Re: Sidebar - Gmail dotted email addresses

I would suggest that this is all down to the question: 'When is an e-mail address not an e-mail address?' Answer: 'When it's an id.'

AIUI Google is following the standards - any e-mail sent to an ~@gmail address goes to them, they are sending it to the correct mail box (that they have provided) for that e-mail address - and they are, as is their right under the standard, ignoring any dots in the 'pre-@' part the address (which is purely their business). So ab@gmail.~ and a.b@gmail.~ are both valid addresses for the same destination - and if an e-mail is sent to both, the destination mail box will (or at least should) get two e-mails. But anything using an e-mail address as an id isn't bound by, or using, e-mail standards - typically I think they just check it has an @ in the middle, without worrying about anybodyelse's rules that may (or may not) comply with the standard.

And this discrepancy - that if your e-mail address is ab@~ , and somebody can use a.b@~ as 'their' id (but which is your email), then it is a security loophole: see (and other responses to googling 'google email netflix security fail' )?

So I think in Ellen's case the problem may actually be fraud... (and one that, from what she said, Apple are aware of)

Moral: if you have a gmail address, be aware, and be suspicious of any (money related in particular) e-mails that unexpectedly arrive, addressed to a wrongly dotted version of it. (But note that, as it is 'your' address, you can always go and get the password reset)

Moral 2: if somebody's signing up to your service with an e-mail as id, do your best to ensure it is theirs...

Re: True permalink for photos? #suggestion

Okay, thanks both. Tagged as a suggestion, but if not dealt with from the historical thread, I guess not a priority. It does make the usefulness of a photo url questionable to anything other than the groups.io album functionality. Oh well, {sigh} ;-)

Re: How to move Active (but apparently abandoned by unresponsive group owner) Yahoo Groups???

I suspect, as Shal says, you aren't going to be able to "port over" using the easy-transfer method.? Reality sucks sometimes.? What you can do (IF you can look at the member list of the inactive yahoo list) is download the membership roster in .csv format, then "invite" all of them individually to join a mirror list on groups.io.? You won't be able to move the message history over but you can download the photos and files to your own computer and then upload them to the new list.? Lot of trouble, but it will depend on how significant the photos/files are as to whether it's worth the time and trouble.??

I've been trying to warn some of my friends about the vagaries of yahoogroups recently, and most of them are either ignoring me or pooh-poohing me.? At some point, they too will find that their lists aren't functional (as I did) or useful because of unresponsiveness in the tech support area, so I guess some folks just have to learn the hard way.

Bill?

All of our posts have date stamps visible by default.? Hovering over that date shows the time-date stamp.

If someone does join (twice) with two separate emails addresses there may be a way to merge two accounts into one, but I have not needed to do that with my group so have not looked for that.

Will that prevent them from joining
with the other email account?
Probably not, though you should be able to block an email address or at least set it so that it cannot post.

Re: Turn off "New Member" emails to moderators #membership #announcement

Disregard. The solution my moderator was looking for was in the notification.

Re: Turn off "New Member" emails to moderators #membership #announcement

I see how you can do it one moderator at a time, but not a group wide setting. In Subscription, there is a group of checkboxes. See attached photo. Be sure to save.?

Turn off "New Member" emails to moderators #membership #announcement

I've got a group, which has multiple subgroups, and our board moderators are over all of the groups.? There are a LOT of "new member" notifications coming in to all of our moderators.? Is there a way to turn those notifications to the moderators off?

well, when I was doing email for a living, Roadrunner was always one of the domains that created unnecessary drama in trying to get email to subscribers, and their admins were always attitudinal that it was never their fault. Nice to see nothing's changed.?

Yep ... I get anyone's mail who tries to use the miz.elly addy without a dot. I was told it was because I had the addy first (with the dot) Yahoo knows about this now and they don't seem to be inclined to change anything about the dot issue.

Ken,

Well I don't want to start trading insults, but I am somewhat dismayed
by the cavalier attitude to standards being displayed by some
participants of this thread.
I've cited the relevant standard. If you think there is some standard
being subverted, please cite it.

there has most certainly been a problem with the use or not of a dot
in the user part of the email address (i.e. before the @).
In Merle's case the dot was a factor. The two different spellings of
Merle's Gmail address (with and without dot) were entered into Groups.io
which created two separate accounts for them. Merle was ultimately able
to resolve the issue by logging in using the alternate spelling and
making corrections.

In Ellen's case the problem was a typo. The dot was not a factor because
the same result would have occurred with or without it.

Under the drop down list under Admin, select Upgrade.? The page that opens will have a summary of your storage usage.? Click the "View/Change Plan" button on the right.? The "Transfer Plan" is the 3rd one down the list of options.? Select "Upgrade" on the right of that and set it up.

Re: How to move Active (but apparently abandoned by unresponsive group owner) Yahoo Groups???

George,

Is there a way to port those groups over to groups.io even though I am
not a group owner?
To use the easy group transfer mechanism you must be at least a moderator of the group with these two privileges:

Invite and add members
Add, remove, and change moderator privileges

Some of these groups have been active for close to 20 years and I
would hate to lose the collection of stored information in them.
You can use PG Offline to make a personal copy to your computer.

How to move Active (but apparently abandoned by unresponsive group owner) Yahoo Groups???

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I belong to several active Yahoo Groups, one of which was recently ported over to groups.io.

I had emailed the owners of those remaining active groups about moving their groups off of Yahoo, only to be ignored or receive no response from them.

Now, a few of the other Yahoo groups have suddenly disappeared, and only 4 of my other subscribed groups remain.

Is there a way to port those groups over to groups.io even though I am not a group owner?? Some of these groups have been active for close to 20 years and I would hate to lose the collection of stored information in them.

Thanks!

Under the admin menu, in the Invitations screen, there's a button to show Sent Invitations.? I like to keep track of who I've got outstanding invitations to via this list.? Is it okay to remove members from this list, once they've accepted?? I want to keep the list short, but I don't want to impact anyone's membership by dropping them from this list.

Also, some members have multiple email addresses.? I'd like to have them accept with only one and then drop the others.? Will that prevent them from joining with the other email account?? I'll likely have to discuss how our board wants to handle this, but it would help a lot if I could take them some answers to questions I am certain they will ask.

Thanks.
