Re: Polls

Look, my polls are really meaningless in the scheme of things.
I am the owner and really what I say goes.
I just wanted to let the members feel they had a say.
?
My groups aren't as important as many of the other groups on IO
Mine are more hobby?groups.
Entertainment.
They aren't meeting groups, business groups or important groups.
Not even important to me although some of them have been in existence for over 10 years.
?
They are G rated graphic groups and Tag groups.
?
So what if a member votes more then once. Hopefully I have that under control to not allow
Duplicate?memberships. But yes, a member can join with a completely different email and
Vote twice. So be it.?In that case when a tag offer is put out they can request 2 tags?having a
different name on each one.??
?
Well then a setting should be made to allow
1) ALL to Vote
2) Only members who aren't being moderated
?
My poll was just to see if the members wanted me to continue playing games in the group.

However the inability to allow all Subscribers/Members to vote is a restriction without merit.

BTW, I would think the most difficult thing might be to prevent any person from voting more than once (by having more than one subscribed email address), but I don’t think anyone is suggesting that should be a feature.

The group is made up of members who can't post to the group.
It is a Tagging Group
Tag?Offers are made in the group and members reply directly to the
Tagger if they want a tag that is offered to them. The members have nothing to offer to the group except for the taggers.
?
So when a poll is set up - the only way the members can vote now is if I change their posting privileges.
?
"All members regardless of their posting privileges should be able to vote in a poll."
You say why is that exactly?
When the group is made up of members who can't post, who else would be voting if they
weren't allowed to.
?
In this type of group it isn't necessary for anyone else but the taggers to post to the group.
?
The taggers aren't Moderators
?
It isn't an announcement group only.

First from writing to support - Mark said the program was set up so members who couldn't post in a group couldn't vote. That is a given.
?
Yes, the other members status is set to NP
Override, not allowed to post?
?
I don't want them posting to the group as they would have nothing to offer the group except spam as they will not be offering tag offers.

I am still confused as to exactly how you are keeping members from posting. Other than the Announcement setting under Spam Control there does not appear to be any group-wide way to do that.

Do you have all the other members (besides the 15 you mentioned) set to "Override: not allowed to post?"

Re: Why does OBO appear in posts?

I wrote a couple of days ago about this issue.? This morning I sent email to my group using a different email address (gmail) and it still came through? with 'Loopy via groups.io'?

I can understand it being the email provider in one case but in both email providers?? Other people in the group don't have these issues and yes I do see it as an issue.

Display Name, Profile Fields and Member Directory

Hi Everyone,? ?I am a newbie here who has been suffering along with a few Google Groups and was stoked when I learned about Groups.io.? ?First impression was that it looked cleaner and seemed better designed - with a fairly impressive feature list.? ? I came to this forum and did a bunch of searches to see if it could do the three most important things to me.? ?Unfortunately, I seem to have gotten only two out of three things I wanted, but it is also possible that I missed something, got something wrong, or don't know about the workarounds.

1.? Display Name.? Everyone who has moderated a Google Group knows how awful it is when someone with the display name Xger72 makes a post - names like that are just not conducive to community building.? ?I was delighted when I learned Groups.io had addressed this - and who cares if the user can change it back - they probably won't and even if a few did it is something I could live with.

2.? Profile Fields.? The next thing I wanted was control over profile fields.? ?This was perplexing - I poked around the entire site and couldn't find a way to do that - just the strange few default fields.? The app seemed so sophisticated it seemed like it must be there somewhere - even more confusing because there was a complete database section - but I couldn't figure out a way to link them up.? Reading some forum posts seemed to confirm the disappointing news that there was no profile fields tool in Groups.io

3.? Member Directory.? ?The last thing I wanted was a really good member directory, which I think is integral to the community.? Naturally I originally hoped to be able to display any of the profile fields I had added in any order but with that not possible hoped it was at least a good directory where any member could be contacted.? I was disappointed to learn that members could "opt out" of having their profile in the directory, and what is far worse the defaults were set so the profile would not be visible.? ?What's worse, the developers, in discussing this used language like "users being forced to use the directory".? No more than being forced to register for the service in the first place - I know I can't be the only one who considers the directory to be an integral part of the community.? Unless I am missing something - and I hope I am - this is a major bummer.

So that's my initial take.? Not quite "shoot from the hip" because I did try to do some research first but if I got anything wrong please let me know - and also let me know if there are any workarounds or integrations to help with these issues, or if they are being planned as features in future releases.?

