Either I edited the Topic or merged messages from another Topic under this one, and I changed both the subgroup and corresponding #hashtag spelling from "docuwiki" to "dokuwiki".

Current Topic:?

CiviHosting offers migration to DokuWiki?

#wikispaces?

#export?

?

#dokuwiki?

?

#civihosting?

Subject in reply:
Re: [docuwiki] CiviHosting offers migration to DokuWiki #wikispaces #export #docuwiki #CiviHosting

It appears that the reply subject is derived from the original Topic and subgroup name [docuwiki] before the changes[dokuwiki]. I'm not sure this is necessarily a bad thing; for email subscribers keeping messages in a thread, it would keep them altogether under the original subject. However, if they have only the latest message and wish to look up the discussion on the website, the current Topic may be unrecognisable. Of course, the link in the email footer would take them to the right message regardless of the Topic (I hope).

Re: Change the initial "Thank you for your interest..." email

Hi Shal,

?

Thanks for the reply and the explanation of how the initial emails work.??I do have some suggestions/comments.??I¡¯ll express part of them here, and leave the rest for the beta group.

?

The wording of the default message is misleading/wrong and should be corrected.??It says ¡°¡reply to this email to confirm your email address and activate your membership.¡±??That is great, unless your group, as many are, requires moderator approval.??The reply does not ¡°activate¡± their membership.??This is misleading the user, and likely at a time when they are new to Groups.io, leaving them asking why their membership did not get activated.??To me this is not something that is a ¡°let¡¯s consider for the next release,¡± but an error which should be fixed.

?

If they do ¡°reply¡± to the initial email they get a response that says ¡°If any of the groups you subscribed to require approval before joining, you will be notified when that happens.¡±???That assumes they understand the difference between ¡°confirmed¡± and ¡°approved.¡±??Which I would submit is not very likely for someone new to Groups.io.

?

If the click on the ¡°Confirm account¡± link, they are taken to the confirmed page, but they still need to be approved, and there is nothing on that page about the approval process.??Then if you click on the group you just joined, it takes you to their ¡°home¡± page, but still says nothing about the approval process.??Only when you click on one of the side tabs do you get the ¡°Your subscription has not yet been approved.¡± message.

?

The system knows the group requires approval, and the messages sent to the user should reflect the fact that a moderator has to approve the account.??Why not customize the messages to reflect what the end user needs to know???Something like:??

?

The group you have requested to join requires a moderator to approve the membership.??While you are waiting for that approval, please confirm your email address by replying to this message, or use the Confirm Account link to?set up a password, and choose other subscription settings.??Once the moderator has approved your account, you will receive an email notification.

?

For what it is worth,

Tom

A topic is a collection of messages. Each topic begins with a message, and then includes any replies to that initial message, and replies to the replies, and so on. All messages are part of a topic, but (usually) not all of them start new topics.

We're using this a bit differently that most folks - nearly all of our posts are one-time messages.

?So in your case most topics have a single message in them.

If the 'search' button doesn't appear at the top, then the menu from the 'more' button on the bottom isn't what you show.

That makes sense. It means you don't have edit permission, and may not have permission to use some of the other items (the menu screenshot I pasted was for an owner). Only moderators or owners can edit the Topic (meaning the subject and topic options like "locked" or "moderated"). Members can edit the content of their own messages (the message body), if the group hasn't turned that option off.

How do I change the "edit archives" privilege?

As an owner, or a moderator with the Set Moderator Privileges permission, you can check the Edit Archives box in the Moderator Permissions section of the membership page for each moderator. Owners always have all permissions, and don't have the list of permissions checkboxes.

Linkedin spams every email address in every new sucker's address book. So do other "social networks". It's how Facebook got so big - by spamming.

Re: Invitation to +owner to connect on Linkedin

Marina,

? Linkedin is simply a different form of spam.? And the people who are
the source of it (your members who are on Linkedin) do not know how
they are being 'used' by Linkedin.? My advice is "simply ignore".? Always.

? There is a "Catch-22" about growing your group (getting new members).

? If you "open up" you also expose yourself or the group to unwanted spam
and other such things.? Please note - the 'purpose' of the group is usually
not used by spammers to 'target' their spam - they could care less and
will simply send it ... and "it" can be highly objectionable - or it can be
relatively innocuous.
? Yes, there are also spammers who are targeting - for instance if you
join a group about dealing with a particular disease it is amazing how
quickly you start receiving spam about the disease (or general?
health topics).? Targeting spammers are simply trying to increase
their 'hit rate' (how often someone clicks thru - which is how they
get paid).??

? On the other hand - if you "close down" the growth rate goes WAY down.

? Many groups use "by invitation only" and that is fine and does help.
But if your goal is to get 'more members' then it won't work for you.
Other groups have very specific interests - and rely upon word of
mouth for others with the same interests to "find them".? But those
groups always have very active moderators and always set up the
group to be "moderated until a certain number of posts have been
approved".

