Re: Hi, I just started a group, and am ready to learn!

I should explain that more. My owner email that subscribers get is:
[email protected]

But I've sent myself a test email to that, and it's not coming to me. Where can I specific where that will be directed?

Thanks!

That's all very peculiar, and not in keeping with my experience with groups.io

My guess [read: wild stab in the dark] is that your browser is auto-filling this information. None of it will be saved to your account and/or profile unless you click on the save/update buttons.

Hope this helps,

I can't even figure out yet where the owner email is going to! Can anyone help?

Incomplete transfer #wiki

I've added a section on incomplete Yahoo transfers to the GMF wiki.??

/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Transfer-from-Yahoo-Groups#Incomplete-transfer

Please review and edit as needed. In particular, I am unclear on how inviting the transfer agent will be handled when it is probably already a Moderator of the Y!G. Does one have to delete that membership and send a new invitation?

Ilene's files transferred just fine. She just expected to be able to edit files online, which cannot be done.

You have to delete the completed transfer request(s) first. Only then can you start a new transfer for just the files section.

Select the groups affected one by one and hit the red "Delete Completed Transfer" button on the resulting page.

Profile Photo, and Display vs User Name?

So far as Owner I've transferred 7 of my 10 YahooGroups to Groups.io and all seems to have gone well. I expect to OK the transfer of the other 3 after group meetings this week.
?
The Groups.io Help section is pretty good, but doesn't cover everything.
?
?
Subscription: Group Profile: Edit Group Profile
?
?
Profile Photo:
I see a picture that I didn't select. It happens to be my current Facebook and YahooGroups Profile Picture. I do like it, but how did it get to Groups.io? as part of the transfer?
?
BTW I never sign in with my profile from one thing into another (e.g. Facebook profile to sign in to YahooGroups) - as I do not wish to cross-contaminate.
?
?
Display vs User Name:
?
There is a "User Name": @mjp?
Those are my initials, but what is this?
What is this for?
How did it get here on Groups.io? I do use my middle initial in one of my email addresses, but not this one and never in my name attached any of my email addresses?
Is this a Twit handle? I never did Twitter. I barely text, and only if I have to.
Shouldn't this be my actual name?
I can't see how to get rid of or change it.
I haven't found a User Name for any member, including the only other one with a Profile Picture or my 4 other email addresses; nor for a Moderator or the other Owner (yet another email address of mine) - they all say: "User name is not set."
?
I see "Display Name (The name listed with your posts.)"
I presume it got here because I do use my email address in the form of My Actual Name <username@domain>
I can change it, and as Owner (in Admin: Members) I've been putting member's actual names here that didn't have it, which also puts them in the Directory making it more usable.
While typing actual names as Display Name, sometimes 'auto fill' options show up - if I choose the bottom choice the member's name is entered, however if I choose the top choice my name is entered with a temporary yellow background (a warning?).
?
The Help section's Definitions does not define or explain these, nor can I find that information anywhere else.

Re: Files moved but are empty

Shal, I had the same exact problem with my two large groups.? Files did not transfer at all.? I tried to re-transfer both groups again, but just checking off the Files section.? I don't see any "pending" notice when I go back and check my submission, though, on the Easy Transfer page.? It just shows both groups as "completed".? The transfer agent ID is still set on both groups as "moderator".? So, not sure what this process will look like?? Has anyone tried to transfer their list(s) again, but just one section??

Re: Problem with the way Groups.io sends group messages

Shal,
? I agree - sort of - with Peter R. on this one.? The real difference between what
users were getting from ("used to") yahoo groups and groups.io is related to the
difference between Individual Messages and Digests.
? My email sorting filters for Digests?work just fine - but in order for me to sort
my email from groups that I have set to Individual they don't ... unless I put a
filter in that is more specific/selective than the one I used before I changed
from Individual to Digest ... because -my- email client doesn't recognize
them with respect to my existing sorting filters.

? I use Tbird for my email client. It does allow wildcards.? The yahoo groups that
I run on Digest did not require changes to my filters ... as long as the group?
name was essentially the same.? *G*

Hi,
? I have posted two (2) messages to the topic about GoDaddy
and neither one has shown up in any digest.? Anybody have an
idea why that might have happened??
? They were not posted on the same day.? They are in the
message archive and show up both by looking for Topics

I agree it would be nice if login was implemented as a popup that subsequently refreshes the page you're already on. That would be a good suggestion for the beta group (https://beta.groups.io/g/main/topics).

Re: Why does Log In change the site?

Victoria,

Shal, I?ve seen you are online. I have a question:

?Dang, busted. ;-)
?

?Same I am told by members who are subscribed only to one group. They say each time the go on the site of the group, log in, the site changes and they must select it again. Why the detour? ?

?I don't know.? It seems reasonable to me that the site should return you to the page you were on when you complete a log in.

There was a in beta not that long ago. The discussion in beta is a little different though, I think they were assuming that the member was at the site home page before logging in. I don't really care about that case.
?
I think the "Email me a link to log in" mechanism returns you to the page where you were, as Bob said in that discussion. It seems to on my smart phone anyway. Seems to me the other log in mechanisms ought to as well.

Ilene,

But many files are useless unless a member leaves the group, wants to know the rules again and the application for membership which they won't get automatically and is virtually useless once they become a member.

?Our messages "crossed in the mail". For these purposes see my note about Member Notices, and our wiki page.? Wiki pages are not appropriate for notices to be sent to members.

So the files that in Y Groups that were scheduled to be sent upon joining the group,
Bi-weekly, Monthly etc cannot be scheduled to be sent in IO Groups.
?
?Correct. Here those features are handled differently.?

When a member joins my 2nd IO group, I have to send them the directions they need to follow directly to their personal email address as they won't get them upon joining.

?Copy that file content into a ?Welcome member notice.

When someone leaves the group, the Sorry to see you leave file can't be auto sent to them.

?Copy that file content into a ?Goodbye member notice.

When someone joins the group, the Application isn't sent to them. It all has to be done manually.?

?Copy that file content into a Pending Subscription member notice.

For notices, the calendar needs to be used.

Ilene,

?If these are files that are intended to be readable online, like regular web pages, you might be happier copying their content into Wiki pages.

Pro:
  • You, your members, and even the public can read them (set by the permission for your wiki).
  • You (and your members, if you permit) ?can edit them online
  • When you edit them a revision history is kept so you can monitor changes.
  • They don't count against your group's storage limit

?Con:
  • ?There is no built-in folder heirarchy
  • There is no sortable list of the pages.

Now when I do that, I still can't read the file when I click on edit.

?No, you cannot. The Edit function in Groups.io's Files does not include the file content. You view the content by opening the file (if your browser supports that file type) or downloading it.
?
I even tried creating a new file and there isn't any place to write the content of the file.

?Correct. That functionality has been discussed in the "suggestion box" group, , but not implemented. Instead you must create the file on your computer and upload it.
?
Also in Y groups you can select when you want the members to receive a file.
How do you do that in groups IO

?Groups.io does not have a scheduling option for files. Here you do that either with Member Notices (a tab in your group's Settings page) for notices to be sent on various events such a joining or leaving a group, or with calendar Events if you just want to send the notice periodically.

You can't edit files online.? You have to download each file, make any edits, and upload.? If you don't change the filename, you'll need to delete the originals before uploading since duplicates aren't allowed.? Ot you can put the updated files in another folder.
