Re: Can I move my Big Tent group to groups.io? #transfer

Milt,

BigTent responded saying that they will not take action on requests
from anyone other than the current moderator of a group, so we will
funnel our request through the current moderator. I'll do a post here
on any response we receive.
I'm confused.

From yesterday's post I thought you already had a response - and a very positive one at that!
/g/GroupManagersForum/message/11476

I had meant to reply to that message but hadn't gotten to it yet. So I guess now's the time.

The dump was in .tgz format, and our tech guru, Bob Leder,
successfully created a simple python program to convert the entries
from that dump into email messages and mail them individually to our
groups.io group. They're showing up just perfectly on the new group.
Presumably they're showing as From Bob, and with the date he ran the program. Did he include the original poster's name and the original date in his (program's) messages?

In any case though, bravo!

It seems to me that something of the sort could be done with messages caught in any proprietary format - such as a PG Offline export of a Yahoo Group, or an mbox export from a Mailman list, or ...

Re: Changes to the Groups.io site this week: #changelog

Donald,

To save Shal the trouble, these are the changes Mark has made to the
groups.io system.
That would be:

Feel free to discuss any of these items.
I normally like to start off with some commentary on at least one of the items. Though some weeks none of them particularly excite me.

CHANGE: Tweaked the wording of 'Default Post Policy' and 'Default
group policy' to be more clear.
Now the Actions menu and the Posting Privileges option in the member's page both say "Use Group Moderation Setting".

You're welcome.
(I'd suggested the change in a request to support)

CHANGE: Disable Action button on Members page if no members are
selected.
You're welcome.

Jim,

notification I will receive, if any.
The In Process page for your transfer should tell you the status of your invitation. If it says it has been received then you're good. You'll be emailed (at the address that initiated the transfer) further instructions once the transfer agent accepts the invitation.

Re: Transfer help

Thanks Mark and Don!

Reading what you both experienced, I decided to try the transfer start a 4th time. And, thankfully, it worked! So, I must conclude that either the site was busy and my request did not go through because of that, or perhaps I tried to initiate the transfer too soon after the new group was approved.? I had received the email notifying me of the approval, and the new group name was in the drop-down menu, but maybe there is some minimum time I did not achieve between approval and initiating a transfer.

Again, my thanks to you both!

We transferred two groups from Yahoo into one IO group and all three
group names were different, so transferring to a group with a
different name should not matter.

A general word on attachment policy. Why would anyone want to ban attachments?

Attachments are dangerous because they are a favorite tool of criminal hackers for infecting computer systems.

In addition to criminals deliberately trying to infect us, we have the innocent, unsuspecting (and ignorant) subscribers who become infected via that cute "fill in the blank" forwarded by "Aunt Sally"... who runs every attachment and clicks every link that anyone sends her.

As with some other things in life, it's not just what's in front of us... it's ALL the things received and possibly clicked on by the person who sent the ONE thing that's in front of us.

When the transfer agent has accepted the invitation and joined your Yahoo group, you will receive an email to that effect. If you don't know how to send a Yahoo invitation, that information can be found at??

Marv,

Attachments are dangerous because they? are a favorite tool of criminal hackers for infecting computer systems.

Nothing is perfect, but it is worth noting that Groups.io will be scanning for infected messages, attachments and uploads.

Defense in layers though: keep your guard up. Both your suspicions about things that arrive by email and any scanning your own email service and software does.

Re: Is it possible to change all member of a group to receive no attachments, unless they change it?

A general word on attachment policy. Why would anyone want to ban attachments?

Attachments are dangerous because they? are a favorite tool of criminal hackers for infecting computer systems. They can be used in several ways. An old, but still used, method is to embed code known as macros into Microsoft Word documents. Macros execute when a Word doc (or docx) is opened. They are intended to do useful things like adjust dates to reflect the current date, but they can also do nasty things like download viruses and malware. For example, a Word macro could start a series of events that turns your computer into a device for forwarding spam under the control of a master criminal in a remote country.

Similar things can be done with .zip files and some image files.

There are ways to protect yourself from attachments, but they require a little technical sophistication that not everyone has.

