No, I don't think you have.

Let's have a look at a "notification message"; it will contain a link that takes the user straight to the file in question. Now my preferred option is to use Groups.io via the web UI so all I need is one "click" and the file in question downloads; I read it and then close it.

The same notification is sent by email to those using email access, and it will contain the same link. However, it will require that those wishing to read the file to be logged in to see it.

Is that really too much to expect? Messaging using Groups.io does not require prior log - in, and that's fine, but quite a few of the available functions do require users to be logged in to use them; you have identified Files, but the same "restriction" applies to Photos, Databases, Calendars, and very likely most wiki sections.

Is you query about downloading, or does it really relate to the need to be logged in?

I sometimes wonder if those who find needing to be logged in to be too much trouble take the same view when it comes to using Amazon, ebay and the like.

Groups.io in French?

I haven't been able to find any way to make my group's groups.io text appear in French.? Am I missing something?? Is it in the planning?? If not, this is a vote in favor of such a change.

Rejected emails

On August 6th an internet service provider named Windstream has blocked all emails from our groups. IO site to their email users. I am attempting to contact Windstream to see if I can remove the block. Error message was
550 5.7.1 [C10] RBL restriction: Blacklisted by Internal Reputation Service - 66.175.222.12

Has anyone else seen similar actions around that date?

Re: How to stop receiving your own email posting?

Shal,
Thanks for your interest in my issue.

What was happening is this:

When I am the OP on a message, Gmail doesn't show it in my message thread until someone replies to it.

When I reply, via Gmail, to a message in an established thread, Gmail shows my reply message (also in the Sent folder) as part of the thread. When I had the "Send me a copy of my posts" option clicked, I would see my Sent message as part of the thread AND immediately following that, I would see the GIO message sent out as my copy of the post.

My experience is that Gmail doesn't show my emails in my inbox UNLESS they're part of an ongoing thread that Gmail can link together via replies and Subject lines. Once there is a sent and replied thread going, everything in the thread has the same label (or is in the same folder, but it's Gmail so they use labels).

Does that makes sense?

Re: Sign -up form

Shal- Correct I am using the form code from the promote page. It only captures the email address, then when the person receives the email all they do is confirm the email, so you get a member added with no name? I will send a suggestion box. Do I need to join that group first? --Sandra

Assuming you're working with the code from the Promote page, no, it doesn't appear that there is. Just the email address.

Though I wouldn't be surprised to find that somewhere in the process Groups.io would collect the user's name from an email confirmation or login page or some such.

That sounds like a good idea to drop into the "suggestion box" (the beta group).

Re: Emails held for monitoring.

No, it's strange. I've been active in this group for some six months and have sent at least a hundred emails. Maybe twice that. I'm a moderator for the group. But this week, some of my emails hand up needing moderator approval. But some don't hang up. It makes no sense. I or another monitor has to go in and approve my email. I thought the problem might be my phone number. After removing it, my emails didn't hang up. But then after a dozen emails or so, one hung up again. I can't figure out what's going on.

Is there a way to browse file content without downloading?

We have officer reports that are uploaded to a subgroup every other month. The membership needs to be able to view the content of those files, but there is really no need to actually download them as they are only for information.? Also, the members get an email about a new file being uploaded but then have to go to the website to actually access the file (which then has to be downloaded).?

Have I missed a feature that simplifies this process?? Currently we are uploading the file which triggers the email, but then we are sending a manual topic email with the contents of the file in it so that members can see the content without downloading.? ?Most of the files are either PDF files if that helps.
Thanks
Beth

Your appreciation is, er, appreciated. :)

I realised when bleary - eyed this morning, and pouring tea down my throat in an attempt to rejoin the human race that I had not included a note about "don't forget to click "Update Group", so I have added that as well.

The vacant "What the User Sees" heading may take some time, as I cannot readily access all the various options; I may put out a plea for help with that.

Your relocation of the two wiki pages is a good idea; I will put together some suggestions about Long - term Files & Photo Management (i.e. deletion of duplicates / near duplicates, editing folder / album titles and so on, including a suggestion about indexing Photo Albums) once the correct round tuit can be located.

Re: Files Question

Chris, Bruce,

Now you can go and look for it. It got up to 22 Revisions in
preparation, and I have uploaded it to the GMF wiki Web Features
list as Management of Attachments, Photos and Files.
Bravo gentlemen!