Thank you

subscribing to calendar issues

I have a very full and not-public calendar that our members would like to subscribe to. We seem to be having lots of issues. I hope someone can make some suggestions that might help or point me to a help page...

My members who use android phones are not able to subscribe to the calendar from their?google calendar. Does the groups.io calendar have to be public for them to subscribe? They are able to subscribe to other calendars.

My members who use cozi?can subscribe but only some of the events show up.

For members who can subscribe from their google calendar, the group.io calendar recently just disappeared. It is still visible on ical.

The members who subscribe using ical can see all events except one.?

Please help, things were working fine and now they are not and my members are getting frustrated!

Thank you!

Re: Polls

Our group is composed of members that are owners of a specific type of sailboat, and whenever we make a poll it usually is to ask questions about something specific pertaining to that sailboat. Feedback from people via a poll that do not own this type of sailboat, would not be relevant to our members, unless they had owned one of these sailboats in the past. Of course, people do join our group to learn about these sailboats, and to see if there any of them for sale. Once they pass the Pending Subscription part of joining, they can post after one moderated post…and vote in a poll. Non-members are not allowed access into our group, but if we were a public group it wouldn’t matter who posted or voted in a poll.

That is one way to look at it.
But to?take part?in a poll what would it matter what kind of member they are??
They can't do anything but to check off an answer which you had given them choices.
They can't hurt the group in any way. Ilene

Yes, hindsight is 20/20
I didn't think there would be a problem.
?
The message archive issue was another problem. It is not associated with the Poll problem and it concerned another group of mine. That issue has since been solved with the locking of messages and instructing the group that we run an email group.
?
Most of my members are elderly, handicapped and are computer illiterate. I am not computer savoy myself.
?
It is all I can do is have them reply to messages and in some groups share some graphics and stuff. To teach them to use hashtags would be impossible.
?
My groups aren't as complicated as some of the groups here and reading the posts. All we need is a simple basic platform to send emails to a group from.

Ilene -- As you noted, posting and responding to polls currently have the same member permissions. Splitting them will not be a trivial exercise.

Trying to help, but am not clear on your settings. Do you currently have an Announcement group? This setting is not at all unusual, and like you, I would not have anticipated it having an adverse effect on polls. Hindsight is 20/20...

Some time ago we talked about trying to use hashtags to implement your requirements with respect to disabling the message archive (see /g/GroupManagersForum/topic/25505828#11723?). As I recall, this involved the following settings in Message Policies:

Hashtags Required
Hashtag Permissions -- Use existing hashtags, others bounced
Then set up just one hashtag for the entire group that only Moderators can use and deletes the topic after a short duration.

I suspect if you were to follow that recommendation from a month ago, you might be able to maintain your posting restrictions while allowing subscribers to respond to polls. Your Moderators would of course have to remember to use the hashtag every time.

Failing that, I think you might have to set up a Restricted subgroup, direct add everyone to that, and post your polls there.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

How to display time of posting

A member in my group asked this question: Can the time be displayed on the messages posted??

Before I answer, I have done a bit of research and found that on the email client I use, the time is always displayed. I don't know how other client programs handle this. However, when looking at posts using the web browser (I use Chrome; others may handle this differently), the time of the posts are only displayed for the current calendar day. Posts from previous days only show the date.?

I vaguely recall this topic being discussed before in this group, but I couldn't find it using the search function.?

Is there a way to force the time of posting to display on all messages? Am I missing a setting? Or is this something I should take to the beta list?

Dave

Re: Polls

At this time that cannot happen unless you give all the members posting privileges in the group. If you are the only one able to post to the group, then you will be the only one able to vote in the poll at this time.
?
What I?think needs to happen if you write to support letting Mark know that you'd like that option too and others write to support saying they would like that option?and it isn't?only me that asked about it, then maybe it will happen quicker. ?
?
What it think happened over this past year or so, many of the graphic art type groups moved to groups IO. From the discussions I have read in this GMF group, most of the group owner's needs are different from ours who run graphic art type groups.

Yes and no.? A poll is a message, so those that can't post shouldn't be able to respond.? I do agree (I think) that anyone should be able to vote in a poll though.? Mark may be able to tweak this if you send a report to support.

Your poll must be working well because all of the members have posting privileges in the group.

Go to the Homepage of the group.

If I am on the homepage of the group I cannot find a direct link in the left column leading me to the poll.? There are links for files, databases, and creating a new poll, but I can't find one for an existing poll.?
