Limit to number of messages transferred from Yahoo Groups?

I have a Yahoo group going since 2007, probably about 30,000 messages, most of them without attachments.? Is it feasible for the groups.io folks to transfer these to a new groups.io group?? Any sense of how much storage space that would require, for example greater than one GB?

Thank you
Peter

Re: Not getting calendar reminders

Shawn,

It is showing up in the calendar at the correct time, there is simply
no reminder in email or in the messages list.
I'm out of ideas.

Note that I am having the exact same problem in 2 different groups.
If you want to try for three you can set one up identically in my test group, maybe that way we can spot what's different.

Re: graphics files

Claire,

Can I add .tif and .png files? Is there someplace that has guidelines
for what types of files can be uploaded?
I'm not aware of any restrictions on the types of files that can be uploaded to the group's Photos or Files sections.

In Photos .png files definitely work, but .tif is a very flexible format so while the file will likely upload, it may not be viewable without downloading.

Sandra,

The Spectrum tech:

1) Is lying thru his/her teeth
or
2) Was too lazy to check to see if the problem really exists.
or
3) Checked for a block ONLY on [email protected] rather than everything from Groups.io.

The tech I called confirmed a system wide issue. The issue is with Spectrum, not with Groups.io. In short, Spectrum is being stupid.

So 72 members of my group are getting bounced and not receiving or able to send a message to this group. I really do not want to move back to yahoogroups but it worked until I moved here.

Re: bounced emails

Sandra,

So I just spent an hour on the phone with spectrum () who tells me they are not blocking [email protected].???

?It is technically true that they are not blocking , they're delaying messages instead (greylisting, as mentioned to Jim).?

Perhaps more pertinently, while the Sender (envelope-from) is Groups.io, the From address (header-from) of those messages are (for the most part) that of the posting member. That may be a factor, it has been known to cause some Microsoft-based services to outright reject messages from Groups.io (especially when the message is being returned to the member who posted it).

So 72 members of my group are getting bounced and not receiving or able to send a message to this group.? I really do not want to move back to yahoogroups?? but it worked until I moved here.

?You have to do what's in the best interests of your group, of course. I would recommend giving the situation a few more days to see if Mark can resolve it. I'd probably also be telling the affected members that perhaps they would enjoy using a more reliable email service.

I know that may sound snarky or glib, but it is based in personal experience. Years ago I had this same problem (greylisting) with Verizon as my email service delaying messages from Yahoo Groups. Sometimes the delay would be long enough that Y!Groups would count the message as bounced and I'd never get it. As a mod for several groups I found this intolerable and switched email services. Ultimately I fired Verizon as my ISP as well, giving my business to a competitor with faster speeds, lower prices, and (at that time) no shenanigans with my inbound email.

Re: bounced emails

Jim,

They told me Groups.io needed to call them and request removal of the block/delay and I sent the number to do that to Mark via the "Support" email address.

?Good, I hope that helps.
?
That business of delaying and creating a big backlog that's finally accepted doesn't make much sense to me, but that's what RR/Spectrum are doing.

?It is a (dubious in my opinion) anti-spam technique called greylisting. The theory is that spambots won't retry.?

It may be fine when you're service is receiving scattershot spam from all over the place. But if you can identify a bulk sender, such as a mailing list service, it makes no sense to me to increase the workload on your servers and theirs, and decrease the satisfaction of your mutual customers, by continuing to defer their messages. Either block the service outright or pass it.

I think it's a case of Google and Yahoogroups are "too big to block" and Groups.io isn't... yet.

?Indeed. I suppose Groups.io does not yet represent enough traffic into their service to be concerned about the extra load. And if it means a few hundred users decide to switch to one of their competitors, eh, no big deal.

Just in case it wasn't you that reported this to support, apparently the problem with those particular email services is affecting many Groups.io users.

Mark is asking that users of those services complain to their service directly, he's been unable to reach those services himself.

Re: bounced emails

Jim Higgins

I was probably the first to contact Groups.io support because a pending subscription notice wasn't received at home. It was several days old when I found it via the web.

Not sure where most of the problem is, but @sc.rr.com is affected and the RR/Spectrum tech I spoke with suggested it was system-wide.

It would probably be good for folks to call RR/Spectrum (877) 566-4892 if for no other reason than to get their attention about doing something stupid. If "too much mail" is causing them a problem they need to upgrade their servers.

