If in your subscription, under Advanced Preferences, your Message Selection option is set to "Following Only" it means your digest contains only the threads/hashtags you're following. I see! And that makes sense (now) to me. I'm running a bit on empty this week,? but i wonder if additional language might be needed there. If it wasn't clear to me that the advanced settings dictated what was in the digest, then chances are i'm going to be getting many many emails from members asking the same question.

I wonder if the language in advanced settings can be made clearer? It should be fool proof (with me being the fool today)

And in that case, I'm kinda preferring the "follow" mechanism is a bit buried until our userbase gets used to this as I'd hate for someone to click "follow" and then it changes their digest setting to only send them that topic? ( am i still not getting this? )

Maria,

- if you follow a thread or hashtag and you have your subscription
set to daily digest - does this mean you get BOTH individual emails
for that thread AND you also see them in digest?
No.

- why is the mechanism to follow a hashtag/thread buried in the ALL
MESSAGES section of your groups and not within the group?
I'm with Duane, I think that's an oversight in the implementation.

Ok - thanks, I'll bring it up in @beta.

You should only get one or the other, depending on your subscription settings. Anything else would be a glitch in the system.

I think you may have stumbled across an inconsistency. I would also think the links for following/muting should be on each message page. I'd ask support@ or on beta@. Chances are that Mark got sidetracked during the development of this part of the interface and forgot to carry it over to other pages. Or maybe he didn't even consider it at the time. I'm often amazed at how many things he "fixes" in a short time, so there are bound to be little things that get overlooked.

Re: How do you "follow" threads?

I have other questions about following threads/hashtags:

- if you follow a thread or hashtag and you have your subscription set to daily digest - does this mean you get BOTH individual emails for that thread AND you also see them in digest? This is unclear to me (i'm testing but was hoping someone might have an answer)

- why is the mechanism to follow a hashtag/thread buried in the ALL MESSAGES section of your groups and not within the group? In other words, if i'm reading in @beta, and i see a great thread i am interested in, why do i have to go out of @beta, go to all my groups, click on all messages, find the message, then select the follow this thread button? Doesn't that seem like a lot of work? In a typical forum, wouldn't you just click something on the message when you are in the forum itself?

Only send special notices to a select group of members?
You can do that to. You can sort the Members list by Delivery, checkmark the select members, then use the Actions menu to send them a message. This isn't a special notice, per se, but it goes to the selected members regardless of their subscription options.

When you do that you may want to change the From to the +owner address, and Bcc either "Me" or "All Moderators".

Thank you Shal! That's very helpful info.

Re: Questions about Group Transfer and settings

Maria,

1- Any advice how to handle those who are set to "No Email" or "Special
notice" in an existing Y! group? If they don't get emails but they send
emails to the group by email, what's a good way to remind them of the
new email address and new login URL?
When Mark adds them to Groups.io he sends a notification to all of them, regardless of delivery preference. So they'll get at least that much.

Should we temporarily switch them to daily digest? so they are prompted
to login and adjust their settings - we don't want that to prompt
unsubscriptions though...
Mark also copies their subscription options, so they may not need to adjust them.

or should we send them special notices from the new groups.io platform -
can we do that?
You can. That's an option in "New Topic".

Only send special notices to a select group of members?

2- Does the transfer also transfer the member's Yahoo! ID/Alias/Profile name?
Not sure. I haven't yet transferred a group, hopefully someone who has can answer.

If they don't login for a while but start replying to posts via digest
or email - what do we see as their screen name/ profile on the web
interface?
If they haven't set a Display Name in their profile yet, then Groups.io will initialize their Display name from the display portion of the From address in their email (the part in front of the <user@...>). If their message doesn't have a display part (has just the bare user@...) I'm not sure what happens, but I suspect their email address is shown.

Questions about Group Transfer and settings

Our team is planning ahead and trying to gear up for the move. A few questions:

I'm sure i'll have more questions but would love some thoughts on these.

Thank you!

Re: database columns - arrows (up/down) not doing anything

I think I'd consider it a bug. SO far, I've only used that choice for Yes/No type things, so not too critical yet.

Is that a bug?

Re: database columns - arrows (up/down) not doing anything

It sounds like you're doing it right, but it might depend on the type of data you have the column set for. It doesn't seem to sort correctly on Single Select Multiple Choice. The others that I've used do, but I haven't tried all of them.

J_catlady

It works fine in my database.

database columns - arrows (up/down) not doing anything

I'm testing databases. We have 4 rows and 5 columns. When i click the name of the column and have the arrow go up or down nothing seems to change in the database - as in the order of things.

Am i doing something wrong?

Re: How do you "follow" threads?

Thanks Shal! We have so many who expect will use mobile and I think it's a very important aspect of what groups.io will offer.

We are happy to test and test and test :)

Re: How do you "follow" threads?

Maria,

Thank you! I'm just posted on @beta about the fact that when you
follow a thread or threads you start they come into your inbox as
individual emails but lack all the usual footers and links. Not sure
why.
Me either. Sounds like a bug. Hopefully Mark will pick up on it.

You'll have that mobile interface honed yet... I don't often use the mobile interface, but I'm sure many will be glad of your efforts, even if they never know it was you.

Also noticing the mobile version doesn't let you see what you see on desktop in the subscriptions page vis-¨¤-vis hashtags and threads followed.?

Re: How do you "follow" threads?

Maria,

Is there a wiki page or can someone help me understand how you
"follow" a thread or a hashtag?
Not yet, but that's a great suggestion. The whole set of Mute and Follow features could use a clear explanation. And also some long-deferred work from Mark, but that's a separate problem.

The basic concept is that there are two ways of selecting threads. In the Advanced Preferences section of your subscription(s) either choose to receive "All Messages" - except the ones you mute; or receive "Following Only".

If you elect to receive "All Messages" then there is a Mute this thread link at the bottom of the messages you receive. Use it and you then do not receive further messages in that thread.

If you elect to receive "Following Only" and "First Message also" then there is a Follow this thread link at the bottom of those thread starters. Use it if the thread interests you. Once you're following a thread I think the link becomes an "Unfollow Thread" link.

On the web, these tools are available primarily in the Messages and Hashtags pages of the Your Groups page (click on the Groups.io logo in the upper left corner). The work I think Mark is missing is to bring this functionality to the group level, as viewing filters while looking at a single group's archive.

Re: How do you "follow" threads?

Perhaps there is a specific way to follow a thread; but, I'm thinking that if there are threads that members do not want to follow, they can click on Mute This Thread below the message.? Since I tend to read all messages that come into my inbox, I haven't really tested it out.?

I'm unclear about how you work all that out in the settings but think it's a great asset in groups.io and will help folks who feel bombarded by email groups feel more in control.

Thank you!

Re: new group creation

There was a group created on 5/23 where the name is 32 characters long, so I don't think it's length. Unless there's a space sneaking in or some other character it doesn't like, this sounds like a question for Support.
