Re: Out of Order Emails #bug

I have a fairly simple setup. I have a domain which is registered with GoDaddy. I am using an email forward to go from that email address straight?to Gmail. I don't think any of those have throttles or greylists that I'm aware of.

Not really a bug. Among others, , spectrum and roadrunner are known to delay/throttle mail delivery. If you can get a copy of the header of the delayed message, paste it into the analyzer at?.?This will tell you who's holding things up.?

Su --?Below are the steps necessary to perform an account merge.

1) Log into the account that you want to inactivate.
2) Pull down the menu at top right and select Account (or browse to?/account)
3) In the "Email" field at the top of the page, enter the address you want to merge into.
4) Click the "Change Email" button.
5) Groups.io will notify you of the fact that the account already exists, and ask if you want to merge them.?
6) Click the blue button below this notification to confirm your intent to merge.
7) An email will be sent to the destination email address.?
8) Clicking on the link in that email will complete the merge.

If she can't log into the old account, she won't be able to complete Step 1, and the merge is not possible.

Re: Messages to +owner being wrongly routed to the whole group

Hi Peter,

Sue: It would be interesting to know if you are on btinternet.com too.
I am indeed using btinternet.com and decided to comment in case my particular experience of the problem, or weight of numbers would assist in the analysis.

Sue

Thank you for all the replies!

Frances -- thanks. Yes I did read that Wiki before posting.

Shal -- thank you. I will send her that info and go from there.

Bruce -- thanks. Would it be possible to merge the accounts rather than simply delete the old? I guess not if she lost the password?

You can change how many items are shown per page.? Click on your name at the upper right corner of a page, then select Account from the drop down.? On the Account page, select Preferences from the left menu.? Scroll down to the Items Per Page setting to see what it is and/or change it.? You'll probably find that yours is set to 20, but you can also choose 50, 100, or Infinite Scroll.? Be aware that Infinite Scroll doesn't work on all pages, resulting in seeing only 20 items.? (I know this happens in databases, so I tend to leave mine set for 50 items.)? Be sure to go to the bottom of the page and click Update Preferences if you make a change.

It's not quite like simple. The bug occurs "out there" in the internet, not at the btinternet.com domain. I can send a vulnerable message to another btinternet.com address and it isn't hit by this bug. It might be localised at synchronos.com, which is a btinternet.com subcontractor, but my fear is that almost anywhere in the internet there might be intermediate hosts with this bug - all from the same internet software source.

Sue: It would be interesting to know if you are on btinternet.com too.

I have posted this problem on a btinternet user forum, but if the problem turns out to be widespread, there may be no easy fix unless we can persuade groups.io to work-around it, perhaps by coding the "owner" address variant as something like <[email protected]>

Peter

Re: Out of Order Emails #bug

Nick,

Emails are being delayed, sometimes by several hours. Often times they are delivered to some people quickly, and others slowly. Often I will get a reply to a thread before the original email ever hits my inbox.

This is most likely caused by some members' email service using as an anti-spam technique.

Another thing we've seen is some services throttling delivery from Groups.io, but as far as I know those have resulted in bounced messages rather than delayed ones.

This is happening to the @TosaSpokesmen group - I don't know if its unique to our group or if it happens to everyone.

I suspect it is unique to members using specific email services, and not to the group(s) they are in.

Re: Messages to +owner being wrongly routed to the whole group

Chris,

What Peter didn't say is that this problem seems only to afflict () account holders with email addresses, ...
?
So until some better solution is in place, it seems that an immediate triage would be for owners of an unmoderated group to put all subscribers on moderation. This way their errant messages to +owner and etc. will be caught in the Pending list rather than sent out to all the users.

That's not too hard to do. In the Members list use the Search box to find all btinternet subscriptions, checkmark them all (with the box next to Display Name), then select Change Moderation in the Actions menu. In the pop-up Set Moderation Status dialog select Override: moderated then click the Change button. Repeat if there is more than one page of search result.

That could, of course, includes attempts to join by email but as far as I can see there aren't any in that category in the Activity Log for the group I moderate.

No, there wouldn't be.

Those would have been logged as "Non-member ... attempted to send message ... via email" instead. And ironically the would-be member would have received back the bounce message that their message was rejected because they are not a member.

Peter & I have been swapping emails about this for a couple of weeks; both of us have btinternet.com addesses.

Displaying all members

Michael J. Oghia

Hi everyone,

Up until what I think was this week, I could see all the subscribers of my list on one page. Now it's made it so that only 20 addresses appear on each page. Is this a bug? If not, is it possible to present all subscribers on the same page again? Is there a setting for that? Let me know if you need my to clarify.?

Best,
-Michael

It looks like the bug is that an internet on-route server is interpreting the + sign as the end of the "user" part of the email address.
If that's the case, then that service isn't following RFC 2821, which says:
"Consequently, and due to a long history of problems when intermediate hosts have attempted to optimize transport by modifying them, the local-part MUST be interpreted and assigned semantics only by the host specified in the domain part of the address."

No one from Groups.io management is on this group.? If you'd like to make a suggestion, you can do that on the group.? I'm not sure how much traction it would get since it's not really a groups.io problem.

Messages to +owner being wrongly routed to the whole group

Peter Martinez

I am moderator of a group. I have seen messages sent by members to the "groupname+owner" address which end up going to the "groupname" address and are thus sent to all members. This looks like a bug in parts of the internet itself. Most of the time its OK but for some members (including me) it happens every time. It looks like the bug is that an internet on-route server is interpreting the + sign as the end of the "user" part of the email address.

Have any other groups seen this effect? I think it may be very difficult to track down where this bug is occurring, and I would like groups.io to consider the possibility of a work-around at groups.io which will not be vulnerable to this bug. Perhaps changing "groupname+owner" to "owner.groupname" or something similar which doesn't use a character (like +) which could be treated as the end of the token.

Peter Martinez

Unfortunately for those that use them, FB integrations aren't working due to a change they've made:

It was working great until about August 30, then seems to have stopped. I deleted the old Facebook Page Integration, but can't add new one. Seems to not take url, That name does not appear to be the name of a Facebook Page,

Assuming you exhaust your efforts to get her current mail provider to accept groups.io messages....

If you have a Premium group, you can change her email address for her. Just open her record in the Member List and make the change. If you don't have a Premium group, you can gain Premium features for a month by paying $10.

Failing that:

1) Open her old user record.
2) Delete it.
3) Have her resubscribe to the group using another email address (i.e.: send a blank email to [email protected].
4) Have her create a new login password...and write it down this time.

This will mostly achieve the same objective as "changing her email address"...at least for your group. The only downside is that she will lose "ownership" of previous posts and uploads.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Re: bouncing, forgot password #bouncedemails

Su,

1. Is it possible to forward her a bounced email as she requests?

You can't get the whole bounced email, but following Frances' advice you can get what they probably need: the Reason given by the member's email service when it rejected ("bounced") a recent message.

2. What is the best way to resolve the problem of her not receiving emails?

If the problem is recurring bouncing, she needs to get her email service's cooperation to resolve whatever problem is causing them to reject group messages. Sometimes it is a matter of getting them recognize that Groups.io is a legit email list service and remove the rate limiting or other blocks they put in the path of "unknown" email sources.

Either that, or get another email service.
