Go to ‘upgrade.’?

Some time back when I was creating my discussion group that got transferred, I had the funny idea of attaching an image of myself that was not me. I'm referring to the thumb sized images you see of Mark and Shal when you go to the web to view messages. Since I am so ugly I was going to attach an image of some handsome movie star, like Gregory Peck, but since the images are so small I felt it might be difficult for someone who does not know me to realize it was an image of Gregory Peck, and not me. So, I came up with the idea of attaching an image of someone that could not be mistaken as being me. I searched the internet and came up with an image of Arnold Scwharzzeneger in his younger years with muscles bulging and so on. After playing around with the group settings for awhile, before the group was transferred, I decided this was not a good idea and so I deleted the image. Apparently, I did not click on the button that finalizes it. I discovered it was still there and went back and make sure it was deleted about 4 days ago.

However, in attempting to see if a message I had sent to this group early this morning was approved, I went to the GMF site and looked over the messages. I discovered a message I sent to the group that has this muscle bound image of Arnold. It's pretty funny, and I am sure everyone will get a chuckle over it, and so do I, but it seems this is a feature of the IO system that might be improved. I had never expected this Arnold image to be part of messages in other groups. I had expected it to be only in the group I was creating.

It is true that one never gets such a response from Yahoo. However, a staff of only one person developing the IO system does concern me. Someone in this group asked if there were any contingency plans if this person should be unable to carry out the tasks he is doing now. There never was an answer. When I was working in State government I became aware (after applying for a job in the computer programming section, which turned out to be over my head) that this section of state government has a system that documents all programming to ensure the programs do not become black boxes. All this documentation involves other individuals besides one programmer. I think it is a time consuming process, but a necessary one, especially in state government that needs to be sure it provides continuous services to the public. My impression is that this is not being done in IO and everything depends on one individual. My impression is, also, that no one knows and understands the system that has been developed by this one individual, and changes made to correct bugs and other things may be done on the fly. It is like me writing my SPSS programs that no one understands. There is no documentation except the syntax and any comments that I may have put in the program. In a situation like this, it would be very difficult for someone to come in and keep things going should the programmer leave, for whatever reason.

In state government, where I worked, the need to cross train to keep vital functions operating was recognized. I do not see any of this happening with the IO system, but then I am not fully aware of how many other individuals are involved that could take over if this one person leaves. I have brought over one group, one that is not that significant to me. I have another group ready to go. This is an important one to me, but I am very hesitant to bring it over and delete the Yahoo group because there never has been any answer to this one member's question of whether there are any contingency plans to keep IO going. I would feel better if I knew more about the support for IO. Is it really just one person that develops and runs the essential functions of the IO system?

I agree that the activity log's utility is pretty limited; especially so with regard to private interactions between members and owner/moderators. If you have more than one person performing moderation and subscription functions things can become difficult to keep track of.

I suspect the log started out reflecting the capabilities of the GIO system at a certain point in time...as additional functionality has been added it hasn't kept up. It will someday need an overhaul and I'm pretty sure I saw some posts to that effect in the beta group.

I'd use the View Source for the messages to see what the headers have to say.? You can follow through them when it was received at various steps to determine where the delay is coming from.

Just a thought - Was your ZIP a self extracting file?? That could be considered an executable file type.

The good news is that only members will see them.? The bad news is that there's not currently a way to turn them off.

Any good mail filter will not necessary rely on the file extension as the sole basis for a trojan alert. Without going into details, it occasionally happens that the zip compression algorithm introduces a sequence of hex characters that looks like executable code. You might have more luck sending the file uncompressed.

Many people's email accounts end up spoofed and/or hijacked. So there is unlikely to be any way to whitelist yourself...otherwise the spammers would all do it.

Bottom line is that we all have to live with the occasional false alarm.

This is actually a followup on my previous question about turning off email, but I think it might deserve a new topic.
Is there any documentation on the activity log floating around? When a member complained that she had unsubscribed from email several time, I tried to find log entries to reconstruct her activity. Searching on segments of email address, I didn't find much-- her messages from the beginning of time on Y!, but no activities. No record of joining, or subscription changes, but she came in on the transfer from Y! so probably would not expect an entry for subscribing . Would switching email delivery mode show up in the activity log? Or am I not looking in the right way?

Topics of recurring group notices (positioned in the calender) suddenly show up on the frontpage beside "top hashtags". I didn?t set that. How can I avoid this happening?

Someday people will not know how to use the Hash sign as it was universally intended to be used, at least the way it was used in North America and other parts of the world.

Mark forgot to say that in the siteupdates message, but here's his original message about it:

"For premium groups, moderators can now edit member's email addresses. That works similarly to how it works when a user changes their own email address, that is, all the member's subscriptions are changed to the new email address. You cannot change to an email address that is already associated with another account. However, another improvement is that we're a little smarter about that. If the account you're trying to change to has no subscriptions or is only subscribed to updates@, we treat it like that account didn't exist."
