That's the default for new members, but each person can change it to whatever they want.? I'd hope that date format would work the same.

Hi Shai,

But I thought this was a Group option. Set by Owner/Moderator - not an individual? And I certainly would wish to set the Group's date and time format not have individuals set their own. Me thinks chaos would ensue from this idea - or am I missing something?

Inviting a new member to my group

Can anyone tell me how I can invite someone to join my group?

Re: Visibility

Michel,

I can't switch back to publicly viewable messages.?
The rss feed for a group only seems to work when the group is set to publicly viewable messages.?
Using an rss reader with the users email address and password for the group does not allow the retrieval of the rss feed.

All three are true statements. Do you have a question?

Re: Posts showing "Edited" when they were not edited

Ken,

Is replying to your own post considered as editing it?

No.

I posted a message yesterday and today I replied to it and both posts have the "Edited" flag. Neither was edited.

That seems odd.

Are you sure they weren't? A moderator of the group could have edited them.

If they were edited there will be more than just an Edited flag, there will also be a revision history of who and when.

For example see this message [#7607] in GMF:

Clicking that blue Edited badge on the right brings up a revision history:

Clicking the blue Compare Revisions button will even highlight the changes for you:

The green shading and underscore indicates an insertion. A deletion would be marked by a red shading and strike through.

If you are a moderator of the group there will also be evidence of the edit in the group's Activity log.

Re: Is there a way to keep a member's email from showing up on the member's list?

Bruce,

Subscribers can also create an email alias in their account settings. ...Here they can add their obfuscating address, if they want.

The email alias is not for the purpose of obfuscation. In fact, only the sender will ever know that the alias was used. The emails sent out to group members will contain the posting member's subscription address, not the alias.

The reason has to do with the original purpose of the feature: to cope with email systems where the outgoing address differs somewhat from the receive address. Those situations are rare now, but still happen with some email services. For example:

user @ ? <-- Receiving address, also the member's subscription address
user @ ? <-- Sending alias, for a system with this odd characteristic.

None of this hides the member's email address in received messages, which still shows up in the "From" field.

Correct.

A member who posts messages cannot keep their subscription address hidden from other members; that's a feature that does not exist within Groups.io (unlike Y!Groups). Use the search word "anonymous" if you want to find a lot of discussion of the subject in beta, mostly from a few years back.

So for Mike's purpose setting up an email address which doesn't reveal the sender's identity (it isn't "fake", it has to be a working email address) is those individual's only real option.

Fortunately Gmail and other services support the ability to retrieve messages sent to such addresses into one's "primary" Inbox. In essence Gmail's web interface can act as an email client (POP/SMTP) to retrieve messages from and send messages as the other account(s).

Re: deleting Photos

Win,

I¡¯ve started deleting photos from a couple of months ago which were inserted images (oh how I wish I could select several at a time and bulk delete... lol).

Other than cluttering up the Emailed Photos album, is there a reason to bother deleting them?

An alternative is in the Message Formatting section of your group's settings: Delete Old Attachments when out of space, and then just let the site deal with them:

For what it is worth, some ideas to make it easier to delete or consolidate these repeat photos have been discussed in beta.

Re: User name is not set

Mike,

In Yahoo groups, the display name is a problem when it comes to downloading a member database. You can display the member list in what looks like a normal spreadsheet layout with 7 columns, but when you download or copy the list, the entries of members using a display name have two extra columns that other members do not;

When I export a Y!Group manage members list in CSV format I get exactly six columns:
Display Name, Email, Status, Delivery, Posting, Joined
With no misalignment caused by empty cells in the Display Name.

I think what you describe happened shortly after the Neo roll-out, but has been fixed for years (Firefox, Windows10).

Is it the same in ¡ªis the display name itself in the member database or is it ¡°aliased¡± and thus not treated as an actual cell?

There are no irregularities in the CSV produced by Groups.io.

Email, Display Name, Username, Joined, Status, Post Status, Email Delivery, Message Selection,
Auto Follow Replies, Mod Status, User Status

You can display the member list in what looks like a normal spreadsheet layout with 7 columns, but when you download or copy the list, the entries of members using a display name have two extra columns that other members do not; the display names are aliased in, so to speak. So a normal, no-display-name data row has 7 cells, while a data row with a display name has 9 cells. Naturally, this wreaks havoc with any spreadsheet you copy the list into, such as Excel or Word.

Is it the same in groups.io¡ªis the display name itself in the member database or is it ¡°aliased¡± and thus not treated as an actual cell?

Am I explaining this well?

Each person's account has a "user name" and a "display name." Neither is all that significant for actually participating in GIO, as the email address is the user ID.

If the user creates a profile or fills out the proper fields in their account they have the option of populating a "display name." I believe that if they post to the group, sometimes a display name is also taken from their message header and populated automatically.

What I did in my group was go through all these entries in the Member List and populate these names for them, just so I could keep track of what email address goes with what person. For my particular group, this is necessary, as membership in the parent organization is required for membership in the GIO group, and otherwise it's difficult to keep track of who to boot when they let their membership expire. Other group owners consider this a terrible faux pas and a breach of subscriber's "right to internet anonymity" (whatever that means).?What you do with your group is up to you. It IS your group, after all.

I feel your pain, especially with all those miniature sig-line images that some folks can't seem to do without.

As if the one-by-one process of deleting such photos isn't annoying enough, due to browser caching I often find it necessary to refresh the screen between deletions so my next click will select the right photo. So no, it's nothing unique to your setup.

It depends. If you feel you have a good grasp of the process, the sooner you get them in the queue the faster they will be transferred. However, there may be some advantage to doing one transfer with a smaller group and working through any glitches before doing the bigger ones. That's the approach I took about three months ago and in hindsight I'm glad I did it that way.

? In the "directory" user's name can be "faked" - but it appears anyone can click and email directly to that person.
Group members cannot email others via the "directory" unless they create a group profile and enable visibility. Go to Subscription->Group Profile->Edit Group Profile->Profile Privacy to see what I mean. As group owners, we can email anybody, so that does not apply to us...but don't be confused by this. Unless the member enables it, others can't see or use the "email me" link.

Subscribers can also create an email alias in their account settings. They need to click on their name at upper right and select Account. Then pull down the "Advanced Settings for Email Aliases" menu near the bottom of the resulting page. Here they can add their obfuscating address, if they want. Note that these are alternate, send-only email addresses...all group messages will still be received at the primary address.

As a group owner, it's generally a bad idea to make the Members List accessible to other group members, as Marie Alline mentioned. See Admin->Settings->Privacy->Members Visible for this. You can also completely disable the Member Directory (not the same thing) in the pull-down menu immediately above if you want.

None of this hides the member's email address in received messages, which still shows up in the "From" field. But at least through use of these various options a group member can send from one address and receive at another and only the group owner will ever know what the receiving address is.

I hope this helps, but it was probably more confusing than enlightening.

Click on any of the blue headings at the top (Name Type Size Uploaded (= Date)) and it will change the sort order. Why we can't also do this for "Uploaded By" is a mystery.

Hope this helps,