Those two pages are fantastic, thank you!

On the home page I moved the links to them under Best Practices for Group Management, since their content is mostly relevant to group mods and owners.

Re: Members able to make attachments via email but not on the website

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Maureen,

Members who try to attach?a photo when posting on the website cannot get it to work.? Is this a bug or are we doing something wrong or ???

Seems to work for me. I just tested using the paperclip icon (second from the right, below) in the toolbar to choose an image file and it attached to the message I sent (in my test group).

When they say they "can't get it to work", can you get any more detail on what they've tried and what happens?

True.

I try to make a habit of starting the subject with "Offlist -- " when I send messages to members like that.

If I'm in the pending list and asking about a pending message I'll usually put "Pending Message -- " in front of the message subject.

Re: Messages delivered to group, but not e-mailed to me

Ken,

Thank you. I contacted Microsoft support and this is their reply.
Sounds like the problem has been resolved, for now:

To help us resolve the issue, it would be best if liquidity@[redacted]
will be added to Outlook.com Whitelist.
Heh. Although it may help you in the future to know about the Whitelist, this rep clearly didn't understand that you are dealing with a mailing list - whitelisting every member is not a practical approach.

Our Outlook.com Deliverability Support can help the sender prevent
this issue by asking them to send the necessary information to our
sender support team to be added on our Whitelists. We will need their
cooperation to ensure that their business will reach all users of
Outlook.com.
Yeah, Mark has been dealing with Microsoft off and on for quite a while now. It doesn't seem like they are willing or able to keep deliveries from Groups.io flowing.

Re: Member directory

Annick,

I have made my member list available to my members now. So now I will
explain to all of them the difference.
Keep in mind that the group's Members list includes email addresses and other subscription info. Depending on the nature of your group that may or may not be appropriate. For example, I don't think I would ever open the Members list on a group with Open membership.

The Directory only includes links to the members' profile (as Bruce described) and the profile only includes information that the member chose to put into it.

Re: Why can't members Edit Topic (was beta - Suggestion)

Chris,

In beta@ you wrote:

One of our members pointed out that groups.io will let you edit posts,
but not Topic titles. Not sure if this is a feature or a bug, but it
would be great for the member who fat-keyed a New Topic title or,
worse yet had it mangled by autocorrect, to fix it.

Some folks replied that modifying the subject text of a topic is a moderator's job, not a member's. But they didn't say why.

The reason is that there's a lot of functionality in Groups.io that is tied to a "Topic" rather than an individual message. Things like following or muting a topic, the special features that can be attached to hashtags, and of course the "Topics" view of the Messages.

To first approximation, a "Topic" is a collection of messages which share a common Subject text. It's more complicated than that, but set the complications aside for a moment.

So what happens is that if someone edits the posted topic's Subject text and then a reply arrives later by email, the reply will carry the original Subject text, which no longer matches the edited subject, and that reply will start a new Topic rather than matching up with the earlier post as it should.

Moderators have tools to fix this (topic merge, and the ability to correct the subject text while the reply is pending), so they are given the ability to edit a Topic's subject text. But it is an action that should be used sparingly because it can cause these follow-on effects with email replies.

Okay, thank you. This is much appreciated. I think that's, look confusing to some people. Especially it somebody sends a message to the owners address and somebody like myself replies back with using the owners email as I do. I don't want them to think that day got that reply sent to the group. Somebody could think this, if in they don't check the headers closely.

It isn't exactly the same as the normal group footers, but it appears to be normal - at least I'm seeing it going back to February of 2017.

A key distinction is that it is From the group's +owner address, which no normal posting would be. It is also To the member's email address, where normal postings are To the group's address (even in the copy delivered to members).

Re: How to stop receiving your own email posting?

Gary,

It turns out that I was getting my Gmail copy of my sent message ALONG
WITH the copy sent by GIO, so each reply I sent was showing up twice
in the threads to which I was replying.

I unchecked that setting, and now I'm getting nothing (initially) on
my own posts and only the Gmail "Sent" copy in my Gmail threads.
Do you perchance have a filter set in Gmail to move messages to your inbox when they have the group's tag in the subject?

That's the only reason I can think of for this difference in behavior: a reply would have that tag where initial posts from you would not.
