time zone question
Hi! My first large group just transferred to groups.io (yay!) and I got a question today about time zones. I know that there has been a discussion of this, but I am not clear on what exactly is being said, because there is a reference to "default sub settings" which I do not have. On the calendar page, it has the correct time zone. I am seeing the correct time zone on the messages I receive, but one person (so far) sent me an email saying the time zone was wrong. I read that this is a user account setting, but what if the user does not have an account because they just read the emails and do not want the web functionality? does that mean they have no control over the time zone? Thanks for any help! Patti |

Re: Freedom of speech
Bill, I default my groups to MODERATED, period.? As owner, I have the ability to unmoderate anyone in the group on a selective basis. ?If you're going to have an appreciable fraction of the members unmoderated I would suggest a different approach. In the Spam Control section Leave the group's Moderated box normally unchecked, and use New Users Moderated instead. That way when people join they start off with the moderation override, and you can choose to leave them that way indefinitely. But for those you choose to unmoderate, set them to Default group policy, rather than Override: not moderated. That way you retain the ability to control the (normally) unmoderated members all at once by changing the group's Moderated checkbox and not have to go and individually re-moderate people in the event of a disruption in the group. ? ?Shal? -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |

Re: my own messages
?psb b, Any hints, tips or clues? ? ?Go to your Subscription ?page in that group and click on the Email Delivery History tab. See if the Recent Bounces box includes any of your postings - that would tell you if your email service rejected those messages for some reason. Some email services have been known to reject messages coming back to you that claim to be from you, on the basis that they were delivered by some other email service. Yahoo Mail though, does not have a history of doing that, that I know of. It is possible that they're taking the lesser step of diverting your messages to your Spam folder, again because messages from you - to you have been commonly associated with spam. Michael's suggestion will likely not help. That account checkbox controls a work-around that, so far as I know, is only needed for Gmail users (possibly including private or company domains powered by Gmail). But again, not Yahoo Mail. Re: Approvals of NEW members
Is it possible to automatically approve new members to a group -Yes, but there has to be some email interaction either: A) Prospective member sends an email to: <groupname>[email protected] or B) If they join via the web: Clicking on ¡°+Join This Group¡± at groups.io/g/<groupname>, Entering their email address, And clicking on ¡°Confirm Email Address¡±; The prospective member will have to reply to a ¡°Confirm Email Address¡± email. 2) but WITH the "first two messages are moderated" still in force.Yes, go to your group (and if you have the appropriate Owner/Moderator permissions) Admin: Settings: Spam Control: Uncheck the box for: "Restricted Membership" Check the box for: "New Users Moderated" Unmoderate After: set number of 'appoved posts' Click on "Update Group¡± |
Re: Approvals of NEW members
Hi again,
? I solved my personal issue/question - all (?) I had to do was to scroll further down the Subscription page - it was there all the time. ? I am not the owner of this group so I don't know whether or not the group can be set up to automatically approve new members - BUT leave the "first 2 messages require approval (are moderated)" status.?? ? I've left that for the group owner to sort out. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? - Jim B. |
Re: Approvals of NEW members
If the only box checked in the Spam Control area of the Settings page is New User Moderated (and set for 2), then anyone that applies to the group becomes a member immediately, but the first 2 posts will be moderated.? You may not have the permissions needed to see or change it.

Approvals of NEW members
Hi,
? Is it possible to automatically approve new members to a group -? ? 1) without any email/action required for membership approval ? 2) but WITH the "first two messages are moderated" still in force. ? Re: Freedom of speech
Put them into moderated mode for two weeks and give them a fair warning that if they ever do it again they will be banned from the group. I stated earlier send them a link to the terms and conditions of the use of the group and tell them that if they fail to meet these requirements they will no longer be members of the group I think this is stating the obvious but you need to take a zero tolerance for people who have used the system. By setting a president on how such abuse is treated it will prevent other misuse going forward On Fri, Jul 13, 2018, 12:20 PM Bill Hickey <wa3h@...> wrote: I have had groups of one sort or another for probably 30+ years.? Re: my own messages
I'm not receiving my own messages from my group. I've posted a "good morning" and a "this is a test" and have not received either in my yahoo inbox. At Groups.io use the drop down menu after your name in the upper right and select: Account: Preferences: My Posts Check the box for: "I always want copies of my own messages" Click on "Update Preferences" However some Email Providers (on their own) might still not display your own posts. |
my own messages
Sorry to be a pain if this has already been addressed, but...
I'm not receiving my own messages from my group. ?I've posted a "good morning" and a "this is a test" and have not received either in my yahoo inbox. Yes, I've received the responses from other members, and others members unrelated posts. Yes, I've checked my subscription and all is okay there. Any hints, tips or clues? ?Thank you. |

I default my groups to MODERATED, period.? As owner, I have the ability to unmoderate anyone in the group on a selective basis.? I watch and see who is responsible and who follows the rules, as well as who is posting regularly.? THEN, and only then will I consider unmoderating an individual - and as always, I reserve the right to re-moderate them if they change their habits. "Freedom of Speech" applies to government entities only.? As a private group, you are allowed to establish your own rules of conduct, including what kind of speech you will allow.? No one forces people to join your group, they are free to come and go as they please.? If they don't like the rules, they can leave. Bill Hickey Boulder, CO |
Re: Transfer from Yahoo of the links section
Don,
1. Will the links in Yahoo's Links section be transferred toYes. They will be converted into a table in the Database section. 2. When making a new topic, is it necessary to add a hashtag? No. Not unless the group has checked the "Hashtags Required" box in the Message Policies section of the Settings page. Transfer from Yahoo of the links section
I am almost ready to transfer one of my Yahoo groups to Groups.io.
I have two questions?at this time. 1. Will the links in Yahoo's Links section be transferred to Groups.io? All of the outside links?have been vetted and are for sites with information related to the purpose?of the group. 2. When making a new topic, is it necessary to add a hashtag? Don Clark |
Not Receiving Pending Subscriber Notifications
Jim Higgins
For the past several days I haven't been receiving notifications of new subscribers requiring my approval. They aren't hung up in my ISP's spam filters... I see no delivery failures associated with my membership as group owner... I have all available notifications turned on so I should be getting signup notices. I wouldn't have seen this issue if I hadn't looked at my groups via the web because I usually deal with subscription approvals entirely by email. Anyone else seeing this problem? Jim H |

Thank you, Shal. Legally, we are not supposed to discuss anything that is a topic of executive session outside that group. That's what I meant. If that's the situation that has you wanting to move messages back to the exec session group, I wouldn't bother moving them. I'd delete them and tell the poster to repost to the proper forum. If they persist, then I'd put them on moderated status in the "wrong" forum and reject inappropriate postings that should have been posted to the exec forum. This will give them incentive to correct their behavior and it avoids you having to forward messages that would then have your info in the headers when you weren't the original author of those messages. There are times when the urge to help correct others' mistakes should be ignored. I think this may be one of them. Jim H |
