I was wondering whether you can send MailChimp posts to your group through Integration in Groups.io

Just curious - did you send the email as private message through the GMF groups.io interface or by clicking on Reply in the email footer of the email address or by using Reply in your email client?

And no, I didn't get it. Not sure why. I am not bouncing as far as Groups.io. is concerned. But occasionally, my email account is overly sensitive.

The calendar is not involved in any way.
The problem is with simple email messages to the group with the box checked to send as Special Notice.

It couldn't hurt, but it's still a work-around.

When you change a calendar entry in , a subscribed Google calendar will eventually sync with it, but not? in real time. My experience is that it takes 12-24 hours before the calendar feed is polled for an update. Given that Sharon feels it necessary to send these updates as Special Notices, it seems likely that timeframe might be insufficient.

Frankly, from the message I cited in beta, it also seems likely that these subscribers could be missing out on a lot more than just a few calendar notices.

Thanks for the quick follow-up, Bruce.? I obviously was not trying to shanghai anyone, of course.? They're already on-board...just a bit lazy about rowing-;)

The vast majority of our club's members are seniors/super-seniors looking for answers about their Apple devices and need lots of hand-holding.? They've all opted in already (most of these members back in 2020) but somehow their emails from groups.io got undelivered.? I just checked the Activity log and it seems they all started bouncing on 9/3/2021.

The addresses run the gamut of providers - Gmail, ameritech, thevillages.net - as examples.? The latter one is shall we say "wifty" at best so I can understand it might have been down or having probs for a time long enough for groups.io to say they were undeliverable.? And as I type this, I'm thinking that since the MailChimp stuff comes out weekly and monthly, there may have been a window there that things were not going thru from groups.io -- at least that's one thought!

I'll try reaching out to them directly to see if I can get them off their respective pots!

Thanks again,

But now I can, and I am certain that this is not, repeat not, what Peter has seen. (Bruce; you had better remove the "like" you gave me!)

What happened in this case was that the applicant submitted his pending subscription response after his application had been auto - deleted after 14 days, despite being nudged to reply. His reason for asking to join was perfectly satisfactory, so I told him to reapply but not to bother resending the reply.

He reapplied and I let him in immediately, hence the phenomenon that I described above.

Mea maximum culpa, as the Romans said...

However, I can make some suggestions about how Peter might investigate further.

  1. Filtering the full Activity log by "Approved Member" find out who approved the members concerned and when. Make notes of both sets of details.
  2. Then change the filtering to "Message to +owner"; is there any evidence of responses to the pending subscription messages on or shortly prior to each approval??
  3. If these messages can be found are there equivalent records in the individuals' membership pages?
  4. Are applications being approved by a new or inexperienced moderator who may be overlooking the requirement for responses to the Pending Subscription messages?
The above may provide some clue about what is happening...

And apologies again for the earlier pointless post! :(

Makes me wonder if that person deleted his account (or simply unsubscribed) and subsequently applied a second time. That would create a second member identifier (the one now in Pending) but an unassociated +owner email (the one sent prior to the deletion/unsub).

Seems unlikely, but I've seen applicants do weirder things.? :-)? I'd try searching the activity log on his email address and see if you can piece it together. If you can't, maybe it's time for a bug report after all.

Chuck -- They must click the link in the bounce probe that you have [manually] sent.

By the time the B is red ("bounced"), groups.io is no longer sending automatic bounce probes.

Or if they ever happen to log in, there is a red banner with a link that they can click to unbounce.

2) If it never goes away until members answer the probes, can I circumvent their laziness - or whatever reason for their lack of response - by removing them and re-adding them to our group?
Bouncing is an account status, not a subscription status. You can remove and re-add them, but their account will still be "bounced."

3) Lastly, if I can go that route, can I remove and re-add them without them getting the notification that they were added since that might be a bit confusing to them.
Groups.io will not allow you to shanghai someone into your group without any notification, regardless of whether they may have been subscribed before. Such notification always contains an opt-out link.

Please note that repeatedly adding someone to your group who doesn't want to be is a violation of the groups.io Terms of Service.??/static/tos?

Another question about bounced email addresses...