You can't. Like Y!G...and pretty much everywhere else...logins do expire eventually.

You will also find yourself logged out if you try to access groups.io with a different browser, a different device, or if you delete your browser cookies.

Hope this helps,

It's just a spammer. It's not that hard to mine groups.io for legitimate addresses. If group "abc" is in the groups.io directory, then by definition abc(plus)owner(at)groups(dot)io is a legitimate email address. Nothing to see here.

And am I logged into a single Group site or Groups.io in general.
I was able to post here because I had already logged back in to one of my groups.

LinkedIn is one of those annoying sites that seems to use a person's address book to send out "spam".? Based on my experience, it does seem to be one of the few that will honor the unsubscribe link in the email.

Invitation to +owner to connect on Linkedin

I have set my +owner address to receive all mails so that prospective members can contact me as the group owner even if they are not subscribed yet.
Everything worked fine but in the last days I have received twice to the address +owner an invitation to connect to a person on Linkedin.

This person is unknown to me, she is not a member of my group (at least, with the name shown in the invitation) and I am not on Linkedin with the +owner address. How is this possible?

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Re: Accuracy of Yahoo Member List Export? #addmembers

Thanks for the link to the Chrome app for downloading more data fields from Y! group membership.? I'm still curious why the "First Name" and "Last Name" fields shown in the Y! group list aren't included in either of the exports.?
I think I'll update the "Direct Add" wiki page I created to include the link to the chrome app.
I had never cleared "bouncing" members from the Y! group, so I did that prior to initiating the transfer, though I did take an export that included them.? If that will create any kind of an issue during the "easy transfer" of old Y! group content, I could temporarily "Direct Add" them here.
Also, Kudos for making server responses for email non-delivery available - it made my explanation to those affected more convincing.

I am owner of a Yahoo Group that has nearly 600 members. We want to move the group here. I have joined Groups.io, created a group and am following the steps to have the group transferred to this site.

How long will this process take? I sent the invitation to the transfer email several days ago.

Thanks,

Nancy,

Re: [GMF] how can I edit messages?

If you want to edit the message content use the More menu, in the bar below the message:

The button you identified is to edit the Topic's subject and properties:

The settings appear to be the same in both groups and my privileges are also the same in both.? One group allows me to edit the messages and the other doesn't.? What am I missing?

In the latter group you appear to be lacking moderator privileges, or perhaps just the
Edit Archives privilege. I don't know any other reason a moderator would not be able to edit the topic.

Re: Reply Vs Reply-all

Dan,

Can someone give me some guidance here on how to set things up so that members can choose on a message by message basis which group of people their reply should go to?

Posting from the group's Messages section, with the group's Reply To option set to Group, and without removing the other options...

After the member clicks Reply on a message there will appear beneath the message composition box both a green Reply to Group button and a grey Private button:

Clicking the Private button changes the destination of the reply and also inserts the word Private: in the subject line:

I recommend checking the BCC Me box, otherwise you won't have a record of the message you sent privately.

Notably this method does not reveal to you, making the reply, the email address of the member who posted the original member. But it does reveal to that member your address, in the From field of the private reply. So that member may reply to you off-list if they choose.

I don't think there is any difference for those members replying via their email
when you opt to remove the other options. There the Reply functionality is entirely in the behavior of their email interface.

Re: Accuracy of Yahoo Member List Export? #addmembers

John,

I am seeing evidence that in some cases with multiple email addresses
known to the Y! group, the email address that Y! gave me in the export
was not the email address that the Y! group was set to deliver group
messages to.
In the export provided in the Manage Members feature only the second column contains subscription addresses. The first column may contain email addresses, but those are the member's sign-in ID, which is not necessarily the same as their subscription email address. You should disregard any email addresses from the first column.

If so, is there any chance that the "Easy Group Transfer" function
will be able to transfer the Y! group email addresses that were active
delivery addresses in cases of multiple addresses known to the Y!
group?
The transfer agent will only use the proper subscription addresses. It will also skip any of those addresses which have "Bouncing" status.

To emulate that with an export you'd have to also export the Bouncing list, and remove from the complete list those email addresses that appear also in the Bouncing list. What I did in Excel was use a second sheet in the file to hold the Bouncing list, then put a Match() function in a spare column of the full list to identify which are also in the Bouncing list. Then filtering or sorting on that matching column separates out the non-bouncing addresses.

Or... Use the Chrome app to export your Y!Group's member's list. This produces more comprehensive information about each membership, and in particular includes a column that identifies whether the address is bouncing or not. The transfer agent uses access similar to the Chrome app.

Also, FYI, yesterday a large number of @yahoo.com email addresses were
listed in Activity as "bouncing", when quite a few messages had
seemingly been delivered to them properly prior to that. I'm assuming
this is further evidence of Y! mail issues.
I don't use Yahoo Mail (for aught but testing), but I've read others commenting about problems with their account, even sending direct from one Yahoo Mail address to another.