Email reflector services like groups.io are particularly attractive to criminals because sending out a single attachment to a group will be forwarded to many recipients. In my opinion, alternatives like embedded links are slightly safer because they leave a clearer trail back to the origin of the content, but those trails can also be obscured and the damage from following a malicious link can easily be as bad as that from a malicious attachment. Embedded links also only transfer data when they are clicked so they can be more resource friendly.

I am not saying that attachments should always be banned, but do think your policy through carefully. Large groups with many lurking and unknown members should be particularly careful. That applies to more than just attachment policy.
Best, Marv

Re: Duplicate message to message originator #messages

Motti,

I've done some testing around this and have some new info for you, ...
You didn't say, but I'm assuming that your tests are all messages sent by yourself, from the same Gmail account where you are observing the results.

2. Only happens for newly originated messages, does not happen for
replies - for sure, tested
What /does/ happen for replies? No message or just one?

3. ... why would I get 2? is one related to the setting of getting
copy of my messages and one since I am a subscriber?
No, you misunderstand. The one I called "as sent" never left your Gmail account. It is not a return from Groups.io at all.

The one "via Groups.io" is the return from Groups.io. It was sent to you since you are a subscriber, and you can see it in Gmail because you checked the setting in your Groups.io account.

You can readily see the difference if you use Show Original on such a pair. The "as sent" has a very short header, detailing the sending of the message. The "via Groups.io" has a much lengthier header, detailing its trip through Groups.io and back again.

With the box I always want copies of my own messages NOT checked

* No emails received at all!
One reason I can think of for the difference between Composed and Replied messages is that Composed messages would lack the group's tag in the Subject line as sent, but would have it upon return. Perhaps that difference in the Subject text is what prompts Gmail to make the returned copy visible in your Inbox.

You can test that theory by deleting the group tag on your next Reply.

* I would expect to only get one message since I am a subscriber
You may have. Check your Sent folder in Gmail. I have no idea why, but Gmail shows me both the "as sent" and the "via groups.io" copies of my messages in that folder. (Actually I do have an idea, it likely relates to the fact that what I think of as folders, in Gmail are actually just search filters based on tags applied to messages.)

If you don't see "via groups.io" replies in Sent, it is possible that you have your Groups.io Subscription, Advanced Preferences, set to "Following Only" plus "First Message Also". That would suppress delivery of replies back to you unless you Follow the topic, (use the link in the footer of the topic starter). Thanks to Gerald for that off-list observation.

Almost sounds to me like the setting /I always want copies of my own
messages /is not working correctly? what do you think?
It is always possible that you've run into some kind of edge case. All I can tell you is that Gmail and Groups.io are working together sensibly for me and have been for years.

I have Conversation mode turned off in Gmail, "I always want copies of my own messages" checked in my Groups.io account Preferences, and both "Individual Messages" and "All Emails" selected in my group Subscriptions. With the result that I see exactly one copy (via Groups.io) of both Composed and Replied messages in my Gmail Inbox (and in my Thunderbird copy of the Inbox via IMAP).

Re: Can I move my Big Tent group to groups.io? #transfer

Shal,

Upon request, BigTent Support sent our group's BigTent moderator a dump of all discussions dating from the time the group moved to BigTent in 2014 up to to a few days ago.? It took a few days for them to get this done.? The dump was in .tgz format, and our tech guru, Bob Leder,?successfully created a simple python program to convert the entries from that dump into email messages and mail them individually to our??group.? They're showing up just perfectly on the new group. Looks like he's nailed the process,?and he has just emailed BigTent support that if they are interested he'll go through the process of making the program more presentable and forward it.? If anyone here would like it, please contact Bob directly:?Robert Leder?<robertfleder@...>
?
Bob has also asked BigTent if we can get a .tgz or?other dump?of our files and/or pictures.? He notes that we could have someone manually do the work or he try to hack together a program?to to?the download, but it would obviously be easier if BigTent could provide a dump or link.? That was just sent and we've had no response yet from BigTent.

Bottom line: BigTent Support has been more helpful with our migration than we expected.? Thanks to that, it looks like moving our group from BigTent to Groups.io is going to be much easier than we expected.? I'll keep this forum informed of our progress.
