First, go to Admin, Members.?
Use Filter to find moderators. See whether that member is a moderator or not.
Click on that moderator's name to open her record.
There is a blue menu item Membership. Click to open Activity History, Email Delivery History.
?
Also you can go to Admin, Activity and look for "xxxx@xx changed group settings via web" - in Activity History. That should track who changes the group to Announcement-Only and when.

Moderator Permissions.?

To Frances, yes I have looked at Moderator permissions. But there is nothing there to give her permission to post to the group after it's closed. She is always forced to do private messaging to her private email, which she hates. Conversely, I see nothing under Moderator permissions that forces her to use private messaging. If I am missing something as to what you are seeing that I am not, please educate me.?

Second, can you please educate me what difference it will make to check her record, activity history, and email delivery history?? I did recently see that she replied to someone, but was forced to use private messaging.?

You previously posted that you "close the group" by setting it to Announcement Only. Is that what you're still doing??
?
If so, she should still be able to post. If you're doing something else, probably not.

A shot in the dark, but unlike the JPEG Standard encoding which everyone has no problems with, I have seen before a few apps sometimes having problems with Lossless encoding and once or twice with Progressive encoding. Ask him what encoding he used, if he knows. Usually that setting is viewable wherever Save As JPEG is used, or it's set somewhere in the app settings.

Here's what one of my moderators explained to me in four key points. Yes, she is listed as a moderator, and it says Posting Always Allowed:

1) I used to be able to respond to posts after the group closed for the weekends.?

2) For many months now, I haven't been able to respond to the group. It will only respond as a private message, which then starts a conversation through my private email.??

3) I'm not trying to private message. It's the only option available to me.

4) I can't find anything in settings to change this problem.? Help!

How do I help her undo this mess she's in?

Mod's note: ?Merged this as a follow-up to her original email.?

One of my moderators needs help! She can't post anymore to the group after we close it on weekends.

This is what my moderator sent to me, below. Yes, she is listed as a moderator as "Posting always allowed". Please help me help her!!

She states her problem in four steps:

1) I used to be able to respond to posts after the group closed on Saturdays for our two day break, and the response would go to group. ?
2) But for many months now, I haven¡¯t been able to respond to the group!
3) Instead, it will only respond as a "private message", which then starts a conversation through my private email. ?
4) I¡¯m not trying to private message!!? It's the only option available, and I can't find anything in settings that would change it.?

HOW as owner do I help undo this problem she has as a moderator??

Well, that's what I thought, too.? But the browser (Firefox, in this case) says it's a JPEG image, so it's at least vaguely familiar to the browser.? The question is what might be tripping them (my browser and Groups.io) up.? Both seem to be finding something odd about the images.

The thing is, they display just fine in the email I got, and the images display in Firefox just fine when opened directly.

As for the picture's pedigree, here's what the poster told me:
The shots I sent out where taken with a canon EOS 5Dmark IV camera on a tripod but not guided.? I compressed them from ~ 20 megabyte? Jpegs to ~4 megabyte Jpegs so that the server would reject them. I did a little post processing to remove some noise and remove some hot pixels with picture window 7 an old program which is no longer supported but works fine.
The Picture Window 7 software (presumed the last piece in the chain) has apparently been superseded by version 8, but it's still available for download.? We're going to try a few things, but in the mean time I've asked that they manually reduce the size of the images before posting.

Since your browser cannot open them, this suggests that they are not actually jpegs.

The problem with that is that once you have the capability, there's nothing to keep you from doing anything else that comes with an Enterprise plan.? It's possible that Mark could set up other options, but doubt that he would want to spend the time for a very limited number of people.

Interesting...?

So, the images were posted via email.? I posted a couple of my own shortly after (these are pictures of the Comet); mine were resized by Groups, his were not.? But when I look at the messages in the Event Log, click on the attached images, I see mine in their resized state.? Clicking on his, my browser asks if I want to save them.? Both of the files are .jpg's, but clearly his are somehow different.? Mine are from my cell phone, his, I believe, are from a DSLR.

I'll ask what sort of camera he's got, and if the images were processed in some way.? I suspect they were...

Thanks for the help,

It shouldn't have made any difference, but could you check in your Activity log to see if the offending message and its attachments were sent by email or by the web composition window.

Also Bruce asked:?

What is the image format? Groups.io may not be recognizing it as a photo.

From the section quoted above (part of the original; query) the images were jpg format.

I don't want any extra information.? Just the one analytics feature, that I would pay for if it can be made available without the full Enterprise Plan.? I've filled out the Enterprise form with my situation and I'll see how they reply.

No.? For those that want "extra" information, they have to pay for the privilege.? I noticed recently that there's no longer a fixed price for Enterprise.? It now says "Custom Pricing" so you have to contact management to find out what it would be.? Among the best things about the site, IMO, is that there is no tracking or ads.

Using Google Analytics

I will be using one of my groups.io websites as a read-only website.? Only a handful of members.? I will be posting articles I write, like a blog.? While it makes no sense for the cost of the Enterprise plan for this, is there any way to use Google Analytics to track access and such to the website?

Hello, Noah does not do this. You are able to receive the bouncing notification. And that is suspicion enough.

I've done some testing and the most_recent_message always seems to be set to 0001-01-01T00:00:00Z so using it to identify members who have not posted a message does not work as it stands. I've raised a query on to try and determine if it should be set or if it has some other purpose.

Interesting, I mentioned this same condition back in 2021, not on the api call but the member list export, most_recent_message is always set to that same unusable value for everyone, see . Nothing ever came out of it so instead one can use the activity log and do it that way, i.e. find who has posted a message so it can be cross-referenced against a member table to get the one who haven't.
