Re: groups.io owners standards and ethics

Marvin,

Was wondering, what standards, do group owners have to behave on . can they behave like anything at all.

A couple years ago there was a lengthy discussion on having a site-wide for Groups.io, but there were many concerns and nothing ever became of it. It was more focused on member behavior than moderator/owner behavior, if I recall correctly.
?

A owner of a group, has been ?very rude to me, using foul language ??and said he will kick my but and also been harassing me, and even bullying from time to time.

General rudeness doesn't rise to the level of being a Terms of Service violation, but see 1.6 in the User Conduct section, that would apply also to moderators/owners.

However I would suggest following Jim's advice to just leave the group if it is unsuited or hostile to you, rather than dwelling on trying to change the group owner's behavior. Group membership is two-way voluntary: you can always leave, and they can always ban you; either is fair game.

Respect at all times for all, it has to be that way and it should be that way always. If not dump the group.? Good luck.

Without getting into too much details, one way an owner might say odd things to members (or perceived as getting odd messages from owners) is policy reasons. A group owner may send private messages to members if policies are violated, or have a question about conduct and what not. This implies that, for the most part, owners operate under policies set forth either by themselves or by group as a whole. Ultimately, group owners, themselves members of the group, and in extension, users of Groups.IO themselves, are expected to follow service guidelines.

Good to know, Shal. I'll put that in the search wiki page.

Re: Member receiving daily summaries when "NO EMAIL" selected

Ken,

And I've double checked the individual's Email Delivery setting has "NO EMAIL" checked.

Is it possible the individual has two subscriptions?

You could go to the group's Members list and click on the Delivery column heading to sort by Delivery. You may need to click twice to flip the sort to reverse order, that will bring the "Summary" subscriptions to the top. If there are relatively few Summary subscriptions you might be able to spot an alternate subscription by the same individual, if his/her two email addresses are similar.
?

I will try experimenting and changing his Email Delivery setting to Daily Summary for a day and then back to NO EMAIL to see if toggling the setting fixes it.

If it does, that fact should be reported to [email protected] - that would be a bug.

If that doesn't work and no one else is seeing this, I'll be at a loss.

I'd try to get the individual to forward me a copy of such a Summary email, with the full header included (if that's practical in his/her email interface); or examine the header him/herself. Near the top of the header is an X-Original-To: field that shows the address to which it was sent. The ordinary To: field might give the answer, but might instead have been modified if he/she has one email address forwarding messages to another.

Bruce,

There is no one within management associated with this forum. Send such inquiries to [email protected]

Actually Vera cited a message in the beta group, and that would be the most appropriate place to revisit the feature request. That particular topic is locked, but a new one, focused on this particular feature, could be started.

Support is more for bugs.

Re: Problem with searching messages

Debbie,

I'm putting in someone's email address (and I tried it with my own, too) and if I set it for the last three days, I get nothing.

Note that search encompasses only the Subject and body of the messages, not the From or To addresses. So searching for an email address will only be effective if the address was mentioned in the body (or subject) of a message.

If you want to search for messages from a particular member you can do that from the group's Directory, or from any message posted by that member (see the More menu). Once you've done that you can add search terms after the "posterid=nnn" to focus the search. You can also use the posterid keyword in the regular search box, if you happen to know the id of the member in question. I do that often to find my own posts.

My advice is to Leave That Group - NOW and forever.? The owner/moderators set
the "tone" of the group.? Clearly that group is not suited to you.

Any thoughts. Maybe have a document or set of standards for behaviour on groups.io.

Re: @mentions

I should also "mention" that in groups.io, there is no systemwide account identifier outside of the user's email address. Sending a mention of the format "@username@..." is clumsy at best and could easily become a vector for spam. I'm sure there's an account number somewhere, but is not currently accessible anywhere and would be an equally clumsy patch.

The point I'm making is that implementation of this seemingly innocent feature would require a significant rewrite of existing user account and notification systems. Throw in the fact that a significant fraction of groups.io users never log in at all (they would have to be notified by email), and the likelihood of this occurring anytime soon strikes me as remote.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Hi Bruce,

?

Thanks, yes the option " Disable No Email " in Admin->Settings->Message Policies is NOT checked. And I've double checked the individual's Email Delivery setting has "NO EMAIL" checked.

I will try experimenting and changing his Email Delivery setting to Daily Summary for a day and then back to NO EMAIL to see if toggling the setting fixes it.

You should also be sure the "no email" option is even available to your subscribers. Go to Admin->Settings->Message Policies and make sure "Disable no email" is NOT checked.

Thanx Bruce... That's the option that I was loooking for. Wasn't clear which would be the best way to effect that.

You might also want to change the group to an Announcement Group to keep those
who have already joined from posting. You can always change things back after the
transfer.?
I have the group already set so that only moderators may post. Is that sufficient if 'Restricted Membership' is invoked?

Much appreciated . . .
