Re: All messages by a member

Dano,

Aha! And that's where the Catch-22 begins!
As you've learned in beta, there is no catch-22.

For the benefit of GMF members who don't follow beta:

As a member you might wish that the Directory had a search function, but as a group owner/mod you can open their subscription page from the Members list.

At that point you have two easy options.

One is to click on their User Name and then click on "All Posts By This Member" in their profile page.

The other is to click on their "Activity History" tab; that lists their postings and other activity, the entries for each post link to the post.

Re: Two messages for the price of one?

Brian,

So what I'm seeing, as I look at it, is 1 post has my actual email
address, ie, BlahBlah@... ...
Ah yes, Gmail.

If she looks a bit closer I think she'll find that the copy of the message which has her real address is the copy she sent. That is, it did not go to Groups.io and back, and does not have the group's footer on it.

Conversely, the one which has a re-written address is the copy that came back from Groups.io. It will have the group tag in the subject and the group footer at the bottom. And may have been edited by a group moderator if she's moderated in that group.

I just looked a bit more, &, though I did not check the option to
receive my own posts, it appears to be on by default.
It is.

The effect of it is to rewrite the Message-ID field of the message sent back. This causes Gmail to think that it is a separate message from the one that was sent, with the result that it is shown in her Inbox conversation rather than hidden away in her Sent folder.

The re-writing of her From address is a separate feature, and happens regardless of any settings. Without that, Gmail warns that the message may be spoofed.

Re: Database help please

Thank you Shal,

I will continue trying to import the .csv file back to the database. ?I must be doing something wrong!

i know the database can be sorted but it doesn't 'remain sorted' which is a problem for us. ?Besides which sorting by month does not work as the sort is done in alphabetical order. ?The way I used to get around this with Yahoo was to put the month number in front of the name i.e. 1 January, 2 February etc. ?It is a big job for me to set up each year to get around all the variables and quirks in the system :)

FYI
We are a charity knitting, crocheting and sewing group supporting 3 or 4 different charities each month of the year, who give us a wish list of what is needed by them. ?I have been using a database to record the order of monthly projects for the past 14 years. ?It works for us!! ?Our members can choose to make items throughout the year and send in when that charity comes up on the calendar. ?Most of us print off the database at the beginning of the year and plan our craft projects. ?Hence me not using the Calendar -- it is used to announce when meetings are held around the country -- we are a National Australia wide Charity :)

Thanks again for you response,
Pamela

Well, the member interacts via e-mail exclusively and is a member of another groups.io group, but as a lurker.? ?Those two things being said, she was still trying to do her own diagnosis and appears to have figured out what was happening.? ?Here is what she said, with e-mail address partially redacted:

So what I'm seeing, as I look?at it, is 1 post has my actual email address, ie,?BlahBlah@...,?the other says BlahBlah=[email protected].

I just looked a bit more, &, though I did not check the option to?receive my own posts, it appears to be on by default. I've unchecked?it & it appears gmail does rewrite the from: line when it sends posts?back, so this may be what's occurring.?

I know I saw Mark talking about address rewriting recently on the beta group, and I don't know whether there may be an unintended result occurring here or not.

I have asked the user these questions.? ?I am virtually certain she's using the e-mail interface, as this is a blind technology group and it's very, very rare for members on those (besides myself - and I am sighted) to use the web interface.

I will post again when I get definitive answers.

Re: All messages by a member

Is there a simple way to pull up all the messages by a member?
Yes.

1) Find one of their messages, then select "All Posts by This Member" from the More hamburger menu.
2) If you click on their name at the top of the message, it will open their profile. The profile contains the same link.
3) You can also access their profile via the Directory, or using the "View Profile" link at the top of their record in the Members List.
Aha! And that's where the Catch-22 begins! You can't find their messages until you've already *found* one of their messages, If it's a member who hasn't posted in a while, you're stuck. I think I'll take this to beta. Why couldn't we have that same option when we select a member in the member search? Or alternately, have the option under message search to search for sender, probably including email address?

This the group mods/owners can do, except that there's no filter for

Interesting. This can certainly work though our mbox archives will get
large since we do patch review on our mailing list.

As a side note here, who do I talk to about getting our current mbox
archive uploaded to groups.io? I was planning on sending an email to
[email protected], but perhaps there is a more appropriate route.

Best of luck in your new project! I've used Jira and Confluence before
and have enjoyed using those tools. That being said, like any tool,
companies often find a way to misuse them to the detriment of the
users. Hope that's not the case for you. :)

Photos - Album Sort Order

Some of us need to be able to set the "default" album sort by Created, Most Recent. The problem is that when an album is created for members to put pictures in, it is not visible unless the entire Photos section is re-sorted by "Created" down-arrow ... not intuitive and difficult to remember for some members.
Can the default be changed, or can manager's have the ability to change the default ... please?

Re: Subgroup as "Collaborative Inbox"? #subgroups

As owner of two sizeable groups, something I've put in place to do what I believe you're trying to accomplish is this:

Set up a separate Gmail address (such as GroupName@...) and give all moderators access to that account.? We rotate moderation duties, and that gives each of these groups a separate moderator email account that for moderation work.? Usually, that email address is used by our duty moderator, but it's accessible each of our moderators and provides a good record of moderation emails so any oncoming moderator can review most all moderation email exchanges.

