If it were my group, I wouldn't have it listed in the Groups.io directory.? That would minimize the chances of anyone finding it, so there should be little to deal with.? You could also have a (nicely worded) rejection notice for the few, if any, that manage to get into the pending list.

BTW, no one from Groups.io management is on this group.? To make a suggestion for the site, you need to join beta, the official suggestion box group.? There have been threads there in the past about invitation only groups.? You could join in one of those, if they're not locked, or start one of your own.

My thanks to all who have responded - time to consider!

Thanks Judy - yes we can stop non members from posting, but they receive an email saying their message has been rejected and, in that email, there is information telling them what to do in order to become a member.? It is the use of these links that cause further work as the non member becomes a pending member awaiting authorisation and we have to delete them.

It would be better for the rejection email to not contain these links.

Moderator Changing Subscriber's Display Name

In the normal course of events a Subscriber sets or edits their own Display Name, and of course any such action appears in the Activity Log.

Very occasionally a Moderator may have to intervene and set / edit the Display Name on the Subscriber's behalf; the reasons for this do not need to be described here.

However, a Moderator setting or editing someone else's D/N does not appear in the activity log, or if it does I have been unable to find the search heading for it. It certainly does not appear under Changed Display Name or Moderator Changed.

The question is... should it?

Groups.io has the ability to keep non members from posting to your group.? Perhaps that would help?

Subject: [GMF] Invitation-only group #suggestion

We are looking into moving to groups.io and note that there is no option to restrict a group to be invite only.? I have found various options to strap down unwanted activity, but would like to suggest a simple addition that would help us and probably others.

When a non-group members tries to send an email to the group it is rejected (correctly) but the rejection email contains a couple of links/emails saying theses can be used to join the group.?This rejection is way too positive for invite only groups.

The unwanted group member just clicks on the link or send an email asking for membership and we then have to get rid of them (nicely)!

By having a flag (or even better, by being able to control the reject email content) it would be possible to return a message that is more appropriate and one that does not solicit a membership request.

Thank you,
Tony

Notification of file updates

When a new file is uploaded we are given the option of sending a notice to
members, but not when an existing file is updated. Can anyone see a reason why
this option should not also be available (as a separate option)? It would be
very useful on one of my groups, where updates to existing files are much more
frequent than uploading new ones. If no one here can see an objection, I'll
raise it on Beta.

It's software that you install on your device and launch to access groups.io (in lieu of using a web browser). See??for previous posts from Mark on this topic. Last word was that he had contracted with a consulting firm to work on it. If there's a timeline for completion, it's known only to Mark.

Yes, Mark (site owner) has mentioned several times that an app is in development (on the beta group.)? Some wanted functions are planned to be included and others should be easier to implement once it's done.? No mention of a release date yet.

Re: help [members see red X instead of posted images]

Judy,

Is there a way I can check the settings the individual?have made?to make sure they're correct?

You can check their Subscription settings via your group's Members page, see the second and third screenshots in Chris' message. In particular the Max Attachment Size setting.

You cannot directly check whatever settings the member may have in their email interface, they'd have to report that to you. I don't really expect to find the problem there, but it is possible that the interface is hiding the image? thumbnail for?some reason.

Judy,

?

We've created another group and we'll see if this is going to work.?
?
I doubt it will be any different, given the same posting.
?
I think Chris is on the right track with suspecting that the member's Max Attachment Size setting might be a factor. That would normally operate by removing the attached image and replacing it with a thumbnail-size version of the image, which is a link to the full-size image stored in your group's web pages.
?
Why the thumbnail wouldn't display properly is the question. That could be an issue with the image format or with the settings of the member's email interface.
?
Like Chris, I have a test group, , which you are welcome to join and use to investigate this issue.

Judy; please report back with your findings, because the suggestions I made were a "best guess" at what the problem(s) might have been so some feedback from you might well help create better answers for any future queries of this type. It might also enable a wiki section to be created or an existing one edited.

It would also be useful if you Direct Mailed me with a couple of sample graphics attached, but not ones that have been downloaded from your web UI as these will probably have been through some sort of processing during uploading. Insofar as you are able to determine an "average" one and a "big" one (in terms of file size) would be ideal. I can then take them off to a test group to which I have access so I can tinker with various upload and attachment settings.

Peter,

IMHO, you don't. You should have requested the information and then personally forwarded the answer back to the potential member.

You should not have given out their email address.

I really think you need to double-check that. Any?emails?that group members received should have contained the email address. It's only obfuscated in the online message archive. And per Duane, you can change your settings to allow them to be visible there, too...but only to subscribers who are logged in.

My question therefore is: ?how do we reply to a non-member from within the groups site?
From the web site, it is not possible to send a reply to a non-member...nor can you force an unsubscribed address into a email's reply-to field. The best you can do is provide her address. Group members who want her to be copied will have to use their own email client and populate that address manually.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

P.S. Better yet, just tell her to join. It's not a lifetime commitment.

If you have private archives, you may not want to hide email addresses.? In the group settings, scroll down a bit to the Privacy section and change the Hide Email Addresses In Archives to "Do not mask email addresses in the archives."? (Don't forget to Save Changes)? Even if you have public archives, the email addresses are supposed to be hidden from anyone not logged into the group.

A workaround. This works on my iPhone. Open the post and copy it. ?Click on share on the iPhone. ?Choose email or message and paste the post. ?It isn¡¯t enough to allow the default post which will just have the post URL. They can¡¯t open that. I just tested it and it works for me.?
