G.io needs to update Facebook PAGE #integration facts #integration

AL Guevara

When adding my page () to my group integration, I get Error:

That name does not appear to be the name of a Facebook Page.

When asking this prob here, I get folk saying to make my page PUBLIC. But that's fallacy. All FB PAGES are PUBLIC, only FB Groups or FB Profile can enact privacy.

I've been running or help run, FB Groups & Pages since 2010.

From Facebook HELP area.
Pages are public spaces so people can access them whether they have liked the Page or not. However, you can place certain age and geographical restrictions on your Page.

To learn more about Page visibility, check out our Help Center:

If you want to make your Page completely private, I'd suggest you create a group instead. Pages allow real organizations, businesses, celebrities and brands to communicate broadly with people who like them. Groups provide a space for people to communicate about shared interests and allows for more Privacy options.

For more information about the differences between groups and Pages check out this Help Center Article:

Re: Group default settings for Photos

If you just want to sort chronologically, name them with dates in ISO format; i.e., 2018-08-20 if posted today.

Received from Dotty Bell at 8/20/2018 06:36 PM UTC:

Currently, my "work around" for keeping the most recent albums at the beginning of our Photos pages, is to name my albums with a leading zero, such as "0-August 2018". This puts them before any of the "alphabetic" only albums. But this is not ideal. I would much prefer to be able to choose a default for the group that will sort them chronologically by the date posted.

Sorry Bruce but that's for "Profile" privacy, not "PAGE" or "GROUP" Privacy

Group default settings for Photos

Before requesting this as an option on Beta, I thought I would bring it up on GMF first.? Perhaps it has been discussed here or on Beta before and I just didn't find it.? I find the Alphabetical default setting for photos less than optimal for our group use.? We are a small group, but one of our primary uses is for sharing "show & tell " photos each week.? I create an album for each month, into which the photos are posted weekly.? Ideally, I would like the option to make the default group settings to sort the photo albums (and photos within each album) by date.?

Yes, I know that each subscriber can change the sort order when viewing the photos online.? But that selection reverts to the default alphabetical listing each time the group is visited.? I might be successful in teaching my members how to change the setting once, but most of them are unlikely to remember how to do it or be willing to do it each time.? We are, in general, not a tech savvy nor tech comfortable group of older ladies.? (I'm not implying that this applies to all "old ladies", but it is accurate for my particular group.)? When I post a message telling them that new photos have been added, I include a link that will take them to the proper album.

Currently, my "work around" for keeping the most recent albums at the beginning of our Photos pages, is to name my albums with a leading zero, such as "0-August 2018". This puts them before any of the "alphabetic" only albums.? But this is not ideal.? I would much prefer to be able to choose a default for the group that will sort them chronologically by the date posted.? In other words, I would like to be able to choose among the options available within each album, and have them apply to the group.? This would give each group owner the ability to choose a default that would be most suitable for their use.

Has this been requested on Beta previously?? If so, any idea if it is on Mark's to do list?? Shall I request it again?

Thanks,
Dotty

Don,
The Sent Invitations tab will display the names/addresses.? There is no download function though so to capture them you can select the text on the screen and copy/paste.? It will be tab separated columns so you can paste into Excel (right click and use Match Destination Formatting option), then grab the column of addresses and paste those into your email program To: (or better yet BCC:) field to send an email to all of them at once.

Re: Sent invitations

In Admin, Invite. Already sent - Sent Invitations tab.
You could edit the invitation email so it says what you want it to say.

Or go to Admin, Settings, Member Notices and create a followup notice there. Edit the Welcome letter.

Re: Muting a member

Too bad.? Our group is supposed to be about answering members' questions and providing news about upcoming events in the area.? But we have a few fluffheads who seem intent on lowering the signal-to-noise ratio with comments like "that's wonderful" or "wish I was there" and treating our 1,300 member group as their personal blog. The group owner doesn't seem to want to chastise them, so I'd be happy if at least I could mute them from my own inbox.

The system has the ability to remember my preferences for muted hashtags. I wish it could similarly remember my preference for muted e-mail addresses.

My Fb deal is? PAGE, not a Group, G.io specifacally says this Int. is for a PAGE, not a group.

Hopefully someone else here will know. I only barely navigate Facebook.

Your page is visible to me logged in, but not when logged out. That's a
requirement for the integration because Groups.io isn't logged in to
Facebook.

Re: Major issues in my group, spoofed or something internal in IO??? Help please.

Thanks Shal. That's more or less what I understood from the discussion, without
being sure in the case of SPF and DKIM. I knew about DMARC from discussions
here and on Beta, and had taken action about that on my own web site (now
temporarily closed until I find a new host), where visitors could send emails
to other people direct from the site. For that I put a DMARC-valid address in
the "From" field and the sender's only in the "Reply to" field, which seemed to
work. That was quite a long time ago now. Mark's problem is of course rather
different and not so easily solved.

That's the one I was referring to.

They are email authentication standards. Plus a newer one, DMARC, which
is built on those two. Most receiving services take one or more of these
tests into account when deciding whether to deliver a message to your
inbox or to your spam folder, or not at all (reject, aka "bounce" it).

> ... but since everything is working fine (and has been for 22 years

Most receiving services will make allowances for the fact that not every
legit sender uses these newer (newer than email itself anyway) standards
that have been put in place to stem the tide of viruses, robo-spam and
other abuses. Groups.io, for example, doesn't currently use those tests
on inbound messages - which left the door open to the abuse the OP
(Gilly) suffered.

So Mark is currently trying to work out how to tighten up the inbound
security, without impacting legitimate traditional use cases such as
yours. My fingers are crossed that he'll be able to do something that is
effective but low- or no-impact for use cases like yours.

I have just in the process of migrating a large group from Yahoo which Yahoo seems to have deleted (not by me, but by Yahoo).

One of the things I found a bit scary is that on the bottom right of the Settings page of groups.io there is a "Delete Group" button.
I don't know about you but I am so used to clicking a button when it's on the bottom right of a page.

Wouldn't it be better to have that button hidden away somewhere so that you would have to click at least three things to get there?

Perhaps I don't have a clear picture of your use case.

You want to pin a topic containing an ongoing conversation, yet not form the conversation by replies?

If what you're posting is akin to an index of available chats perhaps it should be a single post that you edit periodically.

If what you're posting is akin to a periodic "free-for-all" topic where members can stray from the normal group topic maybe it needn't be pinned or merged.

An example is the "Groups.io site updates #changelog" set of posts in GMF. I create each as a New Topic (via email) and initially sought a way to gather them as a single topic. Then I realized that would be ungainly for members to use: eventually the latest one would be at the bottom of a very long topic full of stale ones.

So instead I rely on the hashtag #changelog to make them all findable, if a member wants to refer to the old ones.

It¡¯s possible a sub group might be the answer....
Possibly.

That is a common choice in forum structures, where casual, off-topic, or meta-topic conversations can be had outside of the main forum. Sometimes these are referred to as cafe or lounge areas.

An advantage of using a subgroup for this is that the extraneous postings are not presented to (or emailed to) the main members, unless they join the subgroup. And in the subgroup each member has a separate set of subscription controls - a member could receive individual messages from the main group, for example, but digests from the subgroup.

-----

And then there's the Chat feature. But that may be a wholly different thing than what you have in mind.

Thanks for the help. I don¡¯t think locking the topic will solve our problem and merging multiple conversations that will continue forever would be a lot of work. It¡¯s possible a sub group might be the answer....will have to see how those work.?
