Jim, where did you read this statement?

My group members are mostly Italians and people from European countries.
I have informed them that we are about to relocate and noone has made any objection, so far.
Yahoo and Groups.io are both free services, so I can't see what sort of damages they may suffer in leaving the former for the latter.
I suppose that those who do not agree with the transfer will simply leave the group.

Thank you, I tried a test, I like whats already there better. I think I¡¯ll just leave it alone.

I did read the wiki before asking here, there was no explanation of the Home?statement that made it clear to me.

For me, knowing that wiki isn¡¯t charged in the storage count (and that files are) made me wish we¡¯d used wiki instead of files when we started our group but what¡¯s done is done.

Subgroup creation, better before or after Yahoo transfer?

I got the longed-for message from Mark and my group is about to relocate on Groups.io, at last.
I was going to create two subgroups, one for moderators and the other for expanded discussion (meetings organization, off-topics, etc.), but I wonder if I'd better wait until the main group (4000+ members) has successfully relocated.
Would the 2 subgroups mess up in some way the transfer?

I got the same thing in a group, I could not approve the messages. Also I tried posting a message and they do not get posted to the group. I just wrote group support reporting the glitches. Several messages I approved through email did not get posted either.

I tired from my smart phone as well as my computer. No other group I have has this problem. Just the group that has been recently copied over from yahoo.

E.U. Issues with Transfers?

Hi,

? 1) Is this really true?

? ? ? someone's user who lives in the E.U.?

? 3) Has groups.io been contacted by anyone in the E.U. claiming 'damages'?

? I do not find any warnings about this in the transfer process stuff.? I see no
way to find out which members of a yahoo group are in the E.U.? Not even
any way to know for sure where they live at all.

group to groups.io (over 10000 members).

I have a similar situation with the board subgroup to my PTA group. Unit
members (members of the primary group) ought to be able to email the
board, and just the board, but shouldn't receive other's messages to the
board nor messages among the board members.
Sorry, Shal, can you explain in simple words how to do this?
I would like to give the main group members the opportunity to contact the moderation subgroup, but I don't want them to be actually part of the subgroup or read messages among moderators.

Thank you.

No. That is "5 minutes ago" - an example of relative time. It is not a control over time accuracy.

The feature is whether you want time displayed in a relative way ("an hour ago", "yesterday") when it is recent enough, or whether you always want to see the actual time displayed.

This control by the way is largely or entirely ignored, and Mark ought to remove it. He's settled on using abbreviated absolute time everywhere, with hover text showing the full date/time string.
Thank you, Shal for all the clarifications. I¡¯m setting up two detail projects ¡ª several conjoined Groups.io and a time banking system. The number of boxes to check off on dozens of screens numbs my brain.

I would eliminate this. I scrolled through my beyond full inbox a few days ago and all the messages were for today, yesterday, two hours ago. To quote the date in my return message, I had to figure out what it was. I don¡¯t think there is a setting in Apple Mail to turn this off but you remind me to look.

Thanks again,
Sharon

Migration and group plans

I'm migrating our discussion group from Yahoo to Groups.IO (for obvious reasons). I have sent a notice to our membership and we plan to do the migration at the end of this month. My question involves migration and group size/pricing. We are a non-profit organization and have no problem paying for Premium service if necessary, but are unsure as to whether we really need it.

At this time we have 66 MB of files and 589 of uploaded photos in the Yahoo group. I know that attachments are not migrated and messages don't count against our allotment. So at this time is appears that we don't need to upgrade; but that could change, and we do have a vested interest in supporting this service and helping to ensure the long-term solvency of groups.io.

My questions: If we don't upgrade to Premium beforehand, what files will get discarded during migration? Does groups.io notify you when you go over your storage limitation and provide a "grace period" for you to do something about it before they begin to throw out your files and photos?

Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

If you write to that address you receive a message with a list of all e-mail commands.
I find it a bit confusing. it looks like an address one could contact to ask for assistance.

what is "Claimed by"

OK, I've got an interesting one.

