Re: Comcast Rate Limiting

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýDavid,I have a user who is using Comcast email, and delivery was delayed about 40 hours for some reason.Yes, this is indeed hapening. Mark talked about it . Is there a way to tell Comcast not to rate limit emails from the groups.io servers? Also according to : If you're a Comcast user, well I guess you're not going to see this anytime soon, but if you do, I'd appreciate it if you could complain to them. Comcast Rate Limiting
David Walker
I have a user who is using Comcast email, and delivery was delayed about 40 hours for some reason. A message was sent on 7/26 at 3:42 PM and he didn't receive it until 7/28 at 7:31 AM. When I look at the "Email Delivery History," that email is confirmed as being successful at 7:31 AM. There is also an unsuccessful attempt with the response:
421 4.1.0 66.175.222.12 Throttled - try again later. Please see http://postmaster.comcast.net/smtp-error-codes.php#RL000003 So it seems as though Comcast is doing some kind of rate limiting based on the IP address of the originating server. Has anyone else observed this? Is there a way to tell Comcast not to rate limit emails from the groups.io servers? Thanks, David Walker |
Re: Pending Member
Doug,
When I look at admin>members the 2nd email address she used isIt does make a difference to her: the two addresses are connected to two separate Groups.io accounts - effectively two separate people as far as Groups.io is concerned. So at the moment she will receive group messages and can post by email (and access the group's web pages) as a member using the 1st (approved) address, but can do none of that using the 2nd (Pending) address. It is just all so confusing to me.The key to it is that each email address is its own subscription, using its own account. I agree though that the current scheme of having the Members, Moderators, Pending Approval, Bouncing, and Banned lists selected by a drop-menu seems more confusing than it should. I'm not sure what to suggest (to Groups.io) to make it better though. It does mirror the way the Messages, Topics, Expanded, and Polls views of the Messages page is chosen by a drop-menu. But it conflicts with the way the Activity page uses Tab buttons to select among the views of its list. So the UI is not entirely consistent. Re: how to promote a member to owner
Holly,
Glad you finally found the Role control, or found again I should say. I also found it quite confusing that this group's name on the emailSorry about that. Yes, it is a (relatively) recent change to show the group's Title in that drop-menu instead of the group's name. I didn't think this change would last as long as it has, so I didn't immediately jump out to duplicate the name in the Title. I've added our initials (GMF) to see if that looks any better. The change has been controversial in beta, and there is a test version out there which reverts it and adds titles to the Your Groups page instead. We'll see what happens. /groups?test=1 Shal GMF Founder -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |

Re: "Bouncing" emails
Mick,
On the list of members with "bouncing" emails what is the differenceThe short answer is: how long the member's email address has been bouncing (blue B). If the address isn't re-activated ("unbounced") it will eventually transition to "Bounced" (red B). The functional distinction is that while in blue B status Groups.io will send periodic "probe" notices to the address to find out if it is working. When Groups.io gives up on the probes that fact is noted by a change to red B. If you change the URL of your IO Group, but only changing some letters from upper case to lower case, will that impact on the links in messages or the have the need for members to change their address book etc .....I just did something like this with my test group (I changed two letters to upper case). Everything still seems to be working fine. Also, if you browse to any page in your existing group and manually change the case of letters in the address bar of your browser (the name part only), the URL still works. Finally, I also just attempted to create a new group that had the same name as my old group, except all the letters were in upper case. The system would not permit it. All of this lends credence to the notion that group names are NOT case-sensitive. Having said that, I'm unsure that I would have attempted this with my main group without a really?compelling reason to do so. Frankly, this loose talk about changing "URLs" and "website names" makes me a little nervous that we might not be on the same page. To be very clear (it's important to have NO ambiguity in situations like this), I'm talking about changing the string found in the Group Email Address in the General block in the group settings, as Shal indicated in his previously-posted screenshot.? Hope this helps, Bruce -- The system Help is your friend.??/static/help |

how to promote a member to owner
Holly
I must say, finding features or actions on the groups' sites is NOT intuitive or logical.
I am retiring as owner of the group I migrated from Yahoo in March last year. I have a co-owner, and she's found someone to be a new co-owner for just in case. I had no trouble promoting the first co-owner but cannot, in spite of reading this group's wiki (which says nothing about member promotion), find any way to promote the member to owner status. I also found it quite confusing that this group's name on the email addresses is GroupMMangersForum, but appears to be "Help Improve the Management of Groups" in the drop-down menu of the groups I belong to. I guess that's one of Mark's recent changes, but I must say it's pretty silly to have the names be so different, and in this case, don't even mean quite the same thing. If I sound cranky, I am, and I apologize! The health issues that are causing me to step down are enough to make anyone cranky. Holly |

Any tips would be appreciated.? Thank you. You'll find few groups here on that subject though do try Shal's instructions on searching for a group. You may know of some keywords that may bring back more search results than I got with the word debt or the word spend. I did find this one, but it's for business owners. I don't know if you're a business owner or not but I'll list it below: bdalist / BDA Email Group This is a closed 12-step group of people who have a desire to not incur unsecured debt and are business owners. Created: 10/08/18 /g/bdalist You can also start your own group but it will take some time to grow. You may have ways of advertising your group to get people on board and grow your membership. While I generally direct people away from Yahoo Groups, you can find many debt related groups. Just type debt in the find a group field. What to watch for when looking for a group you may want to join is how many members there are and when the last post was made. One of the groups in the first dozen or so in the list I got had its last post on January 4th of this year, but that figure in the search results is misleading since when I clicked on the link to it, I see on the group home page how many posts were made in any given month and there were 9 posts in July, June, May, and April, 11 in March, etc. Most haven't had a post since 2018 or earlier, some for many years. Some have only 1 member, and many less than 10 members. The one that is minimally active that has had recent posts is this one: In it's heyday it had as many as 14,000 posts in one month back in 2007. There are still over 1400 members. If you find that it's a dead group and the posts are only spam, create a group here and make an announcement in that group, and many others that you find have become spam havens (usually it means it's an abandoned group) and announce your new group in those groups. See what happens. Dying groups won't suddenly become active again by moving here, but you might attract some to your new group here from abandoned groups. That is, if you can get your membership approved. It's possible that if it's truly abandoned, you may not have a moderator or owner there who is still active (or alive) who can approve your request to join. You can also join some of these groups and mention the lack of frequent posts and ask where you could find related groups, perhaps on other platforms line online forums, Listserve or Majordomo groups (email lists), etc. You'll have to search for one, and expect to spend some time searching. I would try the search terms "online" with either "Debt" or "spend" and maybe either "list" or "group" but not all of these together. I didn't find any that led to groups or an "active" listserv email list. I found this but the link to sign up leads to nothing: Hope this might be of SOME help to you. Lock group button
While going through settings, I noticed a button that says "lock group."
I've searched through help and can't find anything of what that means.
In my mind, I'm assuming it means that the group is frozen and the
members can no longer post or do anything until I fix a problem and
unlock it. Is that what it means?
I apparently sent my original email to the wrong address, and the link for the answer I was given is no longer available....so I'm still looking for an answer.
Thanks!

Our travel group considered a name change so it could be more easily found in the list of groups. We decided on an easier solution - formed a second group for owner and moderators. The description invites members to join our main group and gives a link.
