Re: Are other groups seeing lots of possibly spammy registration attempts?

Understood. That's partly why I sent email by hand, from my personal account (not from groups.io) to the subscribing addresses. I figured such emails wouldn't be as obviously routed into the spam folder, though they do mention groups.io by name in the body of the message. I wish there was a way to prove or disprove this. I figure if someone really wanted into our group and they don't get in, they will come back and ask again. We don't ban them... just not allow them in. It's not the end of the world in any case. I wish there was a way to really confirm this sort of thing. If I cannot get people to reply to the Pending Subscriber message - despite resending it 5 or 6 times and sending them a personal email on the same topic - maybe I should just fail their request and move on. I would think there is a way for groups.io to track overall membership failure rates. If lots of people are requesting membership and not getting it, that would probably imply lots of spammers out there in the world. And those I am happy to ignore. --jeffp |

LeeAnne,
Can I assume from this post that PDF will never be coming back to notI wouldn't assume "never", but it probably won't be a priority and might end up as practically never unless he get's some push-back on the issue. Mark's #changelog item didn't go into any detail about the nature of the vulnerability, or whether it can be resolved in a way that permits in-browser display of files, or at least certain types of files. We have 9 pages of folders all of which contain at least one documentOne work-around that I think has been mentioned is to use the group's Wiki for those documents instead of Files. With so many files to switch over that wouldn't provide instant gratification, but you could spread out the effort by first creating a set of wiki pages that serve as a TOC or an index to the files, linking to them. But then each time a file needs to be updated, take that as the moment to re-write it as a wiki page; then update the TOC/index page to point to the new wiki page instead of the old file. The payoff in the longer run is that Wiki pages are designed to updated by multiple users, and they let you keep track of and manage the updates. The ease of updating them may encourage more timely updates. A downside is that the formatting available in the Wiki editor is not as flexible as features you may have used in Word or other tools you have been using to create those PDF files. So the Wiki approach may not work very well for documents with more than just basic formatting. Another downside is that the Wiki doesn't present a nested folder view of the pages comparable to the folder structure for files. Instead you must manually organize them using pages of links (as I've done in GMF's Wiki). Shal |

I haven't really seen this because most of my groups allow immediate membership. I do have them set to moderate the first few messages from a new member (NuM), so I could catch spammers (though there haven't been any so far ;>) I'm not sure if this would work for you or not. The only spam posts I've gotten are non-members trying to send to the groups.

Are other groups seeing lots of possibly spammy registration attempts?

Hi All, Our group here - with over 2000 members - is in the middle of a series of some of the worst rainstorms in recent history in our area. As we are a neighborhood group, we're getting a lot of new signups as people ask about road conditions, etc. That's all good. But, we also have a bunch of signups that are less clear to us. Our group is configured so that all signups have to be approved by the moderators, and we have a Pending Subscription message that goes to each person signing up, asking for just enough information to confirm that they are really a human and really part of our community. Usually people get that Pending Subscription notice and respond to it within a day or two, and we let them in. Often they will respond within minutes. Right now, however, we have a stack that haven't been responded to in days. ?But just as I am about to deny all the old ones, some user will actually reply to an old one with real information and I let them in. So the question is, has groups.io been found by the spammers and are they signing up for accounts here in some quantity?? Or, alternately, are Pending Subscription notices going into spam folders more often than I would have thought, and people aren't finding them? ?(And yes, we resend those notices regularly. I have even hand sent emails to those people myself - rather than through groups.io, and I still get no response from most of them. And that really does seem to indicate these are spammy signups, since spammers won't rely as a rule. But...) What is the experience of other moderators and owners here? Are you seeing more spammy membership requests of late? Thanks. --jeffp |
Re: Logging in to Yahoo Groups
Janice,
Sometimes, I find it necessary to log in to my old Yahoo Group. WhenMisplaced question. That's what I get for approving in haste via smartphone, I didn't notice that you posted here rather than in Y!GMF. In any case, no. I didn't have a problem signing into Yahoo just now. But I did notice that they've got a new sign-in feature, like Google it is now easier to switch between accounts. So maybe you caught it during the roll-out of the new feature. Or maybe your browser has a stale cache of the sign-in page. Try again, or try the browser ritual. Shal |

Sometimes, I find it necessary to log in to my old Yahoo Group. ?When I try, I am getting the purple error bar at the bottom. ?I tried logging in to other Yahoo Groups I belong to and get the same thing. ?Silly question I know, but is anyone aware a problem going on this weekend? Janice B AZ |

Drats! ?Also wanted to say how much I love these updates of yours. ?I am not techy and am up to eyeballs with busy in our group so don't have time to try to understand and follow Beta. ? These updates are a total time and brain saver. ?You rock.?

