It got the reverse malfunction:
I have 12 hour time selected, which the Start drop down uses, but the End drop down has 24 hours

Maybe the code got switched up somewhere to have cross malfunctions

The system remembers which view you normally use.? The only gotcha is that if you choose a group from the overview page, /, it reverts to the Topic view because it's hard-coded on those links.? The suggestion has been made that this be changed to use the user preference, but I don't think a decision was ever made.

Calendar bugs

I've tried many times to create an Event in the Calendar, but keep getting the message:
"You have entered an incorrectly formatted date or time.¡±
?
The event is 4th Sundays, 2-5pm
?
1) I think the problem is with the time function in ¡°End¡±
?
¡°Start¡± allows me to select: 2:00pm?
?
however the ¡°End¡± time box then displays ¡°Invalid Date¡±, its pull down menu offers:
00:00 to 23:30 in 1/2 hour increments.
I¡¯ve tried both 3:00 (duration) and 17:00 (24 hour clock)
and still get the same message when I click on "+ Add Event":
"You have entered an incorrectly formatted date or time.¡±

I would also prefer being able to specify times, rather than having to select 1/2 hours.

2) It is most annoying and frustrating that the form is then cleared and I have to re-enter every field again, instead of just indicating which fields need correction / completion
?
?
I find nothing in Help for: Calendar
?
I also searched in the GMF Wiki for: Calendar and the only result that comes close is
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Member-Notices?
but it doesn't cover these bugs

Re: Send "automatic" files to pending/new members

|?For monthly reminders, I use a hashtag that causes the message to be deleted after a month.? Reduces the clutter and folks won't find old information, thinking it's current.

My GMF: Home in Top Hashtags states (among others):
red boxed "#admin" Administrative messages from the moderators (21)
?
?
On my GMF: Messages there are 21 "Group Managers Forum subscription reminder" messages?
followed by a red boxed "#admin" and a blue boxed "#cal-reminder"
?
They are:
Group Managers Forum subscription reminder
from Monday, 1 August 2016 to Wed, 11/1/17
?
None for Dec 2017 or Jan 2018
?
Group Managers Forum subscription reminder #admin -
from Thu, 3/3/18 to Fri, 6/1/18
?
?
Shouldn't only the current one remain?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

First of all, thanks for your thoughts on all the issues I raised.? I am not sure Mark would be interested in getting our messages loaded, considering his other concerns at this time.? His easy transfer option was actually a nice way to reach out to those who wanted to transfer the groups.?? One of my groups was transferred that way and things are working great.? I have a feeling this group will probably work fine prospectively, but the history from the old group will have to be managed as best we can.

On two of the issues, see below.

Thanks, Dale

Sorry, I don't follow that.
I was probably a little bit too terse in explaining my issue.?? With PG Offline, I have a directory consisting of folders (albums) of photos.? The members were very good about putting their photos in albums, rather than just posting a photo.? Groups.io requires me to create and title an album and then take the photos out of each existing album and place them in the new album.? Actually a very good interface to keep member photos organized, but it takes a bit of effort.?? What I was hoping for is a way to simply post my album with its contents intact without having to create the album on groups.io and then load it.? With 260 albums, this is a bit of work.
??? ???

If the original group's messages were not open to the public you may want to be concerned about posting their content on a publicly visible web site. There's a very strong YMMV there, based on the nature of your group and its members.
??? ???

That is a consideration, but I doubt it would matter.? The group deals with vintage HO trains and the historical information I spoke of is of manufacturers, most of whom are no longer in business, and their product lines.?? Not really confidential information but lost except to those who remember and were involved in this years ago.?? Most business records ended up in the dumpster but collectors appreciate this information and its relevance to their collections.?

I checked the Yahoo site and it is a public group, so I don't think this would be an issue.?? I am not familiar with the acronym YMMV.? I assume that the Y is Yahoo and the V is violation, but what is in between?

Is there a way to make "MESSAGES" the default? It would be nice not to have to make that change every time you sing on.

Re: A somewhat unique transfer situation.

Dale,

Shal, Thanks for the suggestion about contacting Wilson.
I'll be interested in hearing what he has to say. I took a peek at the user community but only found a couple old references to a defunct classic (pre-neo) Y!Group exporter and one answer from Wilson where the OP never followed up.

