what is "Claimed by"

OK, I've got an interesting one.

The easy one - I have some messages in a subgroup in the Pending queue.? ?I am one of the sub-group owners, and an owner of the main/parent group.? ?(a) When I click on them and say approve, they don't leave the queue but (b) both messages a "claimed by" pin on them.? ?What does that tag mean?? ?(and why, as a subgroup owner, can I not 'approve' them and clear them from the queue)

The hard question- this what I see through my web browser 'at work'.? ?'at home' I don't see those messages in the pending queue - Pending is empty form the home browser.? I'm logged in using the exact same username.? Why might I be getting different views?? Might the firewall at work be doing odd things??

Thanks for any assistance

Re: Change the large group cover picture

Brenda,

I changed the Subject of your message - this question is not related to the Wiki (the "home" page of the Wiki being different from the Home page of the group).

can we change out that large picture on the group page for something else?
  • In the left column click Admin, if necessary to open the admin buttons
  • In the left column click Settings
  • In the row of buttons at the top click Cover Photo
  • Click Browse...
  • Select an image file on your computer
  • Click Open
  • Click Set Cover Photo

I can change the bar appearance by changing my posting preference in my account between html and plain text.? I don't see how that could be happening if you're just switching between the main and subgroups though.? Changing that should change it for all groups.

Re: [groupname]+help@ & Formatting Welcome Messages

Sharon,

I notice that in addition to a +owner email address at the bottom of messages, there is a +help email address. Who does this go to?
?
"To receive an email containing a list of these commands"
/static/help#emailcommands

There's also a -help command to Yahoo Groups. It basically re-caps the group's About page.

I¡¯m editing the welcome messages of several groups. One is a main group and the others are subgroups. The editing bar appears on the main group¡¯s special notices page but not on the subgroups¡¯. All the lists have the same options set.
?
No idea. The Member Notices in a subgroup of my test group have their formatting toolbar.

Re: Explain Special Notice?

Elizabeth,

I am somewhat confused by the special notices thing too. I wanted to
use it to make sure all the people that have been transferred to
groups from yahoo actually knew about it. So I changed all the no
email people to special notices, and wrote an email explaining the new
situation.
So far so good.

Except you could have spared yourself some effort (I think) by checking "Disable No Email" in the Message Policies section of your group's Settings.

But I have no idea how to send this. I¡¯m obviously missing something.
The "New Topic" page ought to have a "Send this message as a special notice." checkbox.

Alternatively, maybe I¡¯ve messed up the whole list, since there don¡¯t
seem to have been any messages sent or received today!
That's a little harder to guess at. Have you (or anyone else) tried to post any messages? Via web or by email?

And where are you looking? Your email Inbox? The group's Messages section? The group's Pending page?

One way to learn if messages have been attempted is to look in the Activity page. Click the "Message Activity" tab at the top to limit the list to message-related entries. Do you see any activity? Do the items give you a clue about why nothing has posted?

Re: first glitch found?

Andy,

I have found this to be true of ALL searches I have done so far on
groups.io. All searches seem to find exact word matches only.
Not quite. Some time ago I asked for and got partial matches in the Members list.

Unfortunately not also the Activity log. And that's a PITA.

Messages transfer over time so they may still be loading. A certain amount are transferred at one time. I had the same problem. Mark said still transferring. It happened over 24 hours, I think.

Re: Query: Sending Invite from Yahoo!

Dennis,

The problem is, Yahoo refuses to recognize that email address as it is not a Yahoo mail address.

Um, I'm not sure what you're doing, but a Yahoo Group's Invite page does not require that the email address be a Yahoo Mail address.

If you're receiving an error message about being unable to load the content, you can probably ignore that, the invitation may have been sent anyway. This is a common failure in Yahoo Groups recently.
?
Please advise how to proceed.

When using the Yahoo Groups' Invite page include a test email address along with [email protected]. Then watch that test address to see if you get the invitation. Make sure to check the spam folder and anywhere else your email service might deliver the message. The test address must be an address that is NOT listed in your Yahoo account (not one of the ones you can select in the Edit Membership or Manage My Groups pages).