They told me Groups.io needed to call them and request removal of the block/delay and I sent the number to do that to Mark via the "Support" email address.

Meanwhile, we should be getting the mail in question, but it's probably going to come in in big batches because they're delaying the mail by telling Groups.io to try again later, then finally accepting the backlog later. That business of delaying and creating a big backlog that's finally accepted doesn't make much sense to me, but that's what RR/Spectrum are doing.

I think it's a case of Google and Yahoogroups are "too big to block" and Groups.io isn't... yet.

Re: Couple Of Questions, Email And Something Else

Jeff,

I don't want to turn of notifications of new member nor when another first post needs approval.? If I disable the daily notifications will it stop those notices ?

No.

The Email Delivery choices only refer to normal group postings. Scroll down to the bottom of your Subscription page to see the checkboxes for Notifications and the options for Owner Email.

My other question is, from what I've seen, groups.io is not in any way limited to electronics. some would like to discuss some politics, food or whatever else.

Correct.

As a group owner you decide what content is suitable for your group. Some of my groups are very tightly focused (my PTA group), others we talk about nearly anything (my classmate group).?

So it isn't surprising that in Groups.io's directory you'll find groups on all sorts of topics:
/search

I mean except maybe how to overthrow the government or something like that, which I would never do. (we keep quiet about such things lol) I wouldn't do anything even slightly illegal here.

Best not:

Re: Dividing Access with a Group #howto #subgroups #split

Andrew,

Our company has subscribers and then we have people who are interested in subscribing. For the people who are interested in subscribing, I don't want them to see all the subscriber messages, but if they do post, I'd like for subscribers to be able to respond. So, in the end, I want them to participate, just not have access to all of the subscriber conversations.

?I think the only way to have them unable to use the Messages page to read messages is to not subscribe them to the group. Then you can check Allow Non Subscribers to Post in the Message Policies section of your group's Settings page. This will force moderation on all of their postings, a necessary precaution to keep out spam from non-subscribers.

Then you would also want to select Sender or Group and Sender in the Reply To control so that member replies go back to them. Unfortunately that will also affect members' replies to each other. I don't see a way around that.

The other option, if it would be acceptable for these "type 2" subscribers to see each other's messages, would be to include them in the primary group, but not in a subgroup devoted to the type 1 subscribers. The type 1 subscribers could converse privately in the subgroup, and the type 1 subscribers could answer type 2 posts in the primary group.

That would be a little like the "member" versus "board" structure I have in my PTA group, where all PTA members are members of the primary group, but only the elected board members are members of the "board" subgroup.

Couple Of Questions, Email And Something Else

I own a group. Now instead of constant emails I get a daily summary. Well I come here every day and check the groups I am in. I don't really need the email every day so I am thinking of turning it off. I don't want to turn of notifications of new member nor when another first post needs approval.? If I disable the daily notifications will it stop those notices ? They are really not a big problem, I just like to keep my inbox clean. So if I disable the daily mail, do I disable the notifications I should get as the owner ?

My other question is, from what I've seen, groups.io is not in any way limited to electronics. some would like to discuss some politics, food or whatever else. Anything aboout politics would of course have strict rules and have to be tightly moderated, but am I right in assuming that any topic is OK ? I mean except maybe how to overthrow the government or something like that, which I would never do. (we keep quiet about such things lol) I wouldn't do anything even slightly illegal here.

So, those are my questions de jure.

Thanks for your time.

We? also have calendar reminders and info blasts that go out periodfically, some every month, others every two weeks.
Our Board of Directors' meeting reminder also get sent this way.

Re: Not getting calendar reminders

I use calendar all the time and have no problems.
I set up for meetings out a 3 months out and include notices that happen every week for the last five weeks before the meeting and also on the day of the meeting.
It's a bit complex to get them right but there is not problem with that function.
One reason you might get screwed up is if you don't set the proper time zone within the calendar notice

BTW I tend to reuse my old event, resetting the dates, etc so that I don't have to screw around each time.

You don't need to do anything special in your group settings to have some people use Following Only. But if you know that you are about to Direct Add or Invite a bunch of people who should have that setting, you can preset it for them on the Default Sub Settings tab of ?your group's Settings page. You may or may not want to leave that default in place normally.

I have a group that has two types of users:
1. People who should receive all messages
2. People who can't receive all messages, but can message and receive feedback from the entire group.

Does anyone have some suggestions on how to organize my group this way? Subgroups is not an option as they are still able to see all messages.
