Thank you for the search engine help wiki

If, during my (not quite) lifelong career as a programmer/developer I read every User's (Loser's?)Guide, Programming Manual, Compiler guide, etc?before?I ventured to develop my first program on a strange computer system, operating system, compiler or simulator I would have never had a chance to do much productive work.
So I've always treated Tomes on knowledge as Reference Material, not Requiredm Reading Material and let my errors by the guide to my reading.
While trying to provide guidance to a member of our advocacy group whose iris is stuck in an open position I searched our 20 year message archive.? But I was defeated by the fact that one of our Mentors, (experienced, and? smart and great communicator) had the condition noted on every post and unfortunately, she didn't use the Signature feature to execute her signature.? So I have her hundreds of posts showing up on every search.
Not only that but one of the two words in the Latin name of the condition gets differently misspelled by almost every one of those suffering from it so the variations were killing me and there are actually at least two different conditions that utilize the first Latin word.

firstword AND lastword wouldn't work because of the second condition with the same first word.

firstword AND NOT secondconditionsecondword wouldn't work because of the Mentor's signature in the text body couldn't be inhibited.
firstword AND lastword AND NOT thatmentor also was no good because of the frequent misspelling of secondwords second syllable BUT........wait for it
firstword AND last* AND NOT thatmentor was a winner because it allowed all forms of the second word's most common misspelling while eliminating the mentor

And voila! I had my perfect solution

Re: suddenly many yahoo.com members are bouncing, but not all of them

jonathon,

Oath has been pounding my AOL account with an "important message" of
some kind. I don't what it says, since their messages automatically go
to the trash.
If it really was from Oath you probably wanted to read it.

Oath was pounding one of my non-Yahoo accounts that it now owns,
requiring I login into a specific page, or lose the account.
All of the header data pointed to Oath being the originator.
As you (probably) know, during its brief existence Oath was the brand within Verizon that acquired both Yahoo Mail and AOL Mail. Now that brand is known as Verizon Media.

When Yahoo/Verizon needs to contact you with regard to your account they generally send the message to the account's address and also to every recovery address that you've listed in the account. So the non-Yahoo address may have been one of those.

Aha. This explains a lot and educational for me. That was part of my
problem earlier, then, I was forgetting to reply to the subscription
notices, but have done so now, and seem to be seeing messages now.

Thanks very much!

If you mean the message that says "Subscription Approval Needed" then
yes. Until you approve them they are not a member and can neither
receive group messages nor post to the group.

Either that or click the link in the message to view the Pending Member
on the group's web site and approve the subscription there. Or, go to
the Members page of your group. If there are Pending members it should
open automatically to the Pending list.

Otherwise, probably not. In particular if you invited someone and they
accept the invitation then you won't get the "approval needed" message -
the invitation serves as pre-approval (but only if they accept it).

Note that your login is stored as a browser cookie, so when you switch browsers you may not be logged in to the same account, or logged in at all, in the other browser (or device).

So this may not be an IE flaw. Not that I have anything good to say about IE, even , as they are no longer keeping it up to date with current web standards.

A mix of POP and IMAP.

I setup the accounts using their non-US domains.

On the left Admin. In that menu,?you will see Pending, Members, Invite, Integrations, Settings, Promote, Activity and Upgrade.

If you want to change permissions for a member, including yourself, click on Members in Admin. You can change Role, notifications, etc.

You might find the GMF wiki useful. I know I do! So much so, that I occasionally write a bit when I think that something needs record ing for future reference!

Re: People subscribing but unable to post.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Hi, Chris and Shal,

?

At the time of this writing, this is the only information I had.? I just started the group last night.

?

Since the time of this writing, someone did post their welcome message when subscribed, and I think I know what happened.

?

When I was first putting the group together, the name I was going to use was jobs-chat.? Then, in process of setting up, decided to use jobs-blind-chat, which is a better reflection of what the group is.? I saved the settings, then posted my invitations.

?

The welcome message this subscriber posted still had the jobs-chat as the e-mail, not the one I had changed to.

?

I am new to groups.io, so please remind me where I can find moderator settings to check.

?

Thanks.

Given that the email must say something more than "incorrect address" it would be very helpful if you could forward a complete copy of the email rather than just two words.

Who is the originator of the returned email? Is it Groups.io or some other organisation? Is it all subscribers or just some of them?

Also have a look at your Activity Log to see what is reported there. Are (some) subscribers trying to post from email addresses that are not those affiliated to their Accounts?

Welcome message: is it automatically sent to people when they join?

Yes, if you made one Active in the Member Notifications tab of your group's Settings page.

Also, How do you phrase the instructions that you give to people to get to the wiki? I noticed that it is available from some point but not others.

Assuming you mean your own group's Wiki, members should see it in the list of pages in the left column while visiting your group. If they don't they may not be logged in. Or you may not have set the Wiki's Permissions to allow members to view it, in the Features section of your group's Settings page.

If you mean GMF's wiki pretty much the same answer, but they would need to be visiting GMF's pages. Note that GMF's wiki is public, meaning that one needn't be logged in to see it. That's not the normal setting for most groups.

If somebody joins with an ?email address that has their name, it will show, correctly? So if they if their email address has their name on it they need to join with a different address, correct?

Eh?

Groups.io's web pages will normally show the member's Display Name, not their email address. They can edit their display name via the Identity page of their Account (to change all of their group subscriptions, or any one or more of them); or they can change it through the Group Profile tab on their Subscription page in your group.

The initial value for their Display Name may be taken from the display name portion of their first email to Groups.io, if they haven't set one explicitly through the web interface.

If that doesn't address your question then... what's your question?

I asked this before but I may have missed the message. How do I unmoderate myself?

You started a topic called How do we unmoderate ourselves on 18th March and Shal's was the 2nd response on 20th March.

How did you manage to miss the answer? Shal responded at length in this message.

I have a suspicion that you are using email access only rather than the web UI which makes missing wanted emails so much easier. Obviously I could be mistaken...

Re: People subscribing but unable to post.

Judy,

The subject says it all.? I checked my invitations and the group address is correct.? But subscribers say they get an e-mail back saying ¡°incorrect address.¡±

Do all invitees have this problem, or just a few?

I think you may need more detail from your invitees. Specifically the exact text of the error message being reported by their email service. But here are some other ways to check it out:

One possibility is that they are posting to an address that isn't even Groups.io. A version of this is that they're getting that much right but have a typo or other problem in the group name. To diagnose this, ask them to post again but CC you so that you can inspect the To address in their message.

Another possibility is that they didn't actually accept the invitation, and they're getting back a "not a member" error from Groups.io. In this case the Invitation page should show them as "sent" but not "accepted". Or they did accept the invitation, but are sending from a different address. This case you can diagnose by looking at your group's Activity logs. Attempted postings by non-members should be logged there. This is assuming you have not elected to allow non-subscribers to post.

Re: #bug Export data email has non-usable URL #bug

Henning,

The zip file URL returned in the export data email message is not usable, at least if received via gmail. I had to decode the raw plain text version via the 'quoted-printable' translator.
?
I used this feature about a week ago and didn't have a problem, but I probably opened the message in Thunderbird, not Gmail's web UI. I'll go take a look at it after work today, but any additional detail you can provide may be helpful.

Note: GMF is a user-to-user forum, no one from Groups.io monitors messages here. If you wish to post a bug report to Groups.io you must use the [email protected] address.
