Members cannot post photos in my group - why not? #membership #photos #notworking

John

I'd like to know why members of my group cannot post photos at this time as it would be a useful thing for my group. Is there something I need to change in the group settings, or is it something the members need to do first??

Thanks, John1097.

Re: Help with STAT Letters

AliceT,

When we send Stationery letters it goes to the group all broken up.
I don't have experience with stationary groups, but my understanding is that there are a few group settings that are relevant.

In the Message Formatting box:

Normalize HTML Emails - don't check
Attachments - allow
Plain Text Only - don't check

In the Photos box:

Max Size In Email - No resizing

Also, each subscriber has a setting to control the largest allowed attachment. That might affect the stationary images (I'm not sure about that). On your group's Settings page, in the "Default Sub Settings" tab, you might want:

Max Attachment Size - Unlimited

That won't affect any current subscribers, but it will set the default for new subscribers when they join your group.

#suggestion - Add address field to profile #suggestion

In our application, it would be helpful if members could include their personal contact information, including mailing address, in their profile which could then be downloaded for snail mail and contact lists.

?

Not sure how/if GDPR would come into play, but since it would be voluntary it should not be a problem.

?

Here is my suggestion:

?

In the profile have the following optional fields:

?

Mailing address:

Address 1

Address 2

City, State, Zip

Country

Phone:

Cell

Home

?

In the Admin Settings, there would be a checkbox that says ¡°Include personal contact information in the member profile.¡±??The box would default to un-checked so those groups who do not want to collect personal information would not be affected.

?

Then if this could be downloaded as an Excel (or CSV) file it could then be easily used for mailing.

?

Peace,

Tom

(Also submitted to the Beta?Group.)

Re: #suggestion - Add address field to profile #suggestion

Tom,

In our application, it would be helpful if members had a place to
include their mailing address in their profile which could then be
downloaded for snail mail.
If you drop that into the Groups.io "suggestion box" (the beta group) I'll second it.

That would be handy in my classmate groups - we're a bunch of people who've kept in touch for (far too many) decades in real life, so most of us don't mind sharing real-world contact info (address, phone number, etc.) with other group members.

We use a database table for that now, but it has a bit of an out-of-sight, out-of-mind problem -- the group Directory is more visible.

Not sure how/if GDPR would come into play, ...
Me either (IANAL) but given that filling in the info would be purely voluntary, and would be for the express purpose of sharing it with other group members, I don't see a practical problem.

I think the premise is that by the time you've gotten 500 words into a message the subject matter should have been mentioned at least once. Groups.io was set up to accommodate discussion groups...those with a need to post lengthy documents as messages and rely on the search engine to index those documents for them are in a definite minority here.

Would anyone else have more definitive info please?

Message numbers in any given groups.io group start at 1. I believe the transfer agent simply inserts the messages in the same order that they appear in the Y!G, incrementing as it goes.?If?there are any gaps in the posts to your Yahoo group (posts that were subsequently deleted or whatever), things will certainly get out of whack at that point. Also, if you've posted anything to your new group you are already out of sync.?

You can always do the transfer and cross your fingers, but I wouldn't get my hopes too high.

Re: Replace Moderator

Prasad Agrahar

Some years ago I ran into a similar situation with a Yahoo group when the owner either passed or abandoned the group. Luckily I was a moderator with limited level of authorizations. I had a long dialog with Yahoogroups support people and they raised my authorizations to maximum level but refused to change me to owner. The group has still remained active. I have recently succeeded in moving it to groups.io.?

Today Yahoo has no any support for their groups and so above is no longer an option. If ypou are not a moderator the only method could be that you create a new group and ask members of your Yahoo group to join it. Files and photos can be moved manually by the members who had added them. They can also be moved by you but will get listed under your profile.?

The moderator of OTRonPando recently passed away.? There appears to be no co-moderator.? How do we go about getting moderators to replace the deceased moderator?? This would seem to be the same case as a mod who has abandoned the group.

Re: Searching issues

Another thing to keep in mind is that search only finds complete words.? If you were searching for A1DEF2 as part of C2A1DEF2, it won't be found.? Basically, you can search for items that have a space on either end.? I haven't yet found a post long enough to check on finding it further down, but maybe this will allow you to do so.? There has been some discussion on the beta group about having partial searches, especially with things like part numbers (or code), but no progress yet.

Re: Searching issues

Thanks for the reply Milt.

As for the speed, well it may be fast but if it only searches part of a message then it is of no use at all.

After all if most messages are less than 50 lines or 500 words long, then it makes no sense to limit the amount of the message it searches on to speed things up, as the 'limits' will not be reached.

Would anyone else have more definitive info please?

Cheers

No experience searching GIO beyond 50 or so lines because most posts on my group
are no longer than that. However, if I were writing code for a search and
wanted to speed up the search (and WOW, the GIO search is *FAST!*), I'd probably
limit the search to the first 500 words or 50 lines or something similar.

River's post points up a REAL PROBLEM for those groups who have only one Owner. If your group is one of them, I recommend that you remedy that immediately.

There is always a chance that some rogue subscriber will lie to support about a dead (or simply inactive) owner in an attempt to take over a group. I'm not saying that River is one of them...but believe me, it happens. Groups.io management cannot get in the middle of this, or spend time chasing down group ownership issues on a regular basis. It may not even be legal from them to do so.

I'm very interested in what the response from support will be. Please be prepared for the possibility that you may have to start a new group from scratch.

Group transfer and message ID #transfer #messages

Hi all,

I'm exploring the potentiality of transferring a yahoo group to
The current group is linked to a database which refers to the yahoo group's messages using the yahoo message number.

So my question is: during the transfer process, will the imported messages get the same message ID/number or at least the new message ID will be a concatenation of the former yahoo message number and something else?

Thank you in advance for your answer.

"It looks like I mixed terms here.? I am looking to change the group owner - not moderator."

Best practices advice (in my opinion) always, always, always have minimum of 2 owners. We have 3 and rotate duties on monthly basis.

Re: Replace Moderator

As far as I know, there is no set procedure in place.? There has been some discussion about it on the beta group (search for "missing owner".)? Your best bet would likely be to contact [email protected], including as much information as you can to see if they can (or will) do anything.

Re: Help with STAT Letters

Alice, I am an Incredimail user and have absolutely no problems with my groups I own and belong to.
You have to make sure that the member is on "Individual?Messages".
?
The problem?for me is?checking the?emails on the web as the images used to make up the stationery are visible and possible to download as attachment, which is not really what?I would want.

Searching issues

Hi,

Still getting to grips with this platform and have come across an issue with the search routine.

The group I run has messages that can contain as much as 5,000 lines of data.
When using the search option, it seems to return results for the first 50 or so lines, but beyond that everything is completely ignored.
I have contacted the support email address but not heard anything back as yet. (Does this take like a day, a week, a month?)
Has anyone else experienced this issue and if you have what was your findings please?

Also, is there a post or a wiki page or such like that also explains how the search routine actually works.

Part of the data in the messages are in hexadecimal format and I notice that if I enter one in the search field it appears it tries to search on each individual character rather than the entire 'word'
for example if I search on
A1DEF2
the results highlight every 'A', every '1', every 'D', etc

Thanks for your help
Alexis