The easy one - I have some messages in a subgroup in the Pending queue.? ?I am one of the sub-group owners, and an owner of the main/parent group.? ?(a) When I click on them and say approve, they don't leave the queue but (b) both messages a "claimed by" pin on them.? ?What does that tag mean?? ?(and why, as a subgroup owner, can I not 'approve' them and clear them from the queue)

The hard question- this what I see through my web browser 'at work'.? ?'at home' I don't see those messages in the pending queue - Pending is empty form the home browser.? I'm logged in using the exact same username.? Why might I be getting different views?? Might the firewall at work be doing odd things??

Thanks for any assistance

- John Mc

Re: Change the large group cover picture

Brenda,

I changed the Subject of your message - this question is not related to the Wiki (the "home" page of the Wiki being different from the Home page of the group).

can we change out that large picture on the group page for something else?
  • In the left column click Admin, if necessary to open the admin buttons
  • In the left column click Settings
  • In the row of buttons at the top click Cover Photo
  • Click Browse...
  • Select an image file on your computer
  • Click Open
  • Click Set Cover Photo

I can change the bar appearance by changing my posting preference in my account between html and plain text.? I don't see how that could be happening if you're just switching between the main and subgroups though.? Changing that should change it for all groups.

?
"To receive an email containing a list of these commands"
/static/help#emailcommands

There's also a -help command to Yahoo Groups. It basically re-caps the group's About page.

I¡¯m editing the welcome messages of several groups. One is a main group and the others are subgroups. The editing bar appears on the main group¡¯s special notices page but not on the subgroups¡¯. All the lists have the same options set.

No idea. The Member Notices in a subgroup of my test group have their formatting toolbar.

Re: Explain Special Notice?

Elizabeth,

I am somewhat confused by the special notices thing too. I wanted to
use it to make sure all the people that have been transferred to
groups from yahoo actually knew about it. So I changed all the no
email people to special notices, and wrote an email explaining the new
situation.
So far so good.

Except you could have spared yourself some effort (I think) by checking "Disable No Email" in the Message Policies section of your group's Settings.

But I have no idea how to send this. I¡¯m obviously missing something.
The "New Topic" page ought to have a "Send this message as a special notice." checkbox.

Alternatively, maybe I¡¯ve messed up the whole list, since there don¡¯t
seem to have been any messages sent or received today!
That's a little harder to guess at. Have you (or anyone else) tried to post any messages? Via web or by email?

And where are you looking? Your email Inbox? The group's Messages section? The group's Pending page?

One way to learn if messages have been attempted is to look in the Activity page. Click the "Message Activity" tab at the top to limit the list to message-related entries. Do you see any activity? Do the items give you a clue about why nothing has posted?

Re: first glitch found?

Andy,

I have found this to be true of ALL searches I have done so far on
groups.io. All searches seem to find exact word matches only.
Not quite. Some time ago I asked for and got partial matches in the Members list.

Unfortunately not also the Activity log. And that's a PITA.

Messages transfer over time so they may still be loading. A certain amount are transferred at one time. I had the same problem. Mark said still transferring. It happened over 24 hours, I think.

Re: Query: Sending Invite from Yahoo!

Dennis,

The problem is, Yahoo refuses to recognize that email address as it is not a Yahoo mail address.

Um, I'm not sure what you're doing, but a Yahoo Group's Invite page does not require that the email address be a Yahoo Mail address.

If you're receiving an error message about being unable to load the content, you can probably ignore that, the invitation may have been sent anyway. This is a common failure in Yahoo Groups recently.
?
Please advise how to proceed.

When using the Yahoo Groups' Invite page include a test email address along with [email protected]. Then watch that test address to see if you get the invitation. Make sure to check the spam folder and anywhere else your email service might deliver the message. The test address must be an address that is NOT listed in your Yahoo account (not one of the ones you can select in the Edit Membership or Manage My Groups pages).
