I realize the member becomes "Unmoderated", but most of my groups are fully moderated, so I wanted to know if they go to "Override not moderated."? In an emergency, I unmoderate my group, so "Use Group Moderation Setting" would be perfect for my NMM graduates.? I reserve "Override not moderated" for those who stay on topic and know how to quote properly.

Re: Graduation from "New Member Moderated"

After the requisite number of messages, the new member is automatically unmoderated. See this in the Owner Help Manual
section about setting up Spam Control and Moderation settings.
/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/customizing-group-settings/spam-control-and-moderation-settings

Unmoderate After
After you select the New Members Moderate checkbox, the Unmoderate After list appears. Select an option from the list to specify whether new members automatically are no longer moderated after they send one approved message or after they send two, three, or four consecutive approved messages. Or you can select Not enabled (which is at the top of the list) to keep new members moderated until you decide to unmoderate them manually (see Managing members).

I believe it goes to the Group Moderation Setting.

Graduation from "New Member Moderated"

When a member has posted the required number of messages to become unmoderated, what is their member status?

Use Group Moderation Setting
or
Override: not moderated

Thanks for any help!

Thank you to everyone that responded! ?I'm by no means newbie at this, but in my old age have gotten somewhat paranoid and legal shy.
Not only have I been taking care of the "list" but I am on my second tenure on the BoD of my HOA. ?We're going back almost 20 years. ? Yes, there has been a history of copyright infringement by bad actors, resulting in DMCA takedown requests. Such things give groups.io a bad reputation. As if that wasn't sufficient, there are other reasons...a main one being an accumulation of Basic groups that send lots of large attachments (thus taking up the lion's share of email server resources) while contributing nothing to the bottom line.

See the last bullet at?/helpcenter/faq/1/group-owner-moderator-faq/q-what-types-of-groups-are-not?and also the link Duane gave you where this new policy was announced.

Well said, Jack, and I agree 100% on both points. Our guidelines state that folks should take back-and-forth arguments off-list, and I¡¯ve intervened a number of times to enforce that.?

Jack Heim

My experience is that most group members prefer a stricter moderator.

Also, it is worth while to keep in mind that people rarely care who is in the right in an on-line arguement. They just want it to stop. Members of a group, especially the moderator, should realize that they can't get anywhere by insisting they've been wronged.

These 2 points are related. As a moderator, you should just do what you have to do with as little drama as possible.

I didn't realize until you posted as a bug on beta, but if it were me, I'd just remove the " as it is 100 days since it was created" part, so it would apply to all locked topics.

This individual is likely breaking state law as well as federal law in doing so. Perhaps your local police can help get a restraining order and perhaps file charges. He has no First Amendment rights "in your house". Your group, your rules, your house. Some folks get on HOA boards to "control the world". Ban him immediately.

There are very few reasons to ban someone immediately and without a second chance, but for me this would be one of them.

*In my opinion* (only), any member who cannot be relied upon to refrain from malicious actions such as you describe should be summarily banned.

If it moderates all activity then our group can use it for problem members but if they are free to mess with files etc.? this is a big worry.

Thank you!

No, at present, a moderated member only pertains to messages they send.? There has been discussion and requests to have individual permissions/restrictions per member for files, photos, etc.? It was added to the list of possible improvements about 7 years ago, but no major changes yet.? The closest thing we have now is a restriction on who can create folders and albums.

Unless they're a moderator, they can't delete files unless they're the one that uploaded it.? I doubt that will ever change.

It sounds to me like a small bug in the "lock topic" logic.? Make sure it wasn't automatically locked by the setting for the group.? If not, then post a #bug on the beta group.? I'd include the setting used in the group as additional information for troubleshooting.

You can read about the change in site policy at .? (Mark is the site owner.)? I happen to know that there was a group closed within the last month because a copyright owner complained.

Locking a message question

Good morning all,

On a couple of occasions recently a new topic was sent by a moderator and to prevent replies, he locked it.? Upon looking at it, saw this: "This topic is now locked as it is 100 days since it was created.? If you need to add to it, please contact a Moderator or Owner. Many thanks"?? This is incorrect in that the topic was locked almost immediately after it was published.?

Is this a bug ?, incidentally we have a free group

It is never ok to send illegal stuff/stuff explicity forbidden in the Terms through any io group¡

Groups can and are closed if found out to go against the Terms and Conditions.

I don¡¯t know what you put down as planned content for your new group.

?

It is a sad fact that most stationery, tag and other graphic related groups are illegally sharing copyrighted content. ?The copyright compliant groups are a tiny minority (mine is). ? This is why this restriction for new groups was introduced.