Re: Groups.io site updates

Late as usual but Shal, our group totally miss the ability to view PDF without downloading. ?So much so I was hoping someday the same would happen with Word docs. ?We have 9 pages of folders all of which contain at least one document - many have sub folder and can contain several documents. These documents are updated constantly (or should be darn it!) so a fresh download is needed each time it is looked at. ?? Can I assume from this post that PDF will never be coming back to not requiring a download? ?Archivist |
Groups.io site updates
#changelog
Hi all,
Not much caught my interest in this week's message from Mark about updates to the site: /g/beta/message/12720 Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change. Sent a message to updates@ This is only of interest because he hadn't posted anything there since last April. So a fairly long list of changes since then: /g/updates/message/20 Of significance (to me) in the updates message: o Chat o Two-factor security. o You can upload and include images in Wiki pages. I think he missed at least one of significance: the ability to have Files, Photos, Databases, and Links copied from your Yahoo Group as part of the Easy Group Transfer. But then he did say that the message would have to have been much longer to include all the improvements. Back to the changelog, anyone have comments about these, or others: o Approving a pending message to a closed thread will now work. o Changes by Facebook broke integrations. o With yahoo group transfers, add a note saying members have been added to the updates group. o For enterprise groups, direct add should not add people to updates@. o For messages originating in email (not web), we resized inline images to a max of 640x640, regardless of what the group settings were. o HTML footers were missing Reply to Sender/Group for groups set to reply to both. Please call out any you find significant. Shal |

Brenda,
I want to add to this, the fact that you add a link to where theIn each thread-starter I've included a link back to Mark's posting in beta@ so that interested people can easily go see what else he said. I've not attempted to track down any further discussion within beta@ of the particular items. I'm going to leave that as an exercise for you, dear readers, else I might not ever complete one of these postings. Anyone interested in a volunteer research-assistant job could take on the task of citing and summarizing any further discussion there may be on particular items. Of particular interest might be if Mark expressed a motivation for choosing one suggested implementation versus another. Shal |

Brenda,
This would help me greatly. I am trying to keep up with the groupsThis thread (and its siblings) is a good place to ask for explanations. So if you are willing to do this thread or topic or whatever you areTwo down. We'll see if I can keep up. I'm using the same #changelog tag as he uses in beta, you can use it to follow or filter this sequence of threads. Shal |

I want to add to this, the fact that you add a link to where the change was discussed or made is even more helpful. I was having problems finding where an item on Mark's #changelog list was at in the group. Brenda |

Re: always taken back to Topics view - can people here shed some light?
Donald, No, it's not the default. It's supposed to remember where you were. The bug is recent and I was asking here to see if anyone else has experienced it. With you, that makes three.

J_Catlady,
It works the same way for me as it does for you, so it appears that's the default setting when you land on your group's page. Groups.io site updates
#changelog
Hi all,
Time for Mark's weekly message about updates to the site: /g/beta/message/12652 Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change. Changed the messages threading algorithm: 1. If a message has threading information, use that. (same as before) 2. If a message does not have threading information: 3. If it's a web post, assume it's the start of a new thread 4. If the subject starts with Re:, look for a matching subject within the last 30 days 5. If the subject does not start with Re:, look for a matching subject within the last 2 days New here is 3: before it was possible for a message posted via the Groups.io "New Topic" button to be threaded in by way of a Subject match. New here also is 5, and item 4 extended to 30 days (had been 7 days). Note that "same as before" on 1 refers to the incoming message having at least one citation header field (In-Reply-To or References) which cites a prior message in the same group. With the additional requirement that the Subject field also match (ignoring Re: and similar). The 'View/Reply Online' link in HTML messages now goes to the message. Yay! ... and also displays the message number... double yay! This is the link that had been broken, but when fixed was made a link to the topic. But if the topic had a lot of replies that left you scrolling down to find the one you wanted to view/reply. This way is better IMO. You can request RSVPs for repeating events. I'm not sure, but I think that means you already could for one-time events? Sorry I haven't been paying much attention to the calendar feature. Removed Google Hangouts integration. Apparently Google disabled the interface that made this possible. I use Hangouts (love them for family communication) but hadn't tried integrating them with groups. And a herd of minutia: o Polls can now be anonymous. o Additional image resize option of 312 x 312 o New users default to America/Los Angeles timezone instead of GMT o Reminder to set up profile photo or Display Name when you log in o Mod/owner and Poll creator can see who responded, and can email them. The are other items that didn't capture my attention. Please call out any you find significant. Shal |
