Re: How does one *split* a topic?

Brian Vogel

Shal,

? ? ? ? ? What I want is that first message to be split off as a topic of its own, with a new title, while all the earlier messages in the existing topic, continue as a single topic with the original title.

? ? ? ? ? I have my display order to show newest messages first, so in reality that message was the most recently posted at the end of the thread.? The split function on groups.io is far less obvious than it is on another forum on which I moderate.? There one selects a message, or messages, via checkboxes that appear near the upper left where our message numbers do.? ?I will often split off a couple of messages that really deserve to be a topic of their own, and can do this from anywhere in the existing thread, including skipping posts [one can check non-contiguous messages].

? ? ? ? ? If sort order is having this effect then I think that's a bug.

Normally, you would set default mail delivery information for the group at Admin->Settings->Default Sub Setting (button at the top of the settings page). Everyone who subsequently joins the group will get this setting, which they can override through either the Subscription menu or by sending one of the standard listserv-type commands (see /static/help#emailcommands).

When transferring from Yahoo, email delivery preferences migrate with each user record. So much for email delivery...

What Mike is doing is entirely different. If I understand correctly, he is setting Posting Privileges (not to be confused with email delivery preferences), one by one for each member, using the override commands at the bottom of each subscriber record. This does not affect mail delivery, but instead whether that person's posts are/are not moderated, or even allowed. I do not recommend this. It's not the intended use of those fields, but more than that, it's way too much work to maintain. Set your group moderation policy in the group settings, and save these checkboxes for special cases.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Re: How does one *split* a topic?

Brian,

When I hit the "More" at the bottom of the first message in the
thread I want to split, this is what I get:
In your screen shot it looks like that's the first message of the topic. In which case there are no prior messages to split it from (which is why the menu item doesn't appear for the first messages).

This must be controlled by a group level setting configured by the group owner.? ?When I hit the "More" at the bottom of the first message in the thread I want to split, this is what I get:

Re: owner getting every message posted

Pete,

Good thinking, but, no dice. They're going to, and coming from. the
main group.
Do the individual emails have the standard group footer at the bottom?

If so then the only way I can imagine that happening is that you have a second subscription to the group under a different email address (different than the one whose settings you showed).

If not, then they are coming to you by some other means. Maybe the members are CCing their messages to you as well as sending them To the group. Possibly they are sending them to the group's +owner address instead of or in addition to the group's posting address - I've occasionally seen that confusion.

In Gmail's interface you can select "Show original" to get a wealth of information about how the message came to you. If reading email headers is not your joy feel free to send an example (copy of the Show original) to me off-list.

One more thing to try before you contact support.? Try changing your delivery to something else, save it, then change it back.? Maybe something got out of sync.? If that does it, you may still want to contact support and report what happened so Mark can look into it.

Re: How does one *split* a topic?

You'll need to go into the topic/thread.? Then use the More menu at the bottom of the post where you want the split to occur.? One of the items on the menu is Split.? Clicking on that will open a box asking for the subject of the new thread.

There are a couple of things to be aware of. 1)? All posts after the one you split will go with it.? You could then split off again to a temporary topic, which you could merge back into the original.? 2)? If you sort with newest at the top, you won't be able to split the top/last reply.? You'd need to revert to oldest first so it would be at the bottom for it to be split-able.? Mark is aware of this, but hasn't patched it yet.

It can get complicated and confusing quickly, so I use it very sparingly.

How does one *split* a topic?

Brian Vogel

The need to do this hasn't arisen often, but it does arise.

I am quite familiar with the merge feature on groups.io, but I don't see any explicit function that allows you to split a post (or series of posts) contained in an existing topic off into a new topic of their own, usually assigning a new topic title as part of the process.

Hi Mike.

You wrote...
"It may be that your service is set to permit postings by individuals, but only after the first message has been moderated.? I am in this situation, also.? -When a new person joins, I must manually allow this person to post."

Humm. Does that (have to manually set posting rights to all new members) even apply to members migrated over from yahoogroups? I thought their rights migrate with them.

Re: owner getting every message posted

Bruce's mention of subgroups got me to thinking (and it didn't hurt too much!)? Each group and subgroup should have a subscription setting for you to choose.? Are the messages you've been getting from the main group, a subgroup, or both?? Sort of a last ditch effort, but that's the only thing I can think of.