Not saying this will work for every group or every situation but it works very well for our two groups!

As the saying goes, your mileage may vary!

This the group mods/owners can do, except that there's no filter for time range - the export will have the group's entire message content.

On the group's Settings page there's an Export Group Data button. That will take them to a form where they can choose what content. There is a checkbox for Messages, they would select that one alone.

I'm not certain about the rest of the steps in your workflow, but what the group mod/owner will get is a zipped .mbox file with all of the group's messages. If you have a means to open that and prune it down to what you need then you're probably set.

I'd use Thunderbird for the task, but that's just because it is the tool I know, I'm not familiar with the unix tools you mention, nor am I familiar with git. I use Fossil for version control and ticket tracking.

Some projects at work are using git, but fortunately I'm not on those projects. I hear a lot of cursing from those who are, but git is only one part of the problem. Also fun is the Atlassian ecosystem, but I'm drifting off-topic here (must be late). Re: Creating an alias

Mike,

The default is to have the first message moderated. I override that
for most members.
Exceptional diligence.

I'd probably just wait for their first message to arrive in Pending, then approve it (assuming it is appropriate). Then the system will automatically switch their Privilege from NuM to "Use Group Moderation Setting". Or after some other number if you set a number other than 1 for "Unmoderate after".

Not my first choice, but I will encourage the dozen or so members who
use Winlink and cannot add a Winlink alias to add a subscription, like
I did.
Then they can use the Subscription controls for each to control which receives group messages. Or they could unsubscribe their regular address and use just their Winlink subscription instead, if they like reading and posting messages from there better.

But if you or they really would rather not have their Winlink address showing in group messages I still recommend that they log in using that address one last time to delete that account. Then they should be able to establish it as an Alias to their main address.

Re: Member's page

Marcia,

I tried this. WHERE does note appear?
Only on the Notes page itself, as far as I know.

Our groups.io group needs an additional column on the Members
roster page to be entered manually by our membership person. And, be
able to click on heading so, same month, day and year dates are
together on the list.
So, for your purposes it seems like the column would need to be entered and stored as a date, not arbitrary text.

Or I suppose the column could be text, as long as you maintain the discipline of entering them in a consistent format, such as 2019-03-16, which sorts correctly as text. If you entered them as March 16, 2019 each month would be together, but they wouldn't be in calendar order and the years would be mixed in.

There doesn't seem to be a way to do this. The headings there are
good, but we need an Expiration Date column, so we know when to
remove a member from the list.
Would you want the system to automatically remove them on their expiration date, or do you prefer to handle that manually?

I'm kind of interested in this myself. One of my duties as email-list assistant for a PTA unit is to remove PTA unit members whose prior-year memberships have expired from the email list of the unit.

Right now the unit Membership chair tracks unit memberships in an Excel spreadsheet. S/he periodically sends me updated copies of that spreadsheet. I use Excel to compare that list to an export of the email list subscriptions and add/remove list subscriptions as needed.

Members of this group have to be a member of another group.
I'm not sure if it is relevant, but are you saying that this group is a subgroup of that other group, or just that there's a rule your moderators enforce about the memberships in the two groups?

Member's page

Marcia Hudspeth

Hi Shal,

? ? Thanks for your response.

? ? I also tried to change the Joined date - so we could make it Expiration Date.? Doesn't seem to be able to be changed????

? ? My suggestion to beta is at the bottom. If more information is needed, please ask.

Marcia

Is there a way to add a column to the Member's listings page?
No. But that seems like a desirable feature.

One thing that can be done is that each member's page has a Notes tab. There you can enter whatever text you want about that member. Unfortunately no part of that shows in the list itself. In fact there's no indication elsewhere of whether a member has a note or not.? I tried this.? WHERE does note appear?

Maybe we can work up a suggestion to post in beta (the Groups.io "suggestion box") as to how this can be improved. If you have some ideas to flesh out this question as a suggestion please reply here. I'll think about some ideas and reply here later.

Re: Database help please

Pamela,

I have a problem importing and exporting records from a database. My
group works to a yearly Calendar which is set the month prior to the
start of each year.
One initial confusion is that you seem to be using the Database for this rather than the group's Event Calendar. That's ok, and you may have good reason to do so, but I wanted to clear that up, and possibly suggest that the Calendar might do what you want better than the Database, if you hadn't considered it.

As there is no way to edit the ID number for rows the only way i can
find to keep the Calendar in order for our very computer illiterate
members is to rewrite it.
The ID number is a serial number for that entry. It is assigned when the entry is created and never changed thereafter. In concept similar to a message number.

But a key feature of the Database is that it can be sorted on any column simply by clicking that column header.

So I think what you're looking for is a way to set a particular column of your table to be the default sort column when a member opens the table. There doesn't seem to be a way to do that at present; but it seems to me like a useful feature.

When creating or editing a table that could be a checkbox in the column definitions. Checking that in one column's definition would necessarily clear it in the others.

The export works fine but for some reason I do not seem to be able to
import the file back into a database. Is there a way of doing this?
That should be possible, but I haven't tried it in a while.

I know one key factor is that the first row of the imported .CSV must be the column Names, matching exactly those of the pre-defined table.
