question about the feature "activity"

Hi,

I cannot find a distinction between "Member Activity" and "Moderator Activity". When I choose "Member Activity", I get activities both of "normal" members but also the ones of moderators, although there is an extra feature for "Moderator Activity". So I do not understand why both activities are mixed together in "Member Activity". I know I can check one person?s history under his subscription, but that?s not what I want.

I?d like to have a clear distiction between "Member Activity" and "Moderator Activity". "Member Activity" should show activities of all members during the complete time of the group?s existence. This was an extremely practical feature in yg, for you could find at one glance who applied, joined and unsubscribed within the last few months. In groups.io I cannot find this feature, but I might have overseen it. So far I see all activites (of members and moderators) mingled together, and this makes this kind of search quite difficult.

Example: If I choose "Member Activity", I get hundreds of activities of moderators (file updating and changing, message sending, photo editing, etc.) and the ones of members somewhere in between. In the pulldown menue under "Actions", I can only select one action at a time, such as "applied for membership" but not the complete history of all members applications, unsubscriptions, mail address changes of the past months or years on one page (unless I am missing s. th..).

I hope I could make clear what I mean.

Thanks
Victoria

Re: Failure To Communicate

John,

1. Much of the 'impatience' would have been avoided had a simple
notice that "Pending transfer requests will be on hold until
approximately May 4th due to staff vacation" been posted as a sticky
on the GroupManagersForum and on the Transfer Request page. Properly
setting expectations up front avoids many upsets.
Regarding the Transfer instructions page you might wish to post that suggestion in beta. Mark's notice in beta mentioned a delay in transfers, but it wasn't clear that "delay" would mean "until his return".

2. Similarly, I responded today to the Invitation Accepted message by
setting the groupsio ID to Moderator and then clicking the Go Ahead
button on the transfer page; However, the transfer web page gave no
response to the click of the button, and the "action required"
message still shows in the drop-down box for the pending transfer.
So I'm not sure that clicking the "Go Ahead" button actually
notified anyone.
Sounds like something to report to [email protected] - hopefully others who've experienced that oddity will do so also.

Re: Transfer member not in member list? #importingdata

John Perry

Duh! How stupid of me! I went to the Yahoo forums and everything is ok now. I'm just waiting on the transfer to happen now. Thanks!

Re: owner getting every message posted

It MIGHT, but in my case, my .io group is brand new.? (So this very good idea does not apply...)

I believe that you have all else as OK and correct.

Re: error when beginning transfer

Pam,

As well, when I look at the pending transfers, the other four say
"completed'. These two say they are waiting on action from me. Having
already tried to go ahead a dozen times or more, maybe this is an
issue for support?
Gmail's spam filter is pretty good, but you might want to check your Spam folder anyway just to make sure any messages from the Transfer agent didn't land there.

Too, if you've got a tabbed Inbox, I suppose you might check Social and Promotions just in case.

Re: owner getting every message posted

Alex,

Does that (have to manually set posting rights to all new members) ...
No, that was a misunderstanding. The New Users Moderated mechanism automatically changes the member's Posting Privilege to "Default group policy" as soon as the required number of approvals has been made.

even apply to members migrated over from yahoogroups? I thought their
rights migrate with them.
Theirs do, but Y!Groups similar feature works differently. Those members copy over with their Posting Privilege set to "Override: moderated" (not new user moderated). Their privilege will not change automatically, if you want to take one of them off moderation you'll have to do that manually.

My recommendation is to change him/her to "Default group policy" so that you retain the ability to moderate the group as a whole in the event of a flame war or other disturbance. I suggest that "Override: not moderated" never be used, or used for only the most trusted of members/moderators.

Re: How does one *split* a topic?

Brian,

I have my display order to show newest messages first, so in
reality that message was the most recently posted at the end of the
thread.
Then you've stepped square on the bug Duane warned of (his item 2). The most recent message cannot be split from the rest with the sort order flipped that way. It's a stupid bug, but it is still there.

What I want is that first message to be split off as a topic
of its own, with a new title, while all the earlier messages in the
existing topic, continue as a single topic with the original title.
You'll need to flip your view order before you can split it from the earlier messages.

Re: SOME HELP FOR THOSE UNDERGOING A TRANSFER

Dan,

In Yahoo, my files = 0, Photo Albums = 106mgb, ...
Be aware that the size reported for Photo Albums in Y!Groups includes attachments. But attachments aren't copied by the transfer agent.

