Re: Calender

I think it's important to note the difference between "Reminders" and "Notifications".? ?In general, I find the "Add Reminder" button to be by far the most flexible method, as Shal suggested.?
Note that the "Send Invite to Group" if checked will send an iCal Invitation immediately upon posting your event.? While this can be helpful, it's also possible that you will receive a bunch of invitation acceptance notices, since it's not simply a notification, it's an Invite.? (I'm actually not sure where any such acceptance notices would go.)
On the other hand, the "Send Notice to Group when Event Happens" button will send a notice (if I understand correctly) at the time and day that the event occurs.? In our case, it's much to late to notify or even remind anyone who cares to participate.? So I generally don't see much use for this one unless someone is just down the hall and needs to be awakened to join a meeting that's just begun.
So we just do a little arithmetic and use the "Reminders" feature to send a calendar reminder at an appropriate lead time before the event, as Shal has suggested.

I do wish that there was a way to pre-set the calendar settings to a default for a group, such as automatically displaying the Week rather than the Month; having a default Reminder lead time, etc.? That was one of the good features of Yahoo - far outweighed by their constant meddling and outages!

Regards, Bill (A relatively new user/owner - just migrated our 165 member group from Yahoo last month, so still learning)

Polls can be an interesting and powerful tool per se, I see them as something different from a Topic.

?It was a separate menu item at one time.? Because it's just a 'special' form of Topic, it was incorporated into that part of the menu.

Interesting and helpful

Can a group be private and unseen by the community generally, thus only available by invitation.

If so what happens if a new "owner" tries to use the same group name?

Thanks

You need to set up your Groups.io group.

None of the group settings are copied from the Yahoo Group. Nor is the cover image, description, or other home page info.

When you start the transfer process you'll be given a form that asks for the Yahoo Group name, has a drop-list for selecting the target Groups.io group, and a list of checkboxes for what content to copy. Email attachments and Calendar events are two types of content that are excluded from that list.

Some notes about the Membership list - each member's Delivery selection (Individual, digest, etc.) and Posting Privilege (group default, Moderated, Not Moderated, etc.) will be copied along with their Join Date and email address.

One important exception: any email address that is already present in your Groups.io group will not be copied, nor will its subscription info. That means, for example, that if you use the same email address in your owner role in both groups, your "Join" date won't be copied from the Y!Group. If that's important to you then you should promote an alternate email address to owner of the Groups.io group and unsubscribe your primary address prior to starting the transfer.

Myself I didn't bother to be concerned about my join date, nor did any of the Y!Group moderators who I had invited to join the Groups.io group and become familiar with it before we initiated the transfer. We spent a couple weeks exploring the Groups.io group and how its settings work before transferring over the Yahoo Group. Of particular interest are the Member Notices - those play roughly the same role as the scheduled files in Yahoo Groups (notices for Pending, Welcome, Removed, Left etc.).

Your Y!Group co-owners and moderators will copy over as ordinary members. You will need to promote them and set their moderator permissions anew in the Groups.io group.

Another exception is email addresses listed as "Bouncing" in the Y!Group - they will not be copied. It is possible (likely with a group that large) that Yahoo Groups will have made mistakes in determining the Bouncing status of some email addresses. Some of those listed as "Bouncing" might actually be fine. You can invite them to the Groups.io group after the transfer if you are concerned about that.

Also, some of the email addresses not listed by Y!Groups as "Bouncing" will turn out to be bad. Those will promptly become bouncing in the Groups.io group. There's no pressing need to worry about those, the Groups.io's bounce tracking will identify them and set their status accordingly.

Re: 2 Questions

Dave,

... the most likely solution: the member just totally deleted his
Yahoo groups account.
Hmm... I seem to recall there being log entries for this case. "Left group via system" or some such.

I joined my test group with a test account, intending to test this by deleting the test account. But the test account's join doesn't show in the log (yet?). So that doesn't give me any confidence that I'd be able to tell what happened.

Too, the activity logs for Y!GMF appear to be entirely offline for me at the moment: no entries of any form. Sigh.

Yahoo wouldn't send out a 'left the group' message for a member that
no longer exists in their computers.
Maybe. But in prior days they were pretty good at logging all membership events, including removal by act of Customer Care - people who had their accounts deleted for cause (TOS violation) would show as removed in group logs.

But it has been so long since I've heard of a case where someone deliberately deleted their own Yahoo account that I can't say for sure if that was logged.

Re: question regarding 'no mail'

I find this statement very odd. I've never had a Yahoo email address, nor have
I ever had any problem accessing files, photos, etc. of groups I'm a member of
(haven't tried during the recent acess problems though). To be sure, I just
tried a couple of groups again, one I own, one I'm just a member. No problems
with either.

Migration questions

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I am the owner of the group named "betweenjobsministry".? The group has over 16000 members and handles about 400 messages a month. It is a relative "high turnover" group. About 250 members join and leave the group each month.

I am having many of the issues that have been discussed on GMF.? I have started the process to migrate to groups.io.? I am registered and accepted by groups.io.? My question is do I need to do all off the preliminary? setup as if I am setting up a new group in groups.io or will all of the set-up info (Owner, mediators, standard greeting letters, etc) are will of the set-up info come across as well?

I have lost files, logs, etc several times but YG Concierge has restored them.? I am currently waiting for them to restore one more time and then I will request a transfer.

Regards, FredJ

RSS Feed Integration Questions #integration

Michael Rickey (AF6FB)

I have a couple of questions about the RSS Feed Integration. Is there a place I can find more details? I searched the wiki, but could only find a reference to the integration.

How often does the system look for updates to the feed?
If I remove a post from my blog, will groups.io remove the topic?
If I update a post from my blog, will groups.io update the topic? Will it create a new topic?
Does the integration make local (to groups.io) copies of images? Does it reference the images from the blog URL?

Thanks in advance