Instructions for Setting a Password

I subscribed to one of my lists on Sunday from 4 email addresses so I could get the instructions right for setting up a password on Groups.io.

I didn¡¯t go into the option of not setting up a password but just using the link every 30 days or when you want to go to the website. I don¡¯t know what the advantage of doing this is and too many people would surely ask me. Comments welcome.

SUBSCRIBING AND SETTING UP A PASSWORD IN 3 STEPS

1. JOINING [email protected], the main members list. All members and residents are expected to subscribe to messages from this group in order to follow the business and social life of the community. And to receive any emergency notifications.

This is a restricted membership group, so all requests to join must be approved by a moderator. To subscribe, send a blank email to:

[email protected]

You will receive an email to confirm your request. Reply to the message to confirm that you want to join. Moderators will then receive a message to approve your membership.

2. SENDING MESSAGES: When your subscription to Members is approved, you will receive a welcome message with links for sending messages, etc. The bottom link is "To see and modify all of your groups, go to ¡±. Click this link to set a password and preferences for your account. This is required so you can visit the [email protected] homepage to join Subgroups, read messages on the website, see files, and use the wiki.

3. SETTING A PASSWORD: At , Click "Log In" in the upper right corner and you will be asked for your email address and password. Since you don¡¯t have a password yet, you have 3 choices (1) Click on ¡°Forgot password or haven¡¯t set one up¡± OR (2) sign in with your Facebook or Google password.

If you choose ¡°Forgot password or haven¡¯t set one up¡±, you will be sent an email with a link to log in to your account. You will have 60 minutes to log in. Click on the link and you will be able to up a password and to choose whether you ALSO want to be able to sign in with your Facebook and/or Google passwords.

If you choose to use only a Facebook or Google password, use it to sign in.

In either case you will then be taken to to your account page where you can set your Preferences.

PREFERENCES. On your account page, use the menu on the left to set up other preferences and options. The most important is choose timezone and the format for recent messages (minutes ago, today, yesterday, or dates). You can also use this menu to see any messages that have bounced from your account. (Messages bounce when your mailbox is full or your email is down.)

SUBGROUPS. The various team and pod lists are now Subgroups of the Members group. Once you have joined Members, you can join any Subgroup without further approval. There is a list of the subgroups on the [email protected] homepage.

GROUP AND SUBGROUP SETTINGS. The settings for the Members group and each Subgroup are independent of each other. Members and Subgroups have been set to the same settings as old Yahoo lists but there are many more options. Your group may want to explore these at some point.

Query: Sending Invite from Yahoo!

I'm the Admin of a Yahoo Group. In the process of transferring the group from Yahoo to Groups.io, I'm asked to send an invite to "[email protected]" email address. The problem is, Yahoo refuses to recognize that email address as it is not a Yahoo mail address. Please advise how to proceed.
Thanks in advance. Dennis

You should have been here before Search was improved! ;>)? One of the current limitations is that it can't find partial words.? There was a big discussion about this on beta@ last summer.? This version was introduced in October.? You might ask over there if further changes are planned.

The Home page will automatically become the starting page when someone selects Wiki from the menu, replacing the index (?) page. You don't need to do anything else except use it.

Hi everyone,
As "duh" as this sounds, could someone definitively explain how the Special Notice option works? I know how to do it - I'm just confused about how it is delivered. I thought it was to deliver to everyone, regardless of delivery option, other than those with "No Email". The purpose being, I thought, was to not only to immediately deliver the note that is the Special Notice to those receiving individual emails but also to those on digest option, so as to avoid the "digest delay".

Now I'm hearing rumors that that is not how it works.

Help?
Thanks much,
Ginny

first glitch found?

We've just started transferring our groups from yahoo and have been very pleased so far with both the results and Mark's support. ?However, I discovered something a bit puzzling today. ?I was searching for a person whose last name was Holbrooks and, when I enter that entire name, all his records came up. ?However, if I just enter Holbrook (without the "s" at the end), it doesn't find any of his records. ?That seems very peculiar to me! ? What am I missing? ?Or perhaps I was spoiled in yahoo where I could enter a truncated version of a name and it would find all entries containing that sequence of letters?
