I cannot claim that this suggestion is anything "brilliant", but would making your Calendar editable by subscribers work? Or would it be too vulnerable to mistakes and inadvertent deletions?

Thanks,

I now understand the e-mail "command", but shouldn't I receive a copy if I, a moderator, add the moderator's link to CC or BCC or is that not implemented in the "command" action?

In the strictest sense you aren't "sending an email"; you are sending a command to Groups.io to reject a post. Similarly an ("email") command sent to release a post to the members cannot be used to edit the post, e.g. trim off excessive quotation or correct an obvious and perhaps confusing spelling error.

Is using the web interface that much of a chore?

Oh.? Yeah, that would be a deal-breaker for us.

No, this is not currently possible.

I feel that the title of "Moderator" is somewhat unfortunate. In groups.io, individual Moderator roles and notifications are highly configurable and -- if you want -- can be totally unrelated to the screening of incoming messages (see list below). I suggest you investigate that option further.

Hope this helps,

There's no feature to create new roles, but you might be able to get the effect you want by using a subgroup for the Executive Board.

The calendar of the Executive Board subgroup can be set to "Public can view, Subscribers can view and edit". That would allow only members of the Executive Board subgroup to update that calendar.

The "public can view" part might be a concern, as I think that means public, and not just members of the primary group. And you'd probably want to disable the primary group's calendar; and the members of the primary group would need to be taught to look at the subgroup's calendar instead. So not necessarily the most convenient work-around.

But you may find other advantages to having a subgroup for the Executive Board, it would give them the resources of a group (including their own messages) that could be private from the primary group at large.

Sha
Thanks, Shal, that's an useful insight.? I don't think we care if the calendar is public because the state bylaws say that all of our meetings are open to the public.

Glenn

Why is "moderators" inappropriate? Seems like a lot of work (for Mark) just to avoid using the word "moderator".

You could always make them (co)owners...

Chris
_._,_._,_

Moderators is inappropriate because, wait for it, they don't moderate and the even the implication that the speech of our members is moderated is against the culture of the group.? And I can see use cases for other kinds of roles in addition to just {member, moderator, owner} for some groups.? For example, a group might have a separate set of members who manage their databases or their files.? For reference, I see this from a UNIX RBAC perspective, which permits an arbitrary number of roles.? .

That said, the answer to the question I actually asked is apparently no?

Best,

Glenn

To reject a post, I'm pretty sure that would be +reject instead of +delete.? Delete just tosses the post in the bit bucket with no action taken.

Re: Date Format - was: Groups.io site updates

Jim,

That's fine for those of us "in the know" but that punctuation is not
a standard outside Groups.io, so for new users the first two remain
ambiguous.
True, but that's more an argument for more documentation than an argument against using distinct punctuation.

Note that we're talking about a small use case: where someone copied or screen-shot from groups.io's web interface for use as an example or answer (or the like).

Otherwise the user would be seeing the format of their own choice, and if they're uncertain (or certain that it is wrong) hopefully the user would think to look at their own Account Preferences to see what choices are available in Groups.io.

Use of alpha month for those two would resolve it.
Only if you speak English. Or the language of choice, in some future world where Groups.io has localizations to other languages.

Create a new role

Glenn Glazer

Hi, all.

On our committee list, we do not do any moderation at all.? However, some members should have more power over the other features (specifically calendar) than others.

Since "moderators" isn't appropriate, I would like to create a new role called "Executive Board" or "EBoard", assign members to that role and then privileges only to that role.

Is this possible?

Thanks,

Glenn

Yay, so now there are three unambiguous date formats. That is, you can
always tell which you're looking at by the punctuation:
DD.MM.YYYY
MM/DD/YYYY
YYYY-MM-DD (ISO-8601)
That's fine for those of us "in the know" but that punctuation is not a
standard outside Groups.io, so for new users the first two remain ambiguous.
Use of alpha month for those two would resolve it.

Re: Groups.io site updates #changelog

Moderators and poll creators might not want to not reveal results which do not support an action that would be taken.

Can anyone explain to me why a poll would be made where the members could not see the results of their participation?

It might be used as a "straw poll" or non-binding vote. I've thought about using something like this to get an idea of whether group members would be interested in certain things. One reason I'd do it this way is because many times folks just vote for the most popular answer without really thinking about the question. I think not having the results available would be more indicative of true feelings on some groups.

I'm not sure if it would work, but I'd also consider making the results available (turning off this setting) once the poll was ready to be closed for most items.

?Thanks.......... I understand now.

I guess I will go through the database and put spaces in between?each word of a group's name. That would make the search work.
?
Many have written their group's name without spaces because that is how it appears as their groups name in IO. ?
?
I can see how it would be a low priority. Thanks for suggesting it in Beta.

No, search can't do partial searches.? The search term must be a complete "word" that's totally separate from other words.? If you search for Fly and the entry is FlyGuy, it won't find it.? If the entry were Fly Guy, it would.? In neither case would it find 'uy'.? I've asked for this on the beta group, but it's a low priority, so may not be implemented any time soon.? (One of my groups has a db with part numbers and finding a partial number would be a big help.)? For now, you might be better off editing the db to add spaces where appropriate.

Correct. It's a word search, not a string search.

See the wiki entry at?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Using-the-Search-Engine? It's written for searching the message archive, but I believe the same engine is being used site-wide. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on that.