Chuck Palmer

I have a half dozen or so email addresses in our group that are bouncing with the red "B". ? I've sent them Bounce Probes numerous times but for whatever reason -- most likely laziness or lack of caring I'm guessing -- they are staying bounced.? But literally all of these email address are receiving emails sent to them when I send out announcements via MailChimp - both manual campaigns and via an RSS feed from our website.? MailChimp shows them not only receiving those emails but also opening them so those addresses are obviously valid.

My questions then are:
1) Once groups.io flags someone with a red bounce, does it stay that way until the member actually does answer the bounce probe or does it go away at some point??
2) If it never goes away until members answer the probes, can I circumvent their laziness - or whatever reason for their lack of response - by removing them and re-adding them to our group?
3) Lastly, if I can go that route, can I remove and re-add them without them getting the notification that they were added since that might be a bit confusing to them.

I have managed to find one occurrence of the reported phenomenon by looking back at the +owner messages sent by recent applicants. It was not an entirely comprehensive search, but was enough to find that on April 19th a pending member submitted a response to the pending subscription message that showed the reported problem.

Unlike the other 9 or 10 that I checked (going back to late March) there was no record of his message in his individual member record, but his message was listed in the main Activity log (filtered using Message to +owner); interestingly that record was not linkified to either his membership page or any record of the message itself; all the others checked had both links present.

I cannot offer any suggestion about how and why this might have happened.

I don't believe it's ever been against the rules on Groups.io.? It's up to you to control who joins your group so miscreants can't get access.? If you don't have restricted membership, then they can do whatever they want.

It's not a virus, it's a phishing email.

If you had clicked on the "authenticate account" link, it would take you to a site that will try to steal passwords, identification and/or financial information.

My wife fell for this kind of thing once. The site she landed on had a company logo and so on (it's not that hard to steal a few images from the real site and make your fake look legitimate). She had entered her login credentials and even her social security number before she finally realized she'd been had.

Messages Marked as "Spam"

WA2UPK Emil

I have a subgroup that we used to get messages from non members and were held until they were
approved. As of 4/21/22 all have been marked as "spam" and never showed up to be approved.
They had been coming from the same email address for over 4 years without any problem.
Is there any way to mark them as not being spam?
Thanks,

I've been doing exactly the same thing for a non-profit I am associated with. If you have a single premium account and are the owner of the old groups, the procedure for each group is as follows:

1. Create a new subgroup of the premium group. Set permissions appropriately for the subgroup. Each subgroup can have different settings than the main group or other subgroups.

2. Download a CSV file listing the members of the old group. Go back to the old group. Click Admin->Members->Download. This will create a file named something like members-list.csv in your Downloads folder.

3. Edit the file to conform to the format accepted by the groups.io "Direct Ad" feature. Delete the first line, the title line. Change each of the rest of the lines to the format Name <e-mail Address>". For example, "John Doe <john.doe@...>".

4. Use the new file to add the members of the old group to the new sub group. Go back to the *main* group. Click Admin->Direct Add. Check the box to add? the members to the new subgroup. Fill in the box for a file to upload with the edited member file you created in step 3.

I wrote a bash script to do the conversion from the export format to the import format. If you want that (again, it's a bash script), send me an email. I also submitted a feature suggestion on the groups.io developers list that said the Direct Add feature should accept the same format as the Download feature.

Hi all,

When I moved our organisation's lists over from Yahoo! Groups a few years ago, I created everything as separate groups, so we now have 26 different groups in groups.io.

The groups all have slightly different memberships, but there is a lot of crossover. We have some groups that are public (can be joined with no approval) and some that need approval (we check that you're a member of our organisation before letting you in)

It sounds like it might be a good idea to have one main group and then make all of our discussion groups subgroups. (It sounds like that's how I should have done it in the first place.)

Why? For one thing, we're considering using Auth0 for single sign-on authentication (under their non-profit plan) and it seems that groups.io would require each group to be on the Enterprise plan to get the integration. That would add up to a LOT of money for our very small organisation.

Also it seems that administration might be easier, for me and for our members.

So, is there a way to move a regular group to become a sub-group of another group? I couldn't find anything in the Owners Manual or help pages.

Thanks,

Brendan.?
