Re: Accidentally Changed my groups.io Group name now can't access account

Mike,

Do you have it the way you want now, or were you thinking of changing it back?
It sounded like you made a mistake when you changed the name. If it's the way
you want now, that's great.

First of all, here's the help page on changing your group name. By looking at that, you might see where you went wrong.
/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/renaming-groups?single=true

It may be that there is a delay before your new group name is on the server.
That help page says:

Note:?

It might take some time for the renamed group to function normally because, due to the subdomain addressing used by Groups.io, any change to the root email address has to be propagated through the DNS entries (so the new group URL resolves into an IP address). This process can take several hours.

Renaming your main group also changes the URL of any associated subgroups.

Accidentally Changed my groups.io Group name now can't access account

Michael Miehl

Good evening.

I am new to and just made a mistake that prevents me from accessing my account.

I am the group owner and paid for the $220 subscription. In an effort to make it easier for folks to send messages to our group, I changed the name. BIG MISTAKE!! Since I changed the name I'm getting a "can't find the server" error from my web browser when I try to access it as an administrator (not sure what others are experiencing who want to send messages). But of course, the that I paid for has the old name and the new one isn't recognized. Anyone have a clue how I can go back and change the group name to the one I originally registered? I can't get into my account to do this. I can see the group under "my groups" but when I click on it I get the error.?

This seems like it should have been much harder to do this - change the name of our group (after having paid for it, etc.) and therefore lock oneself out of the account. I'll keep trying to see what I can do but wanted to reach out to your group for help.

I appreciate your advice.?

Sincerely,

Mike

Well, if the invitation shows as "Sent", it was sent. If they didn't receive it, there could be a number of reasons. It could be a typo in their email address, or the message was diverted to a spam folder, or it was intercepted by their email provider, or...

Are you sure these two people aren't already in the group? They could have joined by clicking the "Join This Group" link on your Home Page. Many people refuse to click on links in emails, for fear that they'll be diverted to a phishing site.

Generally, that page will continue to show the invitation as "Sent" until the recipient responds to the invitation.

Also -- can an owner personally subscribe a person who wants to join? That seems like it would solve the problem, but I can't find any way to do so.
Paid groups can do that. See?/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/managing-members/premium-and-enterprise-member-management-options?

Help with Invite

Edited

I'm asking for help again, please. I thank you all for your help in regaining my position as Owner of my group, I'm back and all is well. However, two people have requested to join the group, and in each case I went to Invite, followed the instructions, sent an invitation, then checked to make sure it had been sent. Here is a screen shot of the page:

As you can see, it shows that the invitations have been sent, but the persons never received the invitations. Please help me understand why, and how I can make sure the invitations are sent. Also -- can an owner personally subscribe a person who wants to join? That seems like it would solve the problem, but I can't find any way to do so.

Thank you for your help.

?
If you send out in a post a link to a a website that has photos, clicking on the link will show you the full article with images. It doesn't remove them from the article.?

That is separate from Attachments and Photos

In Admin, scroll down and click on features. Disable photos if that is your preference.
The Photos menu also disappears from the side bar.

I found though that I could still send photos. The best way to stop too many photos is to also change the Attachments setting.?
In Admin, Message Formatting, change Attachments to Moderate. That allows some attachments to go through, including photos. But the message will have to be moderated. You can just delete the attachment if it is inappropriate.

Hope this helps!

I just checked the Wiki for using the choice of no photos (not for my group but for another).? I says no photos visible nor saved which I understand.

Are you actually using the app or just the mobile version of the website in a browser?

The first image is the app on my iPhone and the second is the mobile version using Safari browser.

This next one is Safari browser - notice the option to open the app. With this I can use my fingers to zoom in or out. Not so with the app.

I use the mobile all the time.? I have a iPhone 12 Pro.? It was a little wonky at first but if you go from portrait to landscape mode by physically rotating the iPhone, you are able to see everything in the window.? There are sometimes problems seeing member pages and trying to see when they "Joined" but overall, you can access all parts of the site.? At least I can with this particular iPhone.

As Frances said, there is currently no function to increase the text size in the app.? You could always use a browser on your phone which should allow you to do that though. Check the subgroup for any updates and to raise further queries on the app.

I don't think that accessibility is fully there with the app.
I raised in Beta group, App Subgroup.

Perhaps a followup there?
The last post was February and asked for in part: ?"I.E. to be responsive to the iOS font size controls."

Mobile App question #accessibility #app

I manage several groups.
I just downloaded the iOS mobile App.

I can't read any messages, or do anything in the mobile App - the display is all far too small for me to read.

Where is the setting to make the display larger in the mobile App (it doesn't follow the iOS text size setting, which I have right in the middle, nor can I zoom the page like I do in Safari). I must be missing something obvious.

I am planning to use the mobile App for communication at an outdoor event, to coordinate people. But if I can't read the messages, that isn't going to work.

Thanks.

I doubt this has anything to do with the observed behavior.

This morning when I plonked my butt down in front of my computer the group I was working in (and all of it's subs)? now only renders in the mobile interface model with no left-side navigation and only the few nav icons at the bottom of the screen.? ?
Zoom out a few clicks (Ctrl-minus) and I suspect those menu items will reappear.

-BUT-? ?any other group like GMF, beta and a few of the groups I manage from this account, are still presenting as expected with the nav menu on the leftvin my browser.
Zoom settings are specific to the pages being viewed.

Dgrass1 - I remember that!? Maybe Mark can add it???

I've downloaded the photos from 14 to 22 plus photo 13 and uploaded them one-by-one in the correct order so the problem is now solved (for the moment).

Thank you all for your ideas on what to try and why it was doing what it was doing.

I kind of agree with Chris, but a new problem could popup if one wanted to insert a picture between 01 and 02. One good aspect of the old Y Groups photo albums I really liked, was the abbility to 'reorder' the pictures in an album by simply moving them around with a mouse. If a person wanted to move picture 03 in between 01 and 02, then a simple drag and drop was all that was needed. Numerical or alphabetical naming did not matter.

The behavior I've just experienced 1st hand explains a lot of the user confusion that has occurred after I've provided a training session.? If the instructor is confused, the students will be too ;-)
?
It has to be some sort of caching issue, but trying all of the usual things, verifying the app isn't running on my phone, logging out/in, clearing the cache on my browser, hasn't fixed it.??

Am I missing a setting somewhere?

I probably should have said I agree, except I had a reservation about trying to put a picture in between 01 and 02, until you brought up naming the the middle picture 02a. I didn't think about trying that. I'll have to give that a try.

As to inserting a picture between photos 01 and 02, if it is named 02a then it will appear between 01 and 02 thus:... 01, 02a, 02... as previously described. (Provided the correct sort order is chosen!)?

Then Margo wrote:?I know at the Photos level it will alphabetize the albums A to Z or 00-99 and A to Z.? Inside an album it won't do that even though I choose Name up or down.

It may be that you have too many characters in your photo names. Get the "year" into the album name for a start, and remove from the photo names. If "challenge week" is common to every photo that needs to be eliminated as well.

If I get a chance I will try to determine if there is a limit to the number of characters that a "sort by name" can handle.?

Chris?
