However, to add to Malcolm's comment, you can also change a subgroup's visibility in the menu on the main group so only subgroup members see it. And delete all subgroup members but yourself. This doesn't mean that you can make a private subgroup visible or not to the general public. See

In the actual message - and in outgoing emails - the sequence of greater-than signs are retained as typed. They are only converted to blockquotes for display on the web site.*

When replying I consistently use:

You can always create a separate Gmail email account and make it a backup owner with no email delivery or notifications, and if this happens again turn that account on temporarily so you can get the messages and notifications in the meantime until the Fastmail account gets working again. If you don't have a second owner in your group (either you as a separate email address or someone else) this is also a good opportunity to add it, you never know if something goes wrong with the original owner address, and this way you can have a backdoor.
