Re: Group for blind managers
Hello, I tend to agree with Joseph Lee on this point and here is the reason why. If there would be two separate groups there would be fragmentism with in the groups and the one wouldn't know what was happening in the other group hence there would be more clutter with getting emails from both groups.

The way it is now we can all work together for the good of all and we will all keep up with what is happening and we can have a blended group and everything can move along more smoothly and we can help Those who are not screen reader users understand that we are not out to sow discord among the members but we wish both sides to understand what the other side needs to maintain stability. I hope everyone understands what I am saying Here. -----Original Message-----

Re: Major issues in my group, spoofed or something internal in IO??? Help please.
Jim, Yahoo rejected all incoming email from USER@... of it didn't originate That level of filtering is done at Groups.io as well. In the case at hand the spoofed message had an "envelope-from" (the "mail from" provided at connection time in the SMTP protocol) that matched the domain that delivered the message. As such it would also have been accepted by Yahoo Groups also. However the header-from (the from field provided inside the message header) was spoofed to match the subscription address of the group's owner. This form of spoof is not rejected (by either service) because it is too often used legitimately by people who use email forwarding services. "I suspect this may be one for whoever runs <>Groups.io, but can they sort out their bulk email settings. Pretty much every time I get a digest from the <redacted> group I have to unbounce my account because their bulk email settings are dodgy and iCloud bounces it. What "bulk email settings?" Looks to me like iCloud is setting arbitrary standards. I'd be telling the affected member to contact iCloud about the problem. Perhaps the iCloud standards are due to the size of the digest as compared to the device receiving the digest. I'd personally call a 100 kb email received on my iPhone rather unworkable... perhaps iCloud not only agrees, but also forces that interpretation on its users who are using mobile devices. Jim H |

Exactly. This problem may go away as IPv6 gains traction, but for now it is usually the case that entire households, corporate departments, hotels, dormitories, libraries, and in some places /cities/ sit behind a single IP address assigned to their shared router. Or the entire customer base of an ISP sits behind the IP address of a single (or moderate number of) outbound SMTP server(s)... the latter being the thing that actually connects to groups.io to deliver mail and thus is the IP address that groups.io sees as delivery is attempted. The IP address of the poster is down in the headers and isn't seen by Groups.io until after the message has been accepted... at which point some post-acceptance filtering of the headers would be required to zap just that one sender. Yahoo rejected all incoming email from USER@... of it didn't originate from domain.com. Spoofing - rare to begin with - went to zero for my groups when that was implemented. Jim H |
Re: Which is best approach when new member wants to join a specific group?
Don, When a new member wants to join a specific group and that group requires membership to be approved by moderators, which is the best process? Possibly more important than whether or not group membership is restricted, is whether the members will likely want or need access to the group's web features. If not, a path by way of Direct Add, Invite, or the +subscribe email command will likely prove simplest for them.
If the group's membership is restricted (moderator approval required) then the button will be labeled "Apply For Membership In This Group". That nit-pick aside...
This is what I would suggest, assuming the member is likely to want or need access to the group's web features.
Po-tay-toh, po-tah-toh. If the person has not previously had a Groups.io account, or has not set a password in their account, then they could "change" their password from nothing to something. Notably, setting a password is not required for web access as a Groups.io group member. The member can use the "Email me a link to log in" button instead, and never bother to have a password. The Delete Password button actually does what it says, and thereafter the member can either use an emailed link to log in, or can use the "Forgot your password, or don't have one yet?" link to set a new password. Which is best approach when new member wants to join a specific group?
Very few of the people wanting to join my group are handy with computers so I need to provide them with relatively simple instructions on how to join. I think I see two ways to join a group if the person does not already have a groups.io account. I When a new member wants to join a specific group and that group requires membership to be approved by moderators, which is the best process? ? 1. Create an account (sign up) with email and set a password; then go to the specific group and click ¡°Join This Group¡± button, or 2. Go directly to the specific group and then click the ¡°Join This Group¡± button. This approach seems to kill two birds with one stone: the account is created and the group is joined. However, in this process, there does not seem to be a way to set the original password rather just a way to change a password. How does the password actually get set in this approach? Does the new member enter a password and click on change this password since there is no ¡°set password¡± option? ? Don |

Re: Group for blind managers
Al, Joseph, andy,
I don't know how well screen readers cope with subject hashtags, but you could establish the hashtag #blind for topics that particularly relate to blind readers of GMF. That would make them easy to find through the Hashtags page, yet remain within GMF for the reasons Joseph cited. If you want me to apply that hashtag (or some other) to this topic or past topics let me know in this thread or off-list. If there are other ways GMF can support your mission (Wiki pages?) let me know.
