It does. But I would suggest this is more effective use of MIPS and interweb bandwidth than sending the same image out to every individual in the Group.

OK, I created a "new member" using a Gmail account and the messages are coming through and downloading as emails without any problem.? So, it looks like it is a Fastmail issue.? Thanks to everyone for their help and suggestions.

I can't remember what happens to the main group URL after you add and then remove subgroups.
?
However, to add to Malcolm's comment, you can also change a subgroup's visibility in the menu on the main group so only subgroup members see it. And delete all subgroup members but yourself. This doesn't mean that you can make a private subgroup visible or not to the general public. See

Yes, it will present itself differently when you create a subgroup but both old ([email protected]) and new ([email protected]) addresses will work.

To avoid later confusion, don't delete the subgroup, just stop using it :-)

Why does ">>>" occasionally come across as a BQ triple indent, and sometimes come across as was intended, as text??
Ken -- This is an entirely different question.
?
In the actual message - and in outgoing emails - the sequence of greater-than signs are retained as typed. They are only converted to blockquotes for display on the web site.*
?
If you insert a space character between them and any subsequent text, they will not be displayed as blockquotes.
?
I cannot speak to what anyone's email client may be doing with them.

Email apps/clients will sometimes try to be 'helpful' by showing some formatting in plain text messages. An obvious example is email address that can be shown as a hyperlink when, by definition, a plain text message cannot contain such a link.

Bruce
it does make some sense but, of course, a Mod should be able to make that type of change (say Bold the text.)

VERY strange goings on, but at least I now know why the Toolbar is gone.
Thanks!

Nichole -- There are a number of things that could cause this.
?
- All images and files in messages are stored as attachments. If you have the group set up to "delete old attachments" they will eventually disappear.
- Deleting any image from the Emailed Photos folder will also remove it from the message.
- If the image was inserted as a link to somewhere else (<IMG> tag), and that image is subsequently removed at the source, a broken link will be displayed.
?
To sort this out further we will need more details on exactly what you've been doing.

Yes, even plain text messages are doing this. The message itself still contains the greater-than sign but it's converted into indents for display.

Is this a recent change?
I'm unsure if this is new behavior. I do suggest that if you're switching back and forth between plain text and html in your group settings some anomalies can be expected.

I've also discovered - just now - that if the original message was posted as plain text (i.e.: it has no HTML mime part) you cannot edit it to add formatting later. This is true regardless of any changes you might make to the group settings in an attempt to allow it.

Makes sense, if a little counter-intuitive.

That is not helpful at all for them to be delayed like that since I am the owner of my group and people depend on me to make timely responses.

You can always create a separate Gmail email account and make it a backup owner with no email delivery or notifications, and if this happens again turn that account on temporarily so you can get the messages and notifications in the meantime until the Fastmail account gets working again.

If you don't have a second owner in your group (either you as a separate email address or someone else) this is also a good opportunity to add it, you never know if something goes wrong with the original owner address, and this way you can have a backdoor.

Cheers,
Christos
