Re: #poll Creating Polls
#poll
Marie; further to my earlier post what seems more likely is that "someone" checked the Replies by Mods Only box which is part of the "Poll" hashtag. Go to your hashtags page, and click "Edit" on your Poll hashtag and then look right down at the bottom of the page that appears.

What do other practical moderators think? This risks getting me burnt at the stake for heresy but here goes... I find myself wondering just how useful hashtags actually are. On the Group I moderate* (no subgroups BTW) we have a few "Moderators Only" hashtags, but providing some for members to use is under consideration. As a preparatory move I set up a poll yesterday to try to establish exactly how our members use our Group, and perhaps by extension how they use Groups.io. Now it's far too soon to conclude what the final result will be but the very early indication is that the majority of members** only use the web UI occasionally or less, right down to "never" because they rely solely on emails. Look at a web UI with hastags; their presence is unmissable because they can be quite eye - grabbing; OTOH anyone using an email UI will find a (small) #hashtag in the subject line of the email, but only if they either look for it or spot it by chance - the body of the email may give no clue that the subject of the email is hashtagged. I will go as far as to suggest that unless you actually know how your members are accessing Groups.io, worrying about the use of hashtags and subgroups inheriting those from a main group by default (or not) may be pointless. If your hashtags are for members' use (and not just moderators) then if they use email access either mainly or exclusively then they will have no way of adding them; they would have to log in and use the web UI and for reasons I do not understand there is evidence that (our) members just don't do that. FWIW I find that rather annoying... * 2900 members ** 78% at the time of writing - 0820 GMT, but on an annoying low turn - out. Regards, Chris. |
hashtags for subgroups
#hashtags
#subgroups
I had assumed, perhaps naively, that the hashtags for a parent group would be inherited by the parent's subgroups. Apparently not. This does not make sense to me, but I have a mental model of subgroups based on years of programming C++ subclasses.
I'm left wondering if anyone else thinks a subgroup should inherit the hashtags of its parent. Theoretically, I say yes, but that's not necessarily practical. What do other practical moderators think? Best, Marv Waschke |
Re: Gmail apps alias unable to send
Michael,
I joined our little group using my burning man name. However, I cannot post to the list from that name, ... I'm a little confused by your description. You ought to be able to post from the email address which is subscribed to the group. ... because when I'm logged in to my gmail account mbergen but changeThat shouldn't matter, I think, if Gmail is putting your burning man name in as the From that's what should match your group subscription and allow you to post. and group.io will only allow me to post from my mbergen account. And that's where I get confused. If you joined under your burning man name Groups.io shouldn't accept mbergen. Well, part of the answer may be the fact that you're posting in this group with that name. Are you sure you didn't join the little group with the mbergan address and not the burning man name? Anyway, here's how it works: When you join a Groups.io group you subscribe with a particular email address, and that is the address where group messages are sent. You can also post from that address (subject to the rules of the group, of course). You can have a second address to post from by entering it as an Email Alias. That's found on the Login page of your Groups.io account. But this alias address is "post only" - group messages are never sent there. A second option, if you wish to receive group messages at both addresses, is to have a second account and second subscription under that second address. Gmail apps alias unable to send
My domain is hosted by Google Apps, mostly so I can use gmail. However, along with my name I have a number of aliases which I use for various mailing lists, social media sites, etc.? My Burning Man group is transitioning to , starting with our organizing committee. I joined our little group using my burning man name. However, I cannot post to the list from that name, because when I'm logged in to my gmail account (mbergen@...) but change the "from" line in Gmail, the header says "mbergen is sending as othername." and will only allow me to post from my mbergen account. Is this a fixable issue? We want to extend to our much larger group, and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who's email is setup this way. Thanks!?

Re: Two Groups Merged During Transfer from Yahoo

This needs to be reported to [email protected] . Mark is the one to straighten this out.

I'm going to take a guess that this transfer may have been started before the "Start New Transfer" button on the Yahoo Transfer page was instituted. Part of the reason for using the new form was to try to keep those things straight where Y! groups were transferring to groups.io but the group name had already been taken by someone else. But the form provides a double check on source and destination for other transfers as well. Seeing some of the twists and oddities he's dealing with, I completely agree that Mark needs a little vacation. And somehow he manages all this with outward patience and calm. He's a far greater man than I am... Dano ----- Original Message -----
During a transfer yesterday of members and files to new group from Yahoo, they somehow were merged into an already existing group instead of the intended one. How did this happen, how do I prevent it in the future and how do I correct this error? The new group to which the members and files should have gone is Pacificon.groups.io. The group they all went to by mistake is MDARCTech.groups.io. The members and files came from Pacificon.yahoo.com. Thankx for the help, Mike |
Re: Use of more than one address
Hi Loopy,
Can I add a 2nd email address?Yes and no. You can of course hold two subscriptions in your group, each under its own email address, and both as owner. But those then are separate accounts in Groups.io; you can't do what I think you're asking: manage more than one subscription address within a single Groups.io account - as you could with Y!Groups. I am the owner of a small group but I need to be able to keep in touchI think it is always a good idea to have more than one owner in a group; even if they're both you at different addresses. When I do that I make sure the two addresses are from different companies - so I'm less likely to have both addresses out of service at the same time. Re: Modified Message-IDs as a Gmail work-around
jonathon,
Looking at it from a citation/legal POV, is the original Message-IDIt is placed in a field named "X-Orig-Message-Id". I am aware that Message-IDs are, in theory, non-unique.Actually email senders are admonished to ensure that they are unique across all of space and time. Ok, that's a bit overstated, but it is the idea. Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |

Mike,
During a transfer yesterday of members and files to new group fromOops. How did this happen, how do I prevent it in the futureWhen you set up the transfer you select the target group from a drop-list of groups in which you have owner role. Maybe you somehow slipped with that control before hitting the "Start group Transfer Process" button? and how do I correct this error?Deleting all the improperly copied content by hand won't be easy. I'd write to [email protected] to see if they can undo it for you. Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |
