Thanks J_Catlady in #6537,
I must be mistaken. I made an edit and deleted a second message from me in the same thread.
When I looked for the original message on the WEBsite, it was replaced with a newer timed one
and the original one was gone.
I'll go back and look for the edited message and look for the edit badge IIRC.
Rick

Re: File download count

Not for us mere mortals.? I'm sure Mark could get the information from log files.? It won't hurt to ask about having that feature added on the beta group, the official suggestion box for the site.

Re: Optional Message while adding Members

Richard,

When I am doing an Invite does the Optional message replace the
Standard Message?
As Frances said, the name gets filled in automatically (the placeholder is there because you may be inviting more than one person at a time), and your text is inserted into the standard text.

I did manage to add my Optional message to the standard, but still
could not edit the standard. As a result, it looked dumb.
What I do is surround my message with horizontal lines to make it clearly distinct from the Groups.io text. See:

File download count

I've looked, but have not spotted a way to tell how many times a file has been downloaded.? Is there a way to do that?

Bruce,

No, the members came along successfully as part of the transfer. I think it was just the luck of the draw as to how bad Yahoo was misbehaving at the time.

Re: Tansfer complete without calendar #calendar

Norm,

But I just discovered that calendar events are not transferred.

Any ideas about best practices to get them from Yahoo?
I just did it event by event, with two browser windows. One open on the Yahoo Group editing each event, and one on the Groups.io group creating each event. The edit on each Y!Group event was primarily to be able to see all the event fields, but I also deleted the reminders as I went. That's optional of course, but since I did not remove the Y!Group members I didn't want those being mailed out and causing confusion.

Tedious going. I did it a month or two per session, making sure to keep ahead of the current month.

The invitee¡¯s name is automatically added.?

Any other text text you add is inserted to the message. You can see what you type in the bottom box (additions) appear in the top box - the invitation.?

Re: Groups.io site updates #changelog

Chris,

I am stuck at the moment because I am still waiting for a copy of the
new message to members who find themselves cast into the outer
darkness; until I get it I cannot add it to the work-in-progress wiki.
Anyone in the process of transferring a group or planning a transfer is encouraged to add a test email address to their Yahoo Group so that they get a copy of that message - and then post it here (or in the wiki) for reference.

Or off-list to me if you don't want to publicize the any private info in the message and don't want to redact it yourself.

IMHO an awful lot of of the queries that arise could be prevented if
the Help section had more information in it. I know that is easy to
say, but that doesn't stop it being true.
Not that you haven't already stepped up above and beyond the call, but that's the origin of the GMF Wiki version of the help page (paraphrasing): If you write it, Mark might copy.

Optional Message while adding Members

I cannot edit the standard message, such as being able to put the person¡¯s name in the brackets. I did manage to add my Optional message to the standard, but still could not edit the standard. As a result, it looked dumb.

Re: photo albums

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Members in our group are allowed to have their own albums.

?

After my group transferred there were lots of albums that had no name on them, along with all the pictures in them. All of these albums had my name on them, and I know at least one album belonged to a current member. Just recently I noticed some albums have my name on them, but the pictures inside the albums have the owner¡¯s name on them. I think the only way to sort this problem out is to have the album owner create a new album, download their pictures out of the album, then upload their pictures into the new album. Finally, have a moderator or owner delete the old album.

I see now under the photo albums I have a name for every member and then my name appears under every one of them. I am the only one who puts photos in the albums.
My members dont know how to do it and I do it for all of them. Is there a way to take my name off the albums of all of the members? I really dont like this feature for my group.

Anita

Re: photo albums

Anita -- I edited my own member record in my group and changed my Display Name to a couple of spaces. As a result, my ownership information automagically disappeared from the display of my two Photo Albums.

If I didn't put in any spaces and left it entirely blank it displayed my email address instead.

Not sure if this is the perfect solution to your problem but it does work.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Re: photo albums

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Bruce I didn't request this and really see no reason for it.
?
It has the members name and then my name under it which I don't like or feel necessary.
?
So wish there would be a setting where you can undo this.

Displaying album ownership is a new feature that I requested. See?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/6525

You could rename the folders so the member's name is also displayed. I don't know of a way to remove your name as the owner.

One weirdness (which I hesitate to call a bug, although I've considered emailing Mark about it) is that when you reply via the web to a thread with a changed subject, either by splitting or some other means, the original title appears at the top of your reply. The more I think about this, the more I think it's a bug. But I haven't thought it through 100% yet. It is certainly annoying and disconcerting.

Re: Groups.io icon - SVG format -- is there one?

Gerald Boutin

My suggestion of using an online image conversion site turned out to be a very poor idea. It appears that most, if not all, of the online sites use the same CAD program that embeds a watermark into the resultant image. A sort of ransomware, I guess.

Perhaps an svg file isn't really necessary and the png file (?/img/org.1/mainlogo.png?) would be sufficient.

The logo originated in a contest at 99designs. Clicking through to their
site I don't see any ability for us (the public) to download the image
in any form. Which makes sense, only the owner of the image should have
that ability.

It seems likely to me that only Mark has access to any quality better
than what you find on the site's pages.

One of my groups is for technical help.? We sometimes edit posts to correct errors, such as a part number, so that someone searching later doesn't find bad information that leads them on a wild goose chase.? I believe that's the most common type of usage.

Re: Is there a way to move posts from one topic to another? #moderation

Rick,

Having said all that, the way the WEB site can and does change the old
messages dynamically and in real-time (like adding your picture to ALL
messages later, in hindsight,) is very cool...
Notably that example is a change to the metadata about the message, not a change to the message content itself.

Message content changes only through explicit edits to the content. Either by the posting member him/herself (if allowed by the group) or by a moderator.

And when a post has been edited, it gains an Edited badge next to its posting date. Clicking that badge takes you to a list of revisions. As J said, prior revisions must be explicitly deleted else they stay there and one can use the compare function to see what was changed.

I've done the multiple memberships with different permissions for Years. (At Y!)

Moving on... (About editing.)
In 1989, FDR (First Data Resources) a major Credit Card Processor experimented
with allowing merchants to edit transactions "after the fact" but before their batch closings
were sent -- generally at close of business for the day.
It created chaos and confusion (mistakes happened before or after) and allowed fraud.
Nothing was trackable.

QuickBooks (by Intuit) allowed similar edits 'Company File wide' (which is reasonable)
but allowed the audit trail file to be turned off. (So no record of who did what or when.)
It is unlikely they did CC merchant accounts at that time so that is unrelated.
(I was an Online-Banking Beta Tester, Nebula ver5 all the way to last build 93. 1996)
(I'm in EasterEgg.)

Getting back to how this relates to Group actions:
Allowing edits with no re-sends is a slippery slope. (The above samples are very condensed.)
I like the warning normal Group members get that re-sends are going to be done and to
not abuse that feature. (And how the WEB archives auto deletes the original message.)

Having said all that, the way the WEB site can and does change the old messages
dynamically and in real-time (like adding your picture to ALL messages later, in hindsight,)
is very cool...
