Re: Resend "Confirm" message

In Admin: Members

Scroll to bottom of page
Click on ¡°Send Confirmation Email"

Is there any way to resend the "Confirm your [address] email address" message?

I'm the owner of a group that requires moderator approval of membership requests. On my "Pending Approval" membership list there is someone listed with the "NC" (Not Confirmed) tag. It has been several days now, and I suspect they may have lost the message with its individualized confirmation reply address (and its similarly individualized confirmation web link). Is there any way to resend this message?

Re: Owner not showing up on member list

Maureen,

We wanted a fresh start so I simply copied an email list of the
members we were moving over and auto-added them to our Groups.io
account to avoid the invitation process.
Do you mean Direct Add, and that you didn't actually use the Easy Group Transfer process?

So, I don't think there will be any serious consequences of removing
my second "Yahoo!" membership here, but please let me know if you
think otherwise with this additional info.
Nope.

If there is (and will be) no content (Files, Photos) copied into your Groups.io group by the transfer agent then I don't see any consequence to removing your Y!Mail membership.

... until yesterday when I made one of the other members an owner ...
That took care of the one advantage you might have gained by keeping a second address in the group.

Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

This week's change log:

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the
changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new
topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

CHANGE: Updated the list of not permitted groups on the create group
page.
This one got a little offtrack and sometimes contentious on the beta group. Mark had to go so far as to lock the topic.

NEW: First pass at a help section for the upcoming group payments
system.
"This will be a big complicated new feature and I want to get as much
feedback as possible as early as possible during the development of it.
If you have a moment, I'd appreciate any feedback you may have about
it."

NEW: In HTML digests, there are now hashtag mute links in the message
footers. I also did some editing of the text of the other links,
removing some words to make space.
Anon, anon, Wiki footers page updates.

NEW: In the group Hashtags page, each hashtag now has a Mute/Unmute
link.
Yay! A step towards bringing Mute/Unmute functionality to groups' web pages. Now to get Mute & Follow as filters for the Messages / Topics list views...

Comments about these others are also welcome:

BUGFIX: When direct adding someone to a parent group and at least one
subgroup that has a direct add message, we weren't not sending out
the subgroup's direct add message.
BUGFIX: When adding a member to a subgroup, we weren't including the
direct add message, if one was set.
BUGFIX: For groups set to moderate messages with attachments, the
Emailed Photos album would not show up.
BUGFIX: For certain database table searches, only the first page would
be displayed. Other pages would be blank.
API: Return group_name with subscriptions.
CHANGE: For pending message notification emails, add a link at the top
to view the message online.
CHANGE: If a topic has a tag that is moderated, make sure we display
the moderated icon in the Topics view for that topic.
CHANGE: For the event and reminder emails, for all day events that
last more than one day, show both start and end days (we previously
only showed the start day).
BUGFIX: For a pending message sent from a subscriber who then
unsubscribes before the pending message is viewed, do not show the
View Member/Send Message buttons.
BUGFIX: When editing a database row, when you return to view the
previous page, the per page setting was ignored.
BUGFIX: If a topic is locked and has a hashtag that is set to reply to
sender only, replying on the website was not permitted.
BUGFIX: The web server would crash when viewing a past member that had
been subscribed to a subgroup that no longer exists.
CHANGE: Reformatted the mute/unmute hashtag pages to match modern
style.
BUGFIX: If you are the owner/moderator of a parent group viewing a
poll in a subgroup that you are not subscribed to, you should not be
permitted to vote in the poll, because votes are keyed to
subscription records.
BUGFIX: If multiple owners voted in a subgroup poll, the count and
display would be off in the View By Answer poll view (only one
owner's vote(s) would be displayed).

Please call out any you find significant.

Resend "Confirm" message

Charlie at Duke

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Is there any way to resend the "Confirm your [address] email address" message?

I'm the owner of a group that requires moderator approval of membership requests.? On my "Pending Approval" membership list there is someone listed with the "NC" (Not Confirmed) tag.? It has been several days now, and I suspect they may have lost the message with its individualized confirmation reply address (and its similarly individualized confirmation web link).? Is there any way to resend this message?? Note that this is not the same as the "Pending Membership Notice" which can be resent.

I came across (from 2016) which implies that it is possible to resend this confirmation notice, but in 2018 it is not an option on my owner's Pending Approval "Actions" menu.

If the applicant has indeed lost the original confirmation message with its individualized links, what is their best recourse?? Can I do anything as the owner to confirm the subscriber?

Re: Display Name, Profile Fields and Member Directory

Rob,

*2. Profile Fields.* The next thing I wanted was control over
profile fields.
Groups.io generally takes the view that the member's profile is his/hers to control. Even the ability to edit their Display Name is relatively recent.

Members control their profile through their Account's Identity page. There they can edit an Account Profile which provides default content for all of their group subscriptions. While there they can also edit the Profile shown in individual groups. Each profile has a Profile Privacy control which allows the member to control who can see that profile.

A member can also edit the profile for a given group through the Group Profile tab of their Subscription page.

*3. Member Directory. *
I originally hoped to be able to display any of the profile fields I
had added in any order
You can build a "directory" like that in the Database section, but as you already noted there's no way to tie that to subscription or profile information. So you or the members would have to populate the fields of their row explicitly.

Once long ago I suggested providing a directory-like feature by being able to tie a database table to the the Members list. That was kind of a toss-off at the bottom of a message, but you could resurrect the idea with a more fully-formed proposal as a fresh topic in the suggestion box:

... I know I can't be the only one who considers the directory to be
an integral part of the community.
You're not.

You could suggest that the Profile Privacy control be added to the group's Default Sub Settings page, so that you could change the default to "Other members of your group" (probably not "Public").

And/Or suggest that an "All Subscribers Visible" option be added to the Member Directory control (in the Privacy section of the group's Settings page).

Meanwhile you have the bully pulpit of being group moderator/owner to encourage your group members to participate in the group's Directory, such as it is.

JMichaelTX,

Shal, it is now one YEAR later, and the JXA Resources page still
does NOT show up in a Google search.
I find it. But only by doing an exact search for phrases copied from it, such as "post in a topic to the JXA group with a hashtag of #wiki".

You should probably read that entire thread.

When I use the raw html editor and save my work, groups.io strips many inline style definitions that I feel are totally benign. Rumor has it that groups.io itself is using this style sheet, so try applying some of the style definitions in that file to your own html and see if they work in your wiki. I personally never got around to that and am intrigued to hear your results.

Re: Bounching at ATT and Yahoo mail addresses

Don,

My group just recently experienced a large number of members who are
bouncing; /all on the same date October 10th/.
What Duane said.

Have you looked at the "Recent Bounces" on the Email Delivery History tab of those members' pages in the Members list? The bounce reason stated by their email service may be informative.

Another Interesting bit of information; Yahoo groups shows no bouncing
to the same goups.io members.
Even if those members are being sent messages from Y!Groups, their bounce tracking has been unreliable at best over the last couple of years. There are both kinds of errors: good addresses that haven't been removed from bouncing status and bad addresses that haven't been added to it.

There's also a possibility that Y!Group messages were "whitelisted" against whatever caused the the bouncing of the Groups.io messages. That's where the exact response code and text might be informative.

It might be a good Idea for Mark to contact ATT and Yahoo to see if he
can have them correct this issue.
I believe he does track deliverability issues with the various receiving services, so if that was a widespread event he's probably aware of it.

For What It's Worth I don't any members from either service listed as bouncing recently in GMF's Member Activity log, but that's a relatively small sample (10 att.net and 124 yahoo.com members).

Re: Why does OBO appear in posts?

Ken,

I believe it¡¯s not so much what Outlook requires, as it is what the
outgoing email server (in my case imap.aol.com) wants to see.
For DMARC-related issues this is correct. Sending services can publish (via the DNS system) policy guidance that receiving services may use whenever they receive a message that has that sender's domain in the From information, yet was delivered to the receiver by some other service (such as a mailing list).

When Groups.io receives an inbound group posting it checks the published policy of the sender, and if it is "quarantine" or "reject" Groups.io rewrites the From address so that it has groups.io as the domain, in place of the sender domain. That helps to ensure that receiving members' services deliver the message to Inboxes, rather than Spam or rejecting (bouncing) them. That's because messages that are delivered by a server owned by the domain given in the From address are, generally speaking, regarded as less "spammy" than messages that are delivered by an unrelated server.

That said, Outlook and some other services have their own issues with receiving messages that have traveled through mailing lists, especially messages from their own domain. A message claiming to be from their domain that arrives from an external source (e.g. a mailing list) is automatically suspect in their eyes.

I used to use totally POP email on Outlook with my AOL addresses, ...
so switched to imap ...That¡¯s when I noticed I couldn¡¯t use the alias
<ken@weekendrproducts>, I must use <weekendrproducts@...
If you are talking about messages you send I think the switch from POP to IMAP was coincidental. Those protocols are only used when you fetch messages from your email service; when you post you're using SMTP in either case.

If you're talking about how you see messages you receive from the group, that's sounds odd but I suppose not impossible. I would expect your receiving service to apply the OBO rewriting regardless of whether you view the message through their web interface, a POP client, or an IMAP client.

Unless it is your client software doing the OBO rewrite. I suppose that too is possible.

Re: Why does OBO appear in posts?

Loopy,

This morning I sent email to my group using a different email address
(gmail) and it still came through with 'Loopy via groups.io'
I'd have to see the entire From field from the header to understand this. My experience is that messages posted from gmail addresses don't have any rewriting of their From field.

I can understand it being the email provider in one case but in both
email providers? Other people in the group don't have these issues
...
Do you mean that you received the message and looked at it in two different email providers? it is always possible that your email provider is rewriting the From field on messages received from lists for its own reasons.

The fact that other members of your group are not having the issue tends to point a finger at your receiving email service / user interface.

I seem to be unable to create a Markdown table that shows table/cell borders, as shown in this guide:

Here is an example:

First Header Second Header

Content Cell Content Cell

Also, notice how the table headers run together. How do I fix this?

I seriously doubt it.? They're probably not even aware that Groups.io exists.? It's just something that seems to happen regularly with those services.? I'd say about 50% of the time, things start working again before the members go to Bounced (red) status, possibly a bit more.
