Re: Muting a member
Too bad.? Our group is supposed to be about answering members' questions and providing news about upcoming events in the area.? But we have a few fluffheads who seem intent on lowering the signal-to-noise ratio with comments like "that's wonderful" or "wish I was there" and treating our 1,300 member group as their personal blog. The group owner doesn't seem to want to chastise them, so I'd be happy if at least I could mute them from my own inbox. |

being sure in the case of SPF and DKIM. I knew about DMARC from discussions here and on Beta, and had taken action about that on my own web site (now temporarily closed until I find a new host), where visitors could send emails to other people direct from the site. For that I put a DMARC-valid address in the "From" field and the sender's only in the "Reply to" field, which seemed to work. That was quite a long time ago now. Mark's problem is of course rather different and not so easily solved. Jim On 18 Aug 2018 at 16:45, Shal Farley wrote:

AL,
Been looking in PAGE settings for private/public anything, and I cantHopefully someone else here will know. I only barely navigate Facebook. Your page is visible to me logged in, but not when logged out. That's a requirement for the integration because Groups.io isn't logged in to Facebook. Subject: [GMF] "Delete Group" button on Settings page ? I have just in the process of migrating a large group from Yahoo which Yahoo seems to have deleted (not by me, but by Yahoo). One of the things I found a bit scary is that on the bottom right of the Settings page of groups.io there is a "Delete Group" button. I don't know about you but I am so used to clicking a button when it's on the bottom right of a page. Wouldn't it be better to have that button hidden away somewhere so that you would have to click at least three things to get there? ? |

Re: Topics
Joan,
... merging multiple conversations that will continue foreverPerhaps I don't have a clear picture of your use case. You want to pin a topic containing an ongoing conversation, yet not form the conversation by replies? If what you're posting is akin to an index of available chats perhaps it should be a single post that you edit periodically. If what you're posting is akin to a periodic "free-for-all" topic where members can stray from the normal group topic maybe it needn't be pinned or merged. An example is the "Groups.io site updates #changelog" set of posts in GMF. I create each as a New Topic (via email) and initially sought a way to gather them as a single topic. Then I realized that would be ungainly for members to use: eventually the latest one would be at the bottom of a very long topic full of stale ones. So instead I rely on the hashtag #changelog to make them all findable, if a member wants to refer to the old ones. It¡¯s possible a sub group might be the answer....Possibly. That is a common choice in forum structures, where casual, off-topic, or meta-topic conversations can be had outside of the main forum. Sometimes these are referred to as cafe or lounge areas. An advantage of using a subgroup for this is that the extraneous postings are not presented to (or emailed to) the main members, unless they join the subgroup. And in the subgroup each member has a separate set of subscription controls - a member could receive individual messages from the main group, for example, but digests from the subgroup. ----- And then there's the Chat feature. But that may be a wholly different thing than what you have in mind. Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |

Re: Major issues in my group, spoofed or something internal in IO??? Help please.
Jim,
Some of my confusion comes from your reference to "talktalk servers".They came up because the IP address that delivered your message to Groups.io belonged to them. My ISP, through which I send emails, is Talktalk Residential (who useThat's the one I was referring to. In addition, I had not heard of either SPF or DKIM before and I'm notThey are email authentication standards. Plus a newer one, DMARC, which is built on those two. Most receiving services take one or more of these tests into account when deciding whether to deliver a message to your inbox or to your spam folder, or not at all (reject, aka "bounce" it). ... but since everything is working fine (and has been for 22 yearsMost receiving services will make allowances for the fact that not every legit sender uses these newer (newer than email itself anyway) standards that have been put in place to stem the tide of viruses, robo-spam and other abuses. Groups.io, for example, doesn't currently use those tests on inbound messages - which left the door open to the abuse the OP (Gilly) suffered. So Mark is currently trying to work out how to tighten up the inbound security, without impacting legitimate traditional use cases such as yours. My fingers are crossed that he'll be able to do something that is effective but low- or no-impact for use cases like yours. I get the feeling you are really asking about what happens to your existing group at Yahoo. The answer is nothing. Groups.io just makes a copy.
When my group was transferred I immediately put the Yahoo? group on moderated status, and I edited the home page to point to groups.io. It has been over a year and the Yahoo group is still there, unused. If you want the Yahoo group as backup it will stay there until Yahoo goes belly-up. |

is working fine (and has been for 22 years now) I'm not proposing to make any immediate changes. Some of my confusion comes from your reference to "talktalk servers". There are two parts of Talktalk involved, which hardly seem aware of one anothers' existence. My domain name is registered with Talktalk Business (I think they use talktalk.co.uk), and that is where I receive emails. My ISP, through which I send emails, is Talktalk Residential (who use the talktalk.net domain). In addition, I had not heard of either SPF or DKIM before and I'm not sure of the significance of either of them. Jim On 16 Aug 2018 at 13:11, Shal Farley wrote:

Groups.io site updates
#changelog
Hi all,
This week's change log: Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change. BUGFIX: For groups without subgroups, you can now go toThis is handy as a short and easy to type URL when telling people about your group. In most browsers you don't even need to type the part when entering it into the address bar. And once you've used it a time or two your browser will likely auto-complete it for you as you type your group name. Slick! This also means that your group's subdomain is propagated into the DNS system soon after group creation. So when you later create your first subgroup you won't have a "dead time" when you can't get to your group, as some have reported here in GMF. NEW: Added a section to the Help about the FBL and people beingShort and to the point: /static/help#a-member-was-removed-because-of-spam We should update ours to cite it. /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Removed-for-spam NEW: When viewing a subgroup where you aren't subscribed, but you areExcellent. This might be why he widened the left column, but it may be worth it in terms of clarifying a somewhat mysterious behavior (primary group mods and owners automatically have mod or owner access in all subgroups). NEW: On the pending message screen, if you use the Approve &Joe reported a bug involving this function. If you get a confirmation dialog that is titled "Confirm Delete" - don't. It actually deletes the pending message instead of approving it. Use the "Approve" button instead of "Approve & Unmoderate Senders" for non-subscribers (at least until this bug is fixed). /g/GroupManagersForum/message/11180 CHANGE: Don't fig leaf email addresses when viewing source. This was a leftover of when members could use view source. I kind of miss that, but I understand why it may be too revealing, fig-leafs notwithstanding. I assume you are referring to the data backups maintained by groups.io for disaster recovery.? This is a question support would have to answer but it is highly unlikely.? The group's data would remain in the backup tapes/files as long as the backup copy is retained.? If you have concerns contact [email protected].