Looking at my own copy of PG Offline I'd say that neither the plain nor HTML text exports would be very gratifying to work with - they reproduce only the text of the messages (no HTML formatting or embedded images). There's an export to "SQL dump" but I don't speak database and haven't looked into that. Possibly it would have more complete message info, and possibly someone with the right skills could convert that to an mbox file.

This message was rejected by the beta group as not what that group was
designed for, but Mark Fletcher suggested I post it in GMF.
Yeah, he's got a lot on his plate. Anything we can do to answer usage questions and the like frees up his time to concentrate on features - which is the proper topic for beta. I don't know why the topic was allowed in beta earlier, it may be just an example of "moderator is human" (and overworked).

As to Mbox, do you know how an import would work? Does it require
assistance from groups.io support?
Yes. Only Y!Groups and Google groups have a degree of automation to the process, and even then there are manual steps by "the transfer agent" (aka Mark). To import an mbox file you would first need to host the file somewhere that Mark could read it (cloud storage of one brand or another) and then email a link to it to [email protected]. Mark may need other information as well, so the first step might be to contact support and ask how to proceed.

Also, the question of posting photos by the album rather than by the
photo would go a great way to making things work.
Sorry, I don't follow that.

As I run several related websites, I know I could put the old messages
and attachments up in html form on a web page. I just need to figure
out some sorting techniques that would make them easier to use.

Quite so; I didn't explain what I meant all that well. What I meant was that it is not possible for "x" in the Index of a Group wiki to be a direct link to the GMF wiki page on the subject. Seems silly to set up an indexed page containing nothing more than a link to the GMF wiki!

Chris

Re: Automatic Unsubscribes?

Chris,

As an option you can put a link to it in a message, but that can be
forgotten about all to easily by those reading it; a wiki entry is
there forever! (As far as I can see there is no way of making a wiki
entry simply a link to the GMF wiki.)
It is easy enough to put a link to GMF's wiki on one of your wiki pages, but no I don't think you can arrange for a page in your group's wiki to automatically redirect to GMF's.

Re: A somewhat unique transfer situation.

Shal, Thanks for the suggestion about contacting Wilson.? This message was rejected by the beta group as not what that group was designed for, but Mark Fletcher suggested I post it in GMF.?? It was discussed about 3 years ago on the beta group in connection with groups where the moderator had abandoned them, so I guess it was considered appropriate then, but the suggestions then required help from Yahoo support, which as we all know is non-existent now. ? I might also try [email protected]

Nobody here is involved with day-to-day operation of groups.io. We are just group owners like yourself, trying to help each other.

To put this inquiry in perspective, there is currently no user-accessible function to restore a groups.io group from it's own backup, let alone a third-party one.

If you're the Dale Smith who asked this same question 9 days ago (ref: /g/GroupManagersForum/message/9249), I believe the answer is unchanged:? contact support and see if Mark can help you. If not, you'll have to do some more hand-holding with the existing group owner.

Good luck,

A somewhat unique transfer situation.

I have a slightly unusual transfer situation, though I understand that we are not alone. The Yahoo group we want to transfer has one owner only, who cannot log into the Yahoo site, for what reason we can't be sure.? He has given up trying to get in and asked us to take the lead in setting up a new group on groups.io, which we have done. ? In any case, he cannot create owners, moderators, or send invitations to the transfer agent, so easy transfer is not an option.

I downloaded the contents of the entire group using PG Offline and now have a database of messages with attachments in .pg4 format, and the contents of the files and photos sections of the old Yahoo Group.?? I know I can upload the photos, but with 260 folders of photos it could take a lot of effort and time. If photos could be loaded by the folder, rather than having to create a folder and then load the contents into it, that would even be a help.

The messages are the big problem.? We have about 26000 messages and my export options do not include Mbox format, which I understand can be uploaded to groups.io.? I can convert to multiple html pages and could do that to create an archive that I could host on a companion website, but that would not be a good solution.? The messages need to be preserved because this group has amassed a great deal of historical information that could be valuable to future members. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way for us to proceed.

Dale Smith

Re: Help interpreing a system message "because a message to them was marked as spam"

Shal, No worries.? We've been very diligent about vetting new members and politely enforcing netiquette so I'd rather be scolded than miss the point ;-)?
I've had this happen once before and observed at that time that the member almost immediately rejoined.? I put him temporarily on moderated status and looked at his past posts, neither of which showed anything worthy of concern, and unmoderated him a few posts later.

Your and Bruce's explaination and the link turn the tables correctly on what that actually meant.

Cheers, Peter
