Re: Dividing Access with a Group #howto #subgroups #split

Andrew,

2. People who can't receive all messages, but can message and receive feedback from the entire group.

?I don't know what you mean by "can't", but it sounds like these people would benefit from Following Only? in the Advanced Preferences section of their Subscription page.

Does anyone have some suggestions on how to organize my group this way?

You don't need to do anything special in your group settings to have some people use Following Only. But if you know that you are about to Direct Add or Invite a bunch of people who should have that setting, you can preset it for them on the Default Sub Settings tab of ?your group's Settings page. You may or may not want to leave that default in place normally.

?You can ?change existing members to use that setting, but only one at a time through their Membership page in the group's Members list.

Or you can just tell them about the feature and let them adjust their own subscriptions, but they will have to log in to the site to set the Advanced Preferences.

Re: Not getting calendar reminders

Shawn,

They are not being filtered or showing up in spam, or any other of the tabs. They are not in All Mail, Deleted Items, or Spam.

?I think it is unlikely, with Gmail, but did you check to see if they were rejected?
?

I don¡¯t see how it contradicts. Sometimes it sends them, sometimes it doesn¡¯t.

?If you're saying that they post to the group and arrive by email sometimes, but sometimes do neither that's different than what I was thinking. I thought you were saying that they never appeared in the group's Messages list, but did sometimes arrive by email.
?

They are not in my email client(s) and not on the messages list this week, though it was there 2 weeks ago (it repeats every 2 weeks)

?.

?Ok, then the crucial question is whether the event is in fact repeating every two weeks. If so it should appear on the calendar this week as well as two weeks ago, and two weeks from now, etc. As it happens I have one set up like that in my test group:
?

?If yours is set up similarly, and does appear in the calendar every two weeks, then I don't see why its reminders shouldn't post every two weeks.

A long shot would be to check the #cal-reminder entry in your group's Hashtag list, and make sure it does not have the No Email box checked. But even if that were checked, the reminder should be posted in the group's Messages page.
?Too, that should have prevented the two-weeks ago reminders from emailing also, unless the hashtag was changed sometime in between.

Dividing Access with a Group #howto #subgroups #split

Andrew Utt

I have a group that has two types of users:
1. People who should receive all messages
2. People who can't receive all messages, but can message and receive feedback from the entire group.

Does anyone have some suggestions on how to organize my group this way? Subgroups is not an option as they are still able to see all messages.

One thing you haven't told us is whether this is a new condition, prior to which you were able to set Calendar Events, or whether this problem has always existed.

I suggest that you log in (make sure that you do so as an Owner, not a Member!) and then go to Settings. Scroll down to Features... Calendar and make sure that it is set to Subscribers can view, Moderators can edit and NOT Calendar is disabled.

AOL mobile app ignores reply-to

Just ran into this problem and thought I'd share with the group.
One of my members uses the AOL email app on his iPhone.? He did a reply to a post and it was emailed to the sender (fortunately happened to be me), not the group.
Turns out there is a reported bug in the AOL mobile apps that ignores the reply-to field in email headers.? Only happens if you use the app, works correctly using the AOL mail web site.
See this article that I found ->?

The groups.io website.?

It sends them sometimes.

?You mean that sometimes you receive the reminders in your email? See my prior message about checking your email delivery.

It did not post them to either of the affected groups.

?If the reminders do not appear in the Messages list of the group's web pages then they would not have been sent out by email either.? So that contradicts what you said about it sending them sometimes.

I think you'll need to be a lot more specific about what you tried, what you observed, and where you observed it before I'll be able to give you useful advice. A screen shot of the Reminders section of the event's edit page might be very informative. It ought to look something like this:

?

You might have more than one reminder for a given event, and would likely send one more than five minutes in advance, but that's just an example.

Here are snippets from mine.

I was posting to the thread that smoky_stu started (unable to create a calendar event at all).

The answer to your question, though, is no...scheduled reminders should go out whether you're logged in or not.

Sorry that I didn't quote enough of the context.?

Shawn,

I have calendar reminders set up for some meetings in two different groups, and they appear to be sent unreliably.

?

?If you haven't already, double-check a few things?:

  • Did the reminders post to the group's Messages list?
  • Did your email service divert them to your Spam or other folder?
  • Did your email service reject them?

If the reminders didn't post to the group's page that's definitely a red flag. Either you haven't set up the reminders the way you think you have, or there's some kind of glitch.

?

Gmail doesn't too often goof on spam detection, but just in case if you don't see the Spam folder in the list on the left (below Inbox, Sent Mail and Drafts) then drop the More menu. Gmail has an option to have the link to the Spam folder always visible, but I think the default is to tuck it away under More.

?

Also with Gmail there's the tabbed Inbox. It is possible that the reminders were delivered to Social, Promotions, or one of the other configurable tabs.

?

For rejections go to the Subscription page in the groups in question. Click on the Email Delivery History tab there and see if the reminders are listed as recent bounces.

?

Where do I post a report about this?

?

Failing the above, [email protected]

The footer at the bottom of each message will show you the subscribed
email address to which that message was sent. Next to the Unsubscribe link.

That can fool you if you have an email address set up to forward
messages to another. Double-check that group's Members list for the two
addresses found in the message footer instead.

That same message needs to be sent out to the group on the 15th of each month, but not necessarily as a 'Special Notice'.
Is it my imagination or does this query arise fairly regularly? Perhaps one solution would be to ask on beta for a second (or even third) "Member Notice" to be made available to Owners / Moderators, to be sent out on a fixed but selectable date every month.

It is not something we would seem to require on the Group I moderate, so I feel that any such suggestion should come from a Group Owner or Moderator who does see the need; apart from anything else having been involved in a small refinement of the proposed revamped "Topics" page I don't want to push my luck with Mark!

Re: How to send a Member Notice . . .

Thanks Shal for your response, but I guess I was not specific enough about what I need to do.

Sorry to seem so dense about this but, what if the message is for my entire group instead of for only a few selected members? I looked and do see what you memtioned about choosing member(s) & using the dropdown menu for sending a message.

But the message in point is one of those which is already saved at Admin > Settings > Member Notices.

But from there the only options are, to edit it, to delete it, or to make it active so that it will go out to the group on the 1st of the month. There is no option for sending it at any other time of the month.

So all I can figure to do is to copy the Subject line and the message text into a blank email and send it to my group's Post Message email address, manually each month on the desired date. That is what I did yesterday and the message was posted to the group.

(And I could not figure out a way to use the Calendar for doing this, but I'll snoop around that some more.)

Sandra,

Most of the problem emails are @triad.rr.com the others seem to be
@abusinessname
Just in case it wasn't you that reported this to support, apparently the problem with those particular email services is affecting many Groups.io users.

Mark is asking that users of those services complain to their service directly, he's been unable to reach those services himself.

Re: Creating calendar events #calendar #groupowner

smoky_stu,

I created this group which for all intents and purposes makes me the
group owner,
Only when logged in using the same address you used when creating the group. If you've used more than one address at Groups.io, the system thinks that each is a different person.

...but it won't let me create an event in the calendar area, says I
don't have permissions to do that. What the heck is going on?
If you can see the calendar but cannot add an event, then I think you must be logged in as a member of the group, not its owner or a moderator. Or possibly you are not logged in at all, if the group's calendar is set to public view.

As a confirmation, can you see and use the Admin button in the left column? It should be under Subscription and above Messages.
