Hww can I repeat notice to user to confirm his email address? #membership #howto

I have few users that request membership but did not confirm their email addresses.

How can I initiate sending reminder message that would instruct them to confirm email address.

Re: How to set calendar on speceific weekend in year #calendar

Bit cumbersome but it works.

Thanks!

Re: How to disable user? #membership

I tried with settings to no email but it seems to be quite a hassle and is not obvious to see in member list.

If I could change Role to Suspended that would be exactly what I need. I think that would be usable for others too.

Re: Links to older pages with group name change #groupname

Frances,

Will links to older messages automatically find the new URL? And
similarly, links to the home page?
No.

There is no redirection set in place to cause old links stored elsewhere (like a member's bookmarks) to redirect to the new address of the group. This is because the old address becomes immediately available for re-use.

Which provides you with the opportunity to immediately stand up a place-holder group under the old name, saying "We've moved". It could say that on the home page and in a first and only post.

You would lock down the placeholder with only yourself as a member (Restricted Membership, and don't approve anyone). You could set a Pending Subscription member notice saying "we've moved", so that you don't have to manually respond to anyone that attempts to join the placeholder.

Any other suggestions or cautionary notes?
As with the Yahoo Groups trick, you can set the placeholder group to allow non-subscribers to post, and then if anything lands in the pending queue Reject with a member notice that reiterates the "we've moved" message. This will catch any member that forgets to update their address book, or replies to an old message.

No...groups.io does not parse old messages and update any related links for you. A name change is kinda like a transfer from Yahoo in that regard.

Any other suggestions or cautionary notes?
I think you've already identified the main problem.?See also /g/GroupManagersForum/topic/18100671#8144?

That's great evidence.

Particularly interesting is the outbound To address:
To: Rirethy via Email Integration <[email protected]@%!s(MISSING)>
It seems like it should have stopped at "groups.io" and then it would have (correctly) been your group's posting address. The extra "@%!s(MISSING)" looks a little bit like a fragment of coding that somehow leaked through, perhaps a string substitution gone wrong.

I think you should take the headers and explanation you've given here and send it to [email protected] as a bug report. Or if more convenient, send the link to your post to support, along with a step-by-step explanation of how you set up the integration and tested it.

Thanks for your answer.
See answers below

Le?sam. 15 sept. 2018 ¨¤?21:13, Shal Farley <shals2nd@...> a ¨¦crit?:
thierry,

?> If I make a "reply all" to that mail I've receive, It fills the
?> recipients of that reply.

What does it put in the To (or CC) fields? You might expect it to be
your non-subscriber address (the one that sent the message) plus the
group's posting address.

In the To field, I have 2 addresses :
  • [email protected]
    • Which is the email address of my list
  • Rirethy via Email Integration <"[email protected]"@%!s >
    • Where rirethy is the name of my list. It is not at all the email address of my non-subscriber
But Reply All is one of those features which operates somewhat
differently at different email interfaces.

I have exactly the same behaviour using Gmail webmail, or thunderbird under win10

?> And, It adds an mail address as recipient that ends with :
?> "groups.io@%!s". Obviously it"s an non valid email address.

Can you examine the header of the message you received? Of interest are
the From, To, CC, List-Id, and Reply-To fields. Maybe also Sender, if
there is one. These are the fields normally used, in some fashion, by an
email interface's Reply and Reply All functions.

If that oddball address is in one of those fields, then we'd also want
to look at the header fields of the message as you sent it (from your
non-subscriber address). Your email interface for that address may let
you see a copy of what it thinks it sent, but it would be better to send
another message to the integration address, and this time CC yourself
directly (at an address where you can examine the received message's
header).

Comparing those two sets of fields (on the way in to Groups.io, and on
the way out from it) will likely reveal the origin of the oddball address.

Re-posting messages #announcement

Not a week goes by that I don't "discover" something new re groups.io features, etc.

I see in the settings there are various configurations for allowing members to "repost" messages.

Could someone briefly explain to me, exactly how a member can repost a message? I will admit (guilty!) I'm sorta curious for myself, as it would come in handy to repost various announcements that I make from time to time as a moderator, without copying and pasting and creating a new message.

Thanks.

Links to older pages with group name change #groupname

Hi

Linda and I are thinking of changing our group name and had a question or two.?

Will links to older messages automatically find the new URL??And similarly, links to the home page?

Any other suggestions or cautionary notes?

Thanks.?
Frances

Re: Managing main group

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.? You've given me a lot to ponder. We currently have 2 Yahoo groups setup..one that for newsletters and announcements that only the Moderator can post, and one for discussions.? Of the 500 or so members in our club, less than half are in the discussion group, and almost all are in the announcements group.? And there is yet a 3rd Yahoo groups reserved for the board of directors (15 members).? My hope is to consolidate all three into one groups.io group, so it seems like John Russel's approach is best--?