I've also have a Y!group where the usage reported for photos is grossly in error (1.7 GB actual, but 235 MB reported).

So take the numbers with a grain of salt.

and there is only 1 photo in that Photomatic¡± thing ...
That's a collection of albums formed from photos attached to messages (rather than uploaded). Each message with attached photos creates a new photomatic album that contains the images from that message.

? ? ? ? ? I have my display order to show newest messages first, so in reality that message was the most recently posted at the end of the thread.? The split function on groups.io is far less obvious than it is on another forum on which I moderate.? There one selects a message, or messages, via checkboxes that appear near the upper left where our message numbers do.? ?I will often split off a couple of messages that really deserve to be a topic of their own, and can do this from anywhere in the existing thread, including skipping posts [one can check non-contiguous messages].

? ? ? ? ? If sort order is having this effect then I think that's a bug.

Normally, you would set default mail delivery information for the group at Admin->Settings->Default Sub Setting (button at the top of the settings page). Everyone who subsequently joins the group will get this setting, which they can override through either the Subscription menu or by sending one of the standard listserv-type commands (see /static/help#emailcommands).

When transferring from Yahoo, email delivery preferences migrate with each user record. So much for email delivery...

What Mike is doing is entirely different. If I understand correctly, he is setting Posting Privileges (not to be confused with email delivery preferences), one by one for each member, using the override commands at the bottom of each subscriber record. This does not affect mail delivery, but instead whether that person's posts are/are not moderated, or even allowed. I do not recommend this. It's not the intended use of those fields, but more than that, it's way too much work to maintain. Set your group moderation policy in the group settings, and save these checkboxes for special cases.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Re: How does one *split* a topic?

Brian,

When I hit the "More" at the bottom of the first message in the
thread I want to split, this is what I get:
In your screen shot it looks like that's the first message of the topic. In which case there are no prior messages to split it from (which is why the menu item doesn't appear for the first messages).

Re: owner getting every message posted

Pete,

Good thinking, but, no dice. They're going to, and coming from. the
main group.
Do the individual emails have the standard group footer at the bottom?

If so then the only way I can imagine that happening is that you have a second subscription to the group under a different email address (different than the one whose settings you showed).

If not, then they are coming to you by some other means. Maybe the members are CCing their messages to you as well as sending them To the group. Possibly they are sending them to the group's +owner address instead of or in addition to the group's posting address - I've occasionally seen that confusion.

In Gmail's interface you can select "Show original" to get a wealth of information about how the message came to you. If reading email headers is not your joy feel free to send an example (copy of the Show original) to me off-list.

One more thing to try before you contact support.? Try changing your delivery to something else, save it, then change it back.? Maybe something got out of sync.? If that does it, you may still want to contact support and report what happened so Mark can look into it.

Re: How does one *split* a topic?

You'll need to go into the topic/thread.? Then use the More menu at the bottom of the post where you want the split to occur.? One of the items on the menu is Split.? Clicking on that will open a box asking for the subject of the new thread.

There are a couple of things to be aware of. 1)? All posts after the one you split will go with it.? You could then split off again to a temporary topic, which you could merge back into the original.? 2)? If you sort with newest at the top, you won't be able to split the top/last reply.? You'd need to revert to oldest first so it would be at the bottom for it to be split-able.? Mark is aware of this, but hasn't patched it yet.

It can get complicated and confusing quickly, so I use it very sparingly.

How does one *split* a topic?

Brian Vogel

The need to do this hasn't arisen often, but it does arise.

I am quite familiar with the merge feature on groups.io, but I don't see any explicit function that allows you to split a post (or series of posts) contained in an existing topic off into a new topic of their own, usually assigning a new topic title as part of the process.

Hi Mike.

You wrote...
"It may be that your service is set to permit postings by individuals, but only after the first message has been moderated.? I am in this situation, also.? -When a new person joins, I must manually allow this person to post."

Humm. Does that (have to manually set posting rights to all new members) even apply to members migrated over from yahoogroups? I thought their rights migrate with them.

Re: owner getting every message posted

Bruce's mention of subgroups got me to thinking (and it didn't hurt too much!)? Each group and subgroup should have a subscription setting for you to choose.? Are the messages you've been getting from the main group, a subgroup, or both?? Sort of a last ditch effort, but that's the only thing I can think of.
