Resurrecting a group

 

When a group has been deleted but the settings saved to a .zip file using that option in the system, can it be restored? Thanks.

I can answer this one:
  • The CSV file must be built with utf-8 as the option because json only accepts utf-8.
    In some cases you will get an early termination of the row followed by nonsense rows if you have non-utf-8 characters in your CSV file.
    In other cases you might see a little black diamond inserted to indicate each illegal character.

Note: Groups.io operates somewhat like the old, dark-ages HP 2000 Time Share system, with users allotted a specific amount of connection time.
If your table gets very large you "connection slot" may time out while uploading it and you will see a (pink banner) message indicating that you are "No longer logged in"!? ?And you actually have been logged out.? You must wait some undefined period of time and then use the usual login procedure.
If the system is still processing your table, you will not be able to log back in.
Mark suggested that I break up my table into smaller pieces to reduce the occurrence of this issue.
My current table is about 800 KBytes in JSON format and will continue to grow
Since the ID structure doesn't allow for inserts I have to reload the table to add another row and this requires extra steps to set up a basic 0 row JSON file.? I've built that "starter file" and updating requires me to delete the entire database, upload the JSON Starter file and then upload the actual CSV file.
To make Mark happy I will have to rebuild my background AccessDatabase that is used for actual maintenance of my database and generation of the CSV file in utf-8 format so that it outputs 2 or more segments.

I've been unable to reproduce this exactly.? The number of columns I create are what shows up.? On a Link type column, it asks for the Title and Description for the entry, so there only needs to be one column.? The Title is what will show and it will be linked to the URL.? Adding the Title and Description columns is redundant.

The first column is the record number.? There's currently no way to "compact" the database, so these gaps occur.? I'm not sure if there's a plan to add the compact feature or not.? If it gets too confusing, you can elect to hide that column while working on the database, but it won't remember that you hid it the next time you open it.

I would suspect that the entry in the CSV file is not in the format expected.? It could also be that there's some punctuation missing (maybe a ") or added (maybe a ,) in the wrong place.

I don't do much importing, but haven't had any problems when I do.

Hi, everyone, I don?t know if these questions have been answered somewhere else
one of my moderators handles the databases in 2 groups I am the owner of. Since transfer from yahoo she has been managing this, and she has some questions which were translated by DeepL from German into English. I could not find answers to them anywhere else, and I am not able to answer them either. I hope they are understandable:

1. create a database:
When the link collection is transferred from Yahoo to IO, the databases are structured in such a way that when links are added, the fields "Url", "Title" and "Description" are available for filling in. All fields appear only once for each row when viewing the table.
If you build a new table with the columns "Url", "Title" and "Description", when you enter new rows or import tables in CSV format, it will suddenly have five columns, with the column "Url" appearing once and the columns "Title" and "Description" appearing twice.

Akshaya -- I believe what you're wanting is for some topics would be sent as individual messages and others as a digest. What behavior are you looking for if someone has already selected a digest as their delivery mode? What about Frances' situation where they may have selected only the first message in a topic, certain hashtags, or some other Advanced Preference?

Perhaps all those interactions could eventually be worked out, but it strikes me as a peculiar way to achieve your objective. Is there some reason why placing the topic on moderation won't work??

The existing Full Featured Digest delivery option already bundles messages by topic, so you might want to consider setting up this option as the default delivery mode for the group. Go to Admin>Settings and click the "Default Sub Settings" button at the top of the resulting page. Note, however, that whatever you select and save is just the starting default for any new subscription; the change doesn't affect existing subscribers, and the individual can change it at any time.?

If you want all existing subscribers to use the digest mode and thereby slow the flux of messages you'll have to edit all their member records. Go to Admin>Members, select the checkbox next to Display Name to select everyone on the page, followed by selecting "Change Email Delivery" from the Actions menu at the bottom of the page. I suggest you tell everyone what you're going to do -- and why -- before going down that road.

Thanks Shal and Frances for your replies.

I found that it was very difficult to explain people setting up the Advanced Preferences and control over which messages are sent to them (Message Selection)

I would really like to see an option like Delivery Options in the drop-menu in the Topics list or the Edit Topic item in the More menu.

In that way, I can easily set-up the Full Featured Digest for the particular topic and reduce the flooding of messages to some extent

Or may I know why you would consider that it is not a good idea to control the delivery options for individual topics?

Sorry to ask about this again, but I have one member of a group who is not getting her own posts.? She claims to have checked the 'I always want copies of my own emails' setting.? She is not using Gmail (she is using BigPond, an Australian provider).

?

She claims the missing mail is not in her own local junk folder.?? There is a possibility it could be caught in her ISP (Bigpond) junk filter, but have not been able to check this.? Other than this latter possibility, can anyone suggest some other reason?? I am tearing my hair out (except I don¡¯t have hair).

In the Spam Control section of your group's Settings page check the Restricted Membership box. Then don't forget to scroll to the bottom of the page and click the blue Update Group button.
You, or at least one of the group's Moderators or Owners, should also check the Notifications section of their Subscription page and check the Email when there are members needing approval box if you want an email notification when someone applies for membership. Scroll to the bottom and click the blue Save button.

I know you can't rely on it but it is a big help to have it.? When they fill out my?Pending Member Application?and the state is way across the country that they give, I know something is not right unless they are traveling.
?
I know many members also join using their phone and they could be in Starbucks using Starbucks wifi for example, so the IP wouldn't be their own. But the info is helpful in a lot of instances.
?
I only wish it would show up on the Membership list too.

I don't think this question was ever asked or if it was I can't find it.

I know that when a member applies to a restricted group and clicks the blue?Apply for Membership in this group button, an email comes back showing that there is a pending member. That email we get shows the biggest town they are near, the state or country they are from?along with an IP address.
?
What I just noticed was a member used the subscribe link at the bottom of the Home Page.
The pending member notice that was received did not contain the information that is shown when the member uses the subscribe button.
?
The following was written in the notice so that is how I know it didn't come from pressing the blue button
The subscription application came in via the +subscribe email address.

Not sure if it will work for you, but...

If you plan to set everyone to New User Moderated (NuM), you could just select the entire page using the check box at the upper left, then scroll down and set them all to NuM.? If anyone already has that setting, it doesn't change anything, including how many messages they have left on moderation.

Thank you, Shal, that is very helpful. The process would be a bit quicker if I could sort or filter on current moderation settings, but with the items per page set to 100 I can go through and update fairly quickly.

You'd both need to be involved.? On your group, go to the member list, click on the line for that member (except on the check box), scroll down to the bottom, and click the Send Confirmation Email button.? The member would then need to click on the link in the email they receive to confirm their email address.? If they don't see it soon after it's sent, they may need to check their spam folder (and mark the message as Not Spam.)

Members are only shown in the Directory if they choose to make their profile available to the group.

I don't think having a subgroup for potential attendees will make any difference.? The crossover members could/would still have access and share the information.

There are several benefits, but also side effects, of having subgroups.? You can read about it on the Wiki page on this group.

Confirmation and directory entries

Hi,

?I am the owner of a small group of six or seven members. I have a ?problem that maybe you can help with. All but one of the members are receiving email messages from other members.
However one member does not receive any messages to the group. That member is shown n the member list but NOT in the directory. The members name is marked as NC which I assume is not confirmed. The member has not posted any messages to the group.

What should I or the member do to correct this ?