1.? Setup the Main group for announcements and newsletters and configure it so that only the moderator can post to it.
2.? Setup a General Discussion group as a subgroup of the Main group and let members subscribe to that as they wish
3.? Setup a Board of Directors group with membership limited to the Board
4.? Encourage people to use hashtags to follow specific threads so they don't get overloaded in the general discussion group and setup a small number of very focused subgroups (like Buy-Sell-Trade) that members can self-subscribe.

Glad to be able to offer you some help, Marilyn, but I myself wouldn't have known anything about this without that both Bruce and Shal pointed out the liklihood that I was signing in with the wrong email address when it first happened to me.

GMF is a great resource for Mods like ourselves helping out other Mods on Groups.io.

A lot of things which happen to newbee Mods seem pretty much incomprehensible at first. It's good to have others who can help us newbees get on the right track.

BTW ¨C It really does get easier as you go along here, Marilyn.

Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

This week's change log:

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the
changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new
topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

NEW: When direct adding people to a parent group and subgroups, only
send out one direct add notification to each member.
This happened hours too late for my recent batch of PTA members. Still, glad to have less confusion on that front. Now, if I'd only remembered to uncheck the Active box for the default Welcome notice of that subgroup ...

This is why one should always pre-flight a Direct Add (or Invite) using a spare email address that is not already a member. I know that, but got in a rush and forgot to do it.

CHANGE: Added text to banner that is displayed when invites or direct
adds need to be approved to hopefully explain things better.
Thanks Toby and Jim for suggesting this.

BUGFIX: Pending subscriptions older than two weeks were not being
deleted.
Thanks debbie for reporting this.

Comments about these others are also welcome:

NEW: Add the group subject tag to the subject of private replies.
INTERNAL: Added support for postgresql integer arrays.
INTERNAL: Upgraded the postgresql go package.
BUGFIX: There was a bug in the subgroup display page when categories
are set up that could cause groups in the same category to not be
displayed together.
CHANGE: On the pending message page, display the 'Ban Sender' even for
existing members.
BUGFIX: For some reason, Google lost our geocode API key, which
prevented the database map view from working. Had to recreate the
key.
CHANGE: When rejecting a pending subscription by email, ignore the
request if the subscription is not, in fact, pending (ie it's been
approved already).
NEW: New group setting, Viruses, to set whether messages with viruses
are blocked or moderated.
API: New group field: HandleVirus
CHANGE: Do not log a change in user or display name in the activity
log of any group the user is banned from.
CHANGE: In activity log, change "Rejected message" to "Message
rejected".
Please call out any you find significant.

Re: From gmail address requires approval each time? #moderation #messages

Dave,

Hi, I have a small group which includes 2 gmail users. Each time
either send and email to the group it comes to me for Approval. Both
are listed as override, no approval needed.
The override only overrides the Moderated checkbox in the Spam Control section of the group's Settings page. All of the other conditions listed in the other thread still apply:
/g/GroupManagersForum/message/11774

There's nothing specific about gmail users as relates to message moderation. My suspicion in your case is that those two users aren't actually sending from their subscribed email address, and so the moderation of non-subscribers applies.

Re: About Invitations

Ilene,

I entered their email address in lowercase letters.
Now when their email shows up in the membership list it is all caps.
Possibly Groups.io takes the email address on their acceptance of the invitation as the authoritative spelling (capitalization) of their address, rather than what you sent in the invitation. That's just a guess though.

Been awhile since the last update. New member this morning is number

In a few days (9/23) we should help Mark celebrate the fourth anniversary of announcing Groups.io to the public.

Thanks Barb!

... you might check your Attachments setting (in Message Formatting).
Added to my list (edited message).

Andy,

I ran through your complete list. However, none of those things apply
in our case.
Including Barb's additional reason?

I firmly believe there will be a reason each of those messages ended up in Pending. It might not be the same for all of them, but each will have at least one reason.

If we havn't listed it here yet it might be time to cite one of those messages to [email protected] to find out the reason. I've also made a request that each pending message should show its specific reason.

Let us know if you learn anything.

Hello Marilyn,

I had something like you are describing happen to me early onright? after I'd set up my own Gorups.io group . . .? I suddenly one day no longer had any access to the Admin functions on that group.

What had happened is that I had logged in with my Owner account email and then got an unsubscribed message.? Then when I went and logged back in that's when the Admin button went missing.

What it turned out to be was that I had logged back in to my own group using a different email ¨Cwhich I had used when I'd joined it (as a member). that alternate email was one I'd used to also join a completely different IO group¨C? and so when I tried logging into my own group I inadvertently used the wrong email address.

That possibility was pointed out to me by one for the GMF members on here and when I finally checked that is exactly what I had done.

So then when I logged in again usng the correct email address for my own group, voil¨¤!¨C there was the Admin button and all my access was available to me again.

So your problem could likely be something so simple as that.

Cheers & Good Luck!
