a reply-to so responses to one sub-group automatically go to a different subgroup?

(The first sub-group is for announcements; the second is for discussion of those announcements.)

Thanks!

Re: Individual E Mails

David,

That was corrected about an hour later but the person is not receiving any EMail three hours later.

Another thing to check, on the person's Membership page, is Message Selection, in the Advanced Preferences section (expander). If the member has selected Following Only then he/she would be sent only group messages in topics or hashtags he/she is following.

Re: Individual E Mails

David,

We had a new person join our group today but the setting was inccorrect.? It used the option of No EMail.

When a new member joins your group that person's initial Email Delivery setting would come from the Default Sub Settings tab in your group's Settings page. Check there to be sure new members are set up the way you want them.

Otherwise the most likely cause is that the member selected it him/herself, either when filling out the Subscription form (if he/she joined via the web) or by email command.

That was corrected about an hour later but the person is not receiving any EMail three hours later.

As Bruce said, you may want to check the member's Email Delivery History to see what that says. That might indicate that Verizon has rejected (bounced) some group messages.

If there are no Recent Bounces but the Most Recent Successful Delivery is not (yet) showing the most recent message in your group that might indicate that Verizon is delaying delivery () messages from Groups.io.

Is there a 24 hour waiting period becuase it was set up incorrectly?

No.

I know I can delete the E Mail and have him rejoin ...

I think that is unlikely to help.

Based on your subject line I assume you have him on individual emails?

Has anything been posted to the group in that interval? If not, it stands to reason that he wouldn't have received anything.

If the correction involved subscribing him to one of the digest modes, a digest will not be sent until such time that enough messages are collected. A digest is sent after 12 messages arrive or at the end of the day, whichever comes first.?

It's been my experience that changes to a subscriber's email setting take place immediately. If you're concerned that verizon may be blocking delivery, open his member record again and click the Email Delivery History button at the top of the resulting page.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Sugar -- To keep people from joining without authorization, you?must?use the Restricted Membership method of Spam Control. Look for that block in your group settings and tick the first box.

As for not receiving a notification, open your record in the group Member List and examine the Notifications block. If the checkbox labeled "Email when a member joins/leaves this group" in unchecked, that's your problem. Failing that, click the Email Delivery History button to see if the notification has bounced, or look in the spam/junk folder of your email client to see if it landed there.

Adding to David's post here: In case it matters, the email domain of the new subscriber is verizon.net

Thanks.

Re: Messages to +owner being wrongly routed to the whole group

Peter, I hope your "complaint" gets a cogent response from btinternet.

The use of the "+" is called "plus addressing" and is an important and useful feature of IMAP (Internet message access protocol).? When an IMAP mail server receives a message addressed to user+label@domain the message is automatically placed in a sub-folder named label rather than going directly into the user's inbox.? Even Gmail observes this feature.

Groups.io's use of plus addressing seems analogous to me and makes perfect sense.? I'd hate to see it changed to accommodate a non-compliant ISP.

Re: Locked topic not locked #lock

Shal, Bruce, Duane,

Thanks to all three of you. In this particular case then, the topic lock worked as intended: it allowed the topic to cool off. And now I understand how it was able to be brought back to life.

Now to decide whether or not to lock it again... (And yes, I know as owner I could always delete the topic(s) altogether.)

Re: Profile

Ellen,

What should my profile state along with moderator etc.

Is there anything addtional I need to select.

There is no requirement that you state anything in your group Profile, nor even that you make it available to group members.

You might want to use your group Profile to tell them some things (such as the fact that you own or moderate the group), but that's purely voluntary. Choosing what to say there should be guided by the nature of your group and its members -- what do you think they need to know about you, and what would you like them to know about you.

Re: Locked topic not locked #lock

Dave,

And not being familiar with hashtags, did I just goof up by putting the 'lock' hashtag on my original question, thereby locking THIS topic?

No.

It would only do that if a GMF moderator had checkmarked that option for #lock. We haven't, and if we did we would probably also make the hashtag Use by Mods Only rather than allowing members to inadvertently lock their own topic.

In other words, the name of the hashtag doesn't define its function. Only mods (who can edit the hashtag's options) define their extra functions.

Shal:

I don't think we CAN say which of btinternet and synchronoss is responsible, since we do not know whether the buggy host reports the "for .." address before or after it corrupts this address.

However, I have reported the problem to btinternet itself. I have even been given a "complaint reference number", which is a little annoying since I made no complaint!

Re: Locked topic not locked #lock

On Mon, Sep 23, 2019 at 12:53 PM, David Grimm wrote:
How did this happen? Just had someone post a reply to a message in a topic I locked a month ago.?
David -- The answer to your question is actually quite involved, but the bottom line is that "subject lines" and "topics" are not the same thing. In groups.io, a "subject line" is a string of characters, while a "topic" is just a number. Topics can be locked, but subject lines cannot. How a message gets assigned to a topic depends on when it is posted, and whether it comes in via email or online, in addition to whether it shares the same subject line.

For example, let's say that someone in your group started a topic with the subject line of "Hello." For whatever reason, at some point you lock that topic. Is it your intent that every message with "Hello" in the subject line will forever after be rejected, until the end of time? Such an algorithm for message threading would soon create its own problems.

If an incoming email contains threading information ("reply-to" info in the header), this can still be used to head things off. If not, the groups.io threading algorithm looks for a post with a "matching" subject line over the past 2 days (30 days if the subject line begins with "Re:" or other known reply indicator). If it finds none, an email with no reply-to information starts its own topic. The assumption here is that although the new message may have the same subject line as a previous topic -- locked or not -- this was probably just a coincidence.

Online, things are different, although not necessarily more straightforward. If you're reading a message in a locked topic online, there is no Reply button. But it is possible to "reply" to a locked topic online using the New Topic button, followed by entering the same subject line as the existing message. In that case, groups.io assumes the subscriber is actually starting a new topic because, well, he clicked on a button that said so.?

No, not unless the hashtag is set to Locked as part of the setup (which it's not here.)