Re: owner getting every message posted

Peter -- I see nothing here that would explain your problem. I do see that you have subgroups. I don't, and am glad. They seem to be nothing but a headache. Perhaps someone here who has subgroups has experienced this same problem and can jump in. At this point I am completely stumped.

Sorry,
Bruce

Re: owner getting every message posted

No, it's not moderated.

Here are my subscription settings.

Is your group moderated? If so, you will get a copy of each message as it is posted so you can perform your function as moderator, regardless of your Email Delivery settings. To turn that off, open your Subscription settings again and scroll down to Notifications. Unclick the box that says "Email when there are messages needing approval."

I admit this is a stab in the dark. If you continue to have problems, sending us a screenshot of your settings may be the best way to go.

Sorry, I'm thinking I wasn't very clear. ;)

I'm the owner of the group, and I have only one account.?I have my subscription set to "Full Featured Digest". Yet every time someone posts, I get an email as if I am set to "Individual Messages".? No one else is having this problem.

Obviously I have two email addresses - my owner address ([email protected]) and my regular email address (soandso@...). So I am wondering if this has something to do with me being the owner as opposed to a regular subscriber and whether the settings are different for one vs. the other.?

This capability was taken away after spammers "found" groups.io and things started to get out of hand. Letting spammers use groups.io as a means to get their messages out is a very undesirable situation for everyone. Forcing group owners to select at least one of the Spam Control settings seemed like a small price to pay to avoid getting the whole domain blacklisted.

If you don't want to do any moderating it might be a little easier to make the group Restricted and just approve the applicants instead of their messages. Your mileage may vary.

Bruce

Bruce,

?

Great info.? Thanks.? In Yahoo, my files = 0, Photo Albums = 106mgb, and there is only 1 photo in that Photomatic¡± thing so I should be OK with the 1gb .IO limit on the free plan (will be upgrading to Premium once the Board confirms IO as a replacement for Yahoo).

Thanks for the guideline.? but have one dumb question.? How pray tell does one check ones file and photo allocations for size in Yahoo?

Go to your Yahoo group logged on as Owner. If you open the Files area there should be a line at the top that says "using xxx bytes of maximum yyyMB" (or whatever). Now click on Photos and open the Albums, where you should see a similar line. To be safe, also do this for the Photomatic section (I really am not sure what this even means). To my knowledge only the Files and the Photos in Albums are transferred; so add these numbers up and you should have a reasonably close estimate.?

I believe Yahoo limits are 100 MB for files and 100 GB for photos. Groups.io limits depend on what plan you are on; free groups are limited to 1 GB total. If you have a lot of big photos in your group you could easily end up over your allocation. See /static/pricing

Another thing to look into:? If you establish a maximum size of photos in photo albums in groups.io, larger photos will be rescaled during the transfer and that may help you remain under the limit.?I suggest that 1024x1024 should be adequate for viewing online; those subscribers with a real need to share print-quality images can always upload them to cloud storage and send a link instead. See Admin->Settings->Features->Photos->Max Size in Photos Section.?

Hope this helps,
Bruce?

Re: Rename Group didn't work

Hi, Bruce;

Yes, you have been HIGHLY HELPFUL, and I THANK YOU for your efforts!? I will attempt to re-name my little group soon, but before I do this, I must ask the users for assistance or suggestions on what the new name should be.

Again, THANKS for your clear and complete suggestions, Bruce.? I have not yet followed the link that you had also added in your reply to me, but I will as soon as I complete this note to you.

The way you're doing it, that person will never have a message moderated.? If a problem such as a flame war comes up, you'd have to change each member to keep them from posting.? A better way is to go to your group settings, scroll down to the Spam Control section, and turn off the New Users Moderated box.? If you don't require approval to join the group (first box), you won't be able to turn it off since at least one box in that section must be checked.? If you leave the New Users Moderated box checked, just change the value below it to 1.? Then you'd need to approve the first post from each person, but only once.? By using the New Users Moderated choice, they'll revert to the group setting based on the Moderated box, so no further moderation unless you turn that on later.

If you have 2 accounts, one for owner and one for member, then each will have separate settings on the Subscription page.
