Re: Group for blind managers

Hi,
In the short term, it may work; but in the long term, I can see it leading
to more fragmentation. Thus I would like to strongly oppose this idea. Even
if a supposed group is created, I plan not to join.
Cheers,
Joseph

Alan, I think it is a good idea. If nobody else besides Joseph is against
it, I will definitely create though group and post subscription info here
for those that choose to come over.

Which is best approach when new member wants to join a specific group?

Very few of the people wanting to join my group are handy with computers so I need to provide them with relatively simple instructions on how to join. I think I see two ways to join a group if the person does not already have a groups.io account.

I

When a new member wants to join a specific group and that group requires membership to be approved by moderators, which is the best process?

?

1. Create an account (sign up) with email and set a password; then go to the specific group and click ¡°Join This Group¡± button,

or

2. Go directly to the specific group and then click the ¡°Join This Group¡± button. This approach seems to kill two birds with one stone: the account is created and the group is joined. However, in this process, there does not seem to be a way to set the original password rather just a way to change a password.

How does the password actually get set in this approach? Does the new member enter a password and click on change this password since there is no ¡°set password¡± option?

?

I learnt by trial and error (in the completely different context of creating
repetitive HTML code), making considerable use of the Excel Help file. If you
want some tuition, I'm willing to help a little, but I suggest we take it off
this group and do it privately before Shal jumps on us for being off-topic. In
case you can't see my email address in the headers, it is ejf@...

Re: Group for blind managers

Al, Joseph, andy,

Lets see what some others that may chime in have to say.

I don't know how well screen readers cope with subject hashtags, but you could establish the hashtag #blind for topics that particularly relate to blind readers of GMF. That would make them easy to find through the Hashtags page, yet remain within GMF for the reasons Joseph cited.

If you want me to apply that hashtag (or some other) to this topic or past topics let me know in this thread or off-list. If there are other ways GMF can support your mission (Wiki pages?) let me know.

Re: Revised invite wording

Are you editing the custom message on the Invite page -or- on the Admin -> Settings -> Member Notices area?? (Notice Type = Invite)
If you are in the Member Notices area, is the Invite notice set as Active? (checkbox)

I just tried editing mine and get a blank page after clicking the Update button.
Time to email support.

No big deal, but what to do next?

I just tried this and it's not working for me, either.

There is something seriously wrong going on this morning with the server that handles member accounts.

With what appears to be an ongoing Invite problem, I'm reluctant to reply. But it's supposed to work like this:? Most of the wording in the invitation cannot be changed, but you can insert a custom message in the middle of it. Type what you want to say in the "Customize Message" box and it should be inserted into the "Invitation to Be Sent" box immediately above.

It's my understanding that much of the reason for the canned wording in both the Invite and Direct Add notices is because -- by law -- anyone added or invited to any [legitimate] group must be provided with a way to opt out.
?
Hope this helps,
Bruce

This might seem like a silly question but you are clicking on Update Group Profile once you have made the changes, aren't you...

My co-owner and I are getting this same message whenever we try to invite a new person to our group. I typed her address in the invite and I still get the message. We are not trying to upload a file or anything, just send an invite to one email address. Any other ideas? Thanks.

Hi,

As a blind owner myself, I understand the need for such a separate forum. However, given that it is possible to translate what sighted folks say to screen reading terms, I would vote that we unite our discussions on this group.

?

There are other benefits of using this group and translating what is ¡°shown on screen¡± to what ¡°we can hear¡±:

  1. Educational: one way to educate the public (at least a limited audience) is translating what folks say to our own terms, and let others see how we use assistive technologies to manage groups on Groups.IO. Also, by learning practices from sighted owners in regards to leadership and terminology, blind owners too can learn how we can interact with sighted peers not only on Groups.IO, but also on other forum management spaces.
  2. Mutual understanding: from my experiences and if I read stories from other owners correctly, it doesn¡¯t matter what kind of disability you have as long as you understand your responsibility as a group owner. One good analogy I can offer in this regard is how some political thoughts can transcend disability. Same way here: the ultimate qualification of being an effective leader of a group (or groups) is knowing who you are and how to take care of groups using whatever technology one is using, and this can be furthered by talking to other owners and establishing mutual understanding.

?

To those who have recently become owners of groups and don¡¯t know what a screen reader is: a screen reader is a software product that uses various techniques to read contents of a computer screen to blind computer users. These may involve using services offered by operating systems such as Microsoft Windows, or using standards developed by various organizations as guidance for reading and helping users interact with web services (the latter is the predominant case for Groups.IO website).

?

I believe some members of this forum are screen reader experts (I am an actual screen reader developer and a Windows Insider, so I can give you pointers on technical matters), so don¡¯t hesitate to contact us if you are interested in learning more about this.

Cheers,

Joseph

PGOffline provides a way to obtain a personal copy of the group for your own purposes. However, you cannot transfer your message archive to groups.io and reboot a dead group that way. PGOffline cannot export to mbox format, and Mark seems disinclined to import it even if there was.

I can't really blame him. There are plenty of unethical people out there who wouldn't mind stealing someone else's group, and he has no reliable way to filter import requests for that kind of thing. He doesn't need that kind of grief.

has anyone managed to transfer their message srchive without going through the normal process (quick search shows nothing).
Not that I am aware of. It seems that both?MailMan users and Y!G people who cannot get hold of a group Owner have been Direct Adding their subscriber lists as best they can and simply starting over.

Bruce?
