Re: Length of time to transfer group
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýDave, ? For my group, it took maybe three days before I was told the transfer was done, but I¡¯ve heard it can take longer. I think a lot depends on how many groups are trying to transfer, as there are only so many that can be done in a day. Patience, it will happen. ? Don ? Approximately how long does it take to transfer a group over from Yahoo! from the time the go-ahead is sent to Groups.io? |

The member notices documentation is now up on the site and available under a new "Help" tab at the top of every page. Check it out. Only one notice can go out every month, and that's the Group Guidelines. You can't schedule files to be sent monthly, as you could in yahoo. Length of time to transfer group
Approximately how long does it take to transfer a group over from Yahoo! from the time the go-ahead is sent to Groups.io?
I searched through the messages and found the question asked a year and a half ago and it was never answered.? We made the mistake of making an announcement several days ago to the members of the Yahoo! group and, naturally,? not everybody read the announcement carefully, which has caused some confusion. Adding to the Group Managers Forum wiki
We have so many new members who need basic information.?
There is some useful content now in the wiki. If you have a problem, get or give a great answer, perhaps you could take a few moments to add it to the wiki. /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/home Frances |

I added it to the wiki but of course, J, please edit if I am wrong! Or add the new bit about using the calendar. /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Member-Notices Frances |

Ah, yes, the famous Todo list! lol. All my most passionate desires are on that list, possibly never to be implemented.?? |

Nope. Not possible here except for the Group Guidelines (and that's not really a file). You have to use the calendar here for monthly sends. unsubscribed for deleting mail in the spam folder
Message from a member of two of my lists:
I never unsubscribed from this list yet I received 2 emails that I was being removed because I deleted some mail that was in my spam folder.?? ?
I resubscribed (hopefully correctly) and I think everything should be fine.

Seems like there is something fishing going on with the programming stuff for both of these lists. Why would this be part of the list software? Rachel |
Transferring to a subgroup
#subgroups
#transfer
Can the archives from a Y! group be transferred into a subgroup? We had two groups on Y! One group was the main group. The other independent Y! group was made up entirely of members of the main group with a special interest that not all members of the main group were interested in. We transferred the main group several weeks ago. This seems like exactly what subgroups are made for and I set up a subgroup of our main group.
Now we want to get the subgroup going. We'd like to move the Y! archive for the secondary group into the archive for the groups.io subgroup. Is this possible? If so, what is the recommended procedure? One issue is ownership of the subgroup. I am listed as owner and moderator of the subgroup. The main group has several other owners and moderators. I would like to make them owners and moderators of the subgroup also, but they don't appear on the join list. How do I handle this? Thanks, Marv Thanks, Marv |
Re: E.U. Issues with Transfers?
ken,
The question at hand had to do with material copied from Yahoo Groups to Groups.io. Neither TOS requires the poster to relinquish ownership of their copyright, but both assert a license to display the content. My point in citing the TOS is that such language would be unnecessary if Jim's claim that merely posting online puts your content in the public domain were true. That said, I'm not particularly happy that Groups.io's TOS requires the grant of a perpetual and irrevocable license to use our material. I much prefer the vastly more modest license Yahoo required. However I have yet to feel strongly enough about this issue to take my marbles and go home (back to Yahoo or wherever else). I don't think that license question has a bearing on the topic of EU and/or UK privacy laws, and whether copying content from Yahoo to Groups.io violates those laws, which is the subject of this topic. So if you want to talk about the license terms, that should probably be a New Topic. Shal |

I don't believe there are any realistic copyright issues in making these

transfers, nor that the GDPR will affect that area for groups. Technically, every time you send a reply by email (or via a group web page) quoting all or part of the original message you are in breach of the sender's copyright. This has been the case ever since email was invented. Have you been sued for it yet? The GDPR is primarily about protecting personal data, which roughly means anything by which a person may be identified. The nature of groups means that email addresses are distributed to members by email whenever anyone posts a message, so the data protection needed for that purpose appears not to be a problem either. It certainly isn't changed by a transfer from Yahoo. What may be a problem is the exporting of any other personal information (as in the profile) from a server in the EU to one in USA, and possibly also being able to show how such information is protected (or why it doesn't need to be). Another possible problem is the requirement for the platform, or maybe the groups, to show they have the permission of the member to send them emails. That clearly is no problem with people joining directly, but may be with transfers. That's one for the lawyers to sort out. I've no doubt there may be more that's relevant, but most of this legislation is aimed at companies like banks, and possibly the likes of Facebook and Google, which handle large volumes of much more personal and important data. I have a copy of the full legislation, but it's huge and complex (and the fines for getting it wrong are also huge). I haven't had time to do more than glance through it, and I'm not a lawyer. However, I'm sure the copyright issue is not a serious problem with regard to this particular legislation. I'm certainly intending to transfer my Yahoo groups over here.
