Re: Apple Users not getting Special Notices from Group

I use Apple devices and get Special Notices. I'm also a group owner. When my members don't get a message, I ask them to check their spam/junk folder. If the messages are ending up there, adding the groups.io address to their ?trusted contacts usually solves the issue.

Bouncing (blue) means that Groups.io tried to send a message and got 'soft' errors or something like that.? If Groups.io tries 4 more times and doesn't get a good response, then the member becomes Bounced (red).? It's all explained in more detail in the GMF wiki and the Owners Manual.

Thanks. I've taken a mostly hands-off approach to things unless someone requests
help, figuring it's the member's responsibility to keep their email address
information current if they change addresses, or if they notice they stopped
getting messages.

So am I correct in understanding that once a member is bouncing, it won't fix
itself if it was a problem on the member's ISP end of things?

I just sent a bounce probe to the members in my largest group. I haven't gone in
there to see if the number on the bouncing list changed, but my guess is that it
hasn't.

Your wiki hasn't gone anywhere. You just can't access it via an outdated link.

Click on "Wiki" on the left-side menu bar. Scroll down to the bottom of the resulting page, and pull down the Pages menu. You should find all the pages still there.
?
Your task now is to every hyperlink in your group so they correctly point to the new page URLs. Or, you could just rename the group back to what it was.

The vast majority of bouncing email addresses are what are called "hard" bounces. The email address has simply become invalid. The user was getting their email through their ISP and switched to a different provider. They were using their work email and changed jobs. They deleted their hotmail/yahoo/gmail account. A "soft" bounce is one where the address is temporarily not working. That just doesn't happen much in the 21st century.

Here's a link to what groups.io does about email addresses that are bouncing:

/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/additional-information/groups-io-bounce-handling

If you're worried that an email address might still actually be good, you can send a member a bounce probe. They'll get a message that says they have to reply to tell groups.io they're still there. Or more accurately, that they are back. But again, most of the time, it won't do any good because they're just gone.

Bouncing email addresses clutter up your membership list but other than that, they don't do any harm. What you can do, if the clutter bothers you, is keep track of them in your mind and then after a few weeks/months, remove them.

Re: Odd reply-to-sender behavior #replytosender #question

Tim,

Would you by any chance have Plain Text set in your GIO main account editor preferences and you started that thread in your group?? Or possibly have your mail client configured to send text-only messages or display messages in plain-text or something?

When you reply to a message in this GMF thread, I receive your reply in my email client as a plain-text email with the text footers.? If others reply it comes out as regular HTML with the HTML footers.? How have you been replying to this thread, online or through an email client? There is no quoted text on any of your replies, which is the default of online replies, so I'm not sure.? GMF doesn't have any of those three message formatting settings checked AFAIK, which means if a message comes in a plain text, it's left as such and mailed out as text-only, meaning the text footers get added to it, and if the message came in as HTML, same process, left and emailed out as HTML, but with the HTML footers this time.? So you having your email editor/composition default to plain-text would cause this.

Please do play around in the test group as the experience will be beneficial to you, but I think if you only set the "Force HTML emails" in your live group it will fix the problem because even if someone with your send-plain-text setup sends in a message, it will get converted to HTML before it gets sent out (as HTML) hence the HTML footers will be added to it which have the Reply to Sender link.? You cannot change that email address obfuscation that's currently taking place.? Setting the reply option to Group and Sender can cause confusion and duplicate messages in certain types/instances of exchanges depending on who's participating and who's replying to whom, so for a neigborhood list, you may want to send the group reply to Group only, set the Force HTML option, then folks can use their email client's Reply button and they reply to the group, and in order to reply to the sender they click on the link at the message footer, they don't have to go online.? Or if your list is informational only, set the group reply to Sender, then all replies go to the sender, not quite sure what your list format is.

Cheers,
Christos

I think I'll have to create a test group to explore all of these options. Anyway, I'm not sure I want to impose Plain Text Only on the list, even though that's what I personally prefer. What I really want is a way to have the sender's real email in the Reply-To, so that no one has to leave their mail client just to send a response. (I'll poke around in the provided links.)

This is a peer-to-peer group - no managers here!

You can add a message footer in Admin, Settings, Message Formatting.

Tim,

>>> Would changing the group's Reply settings to "Group and Sender" address this

No.? Refer to the links Duane posted for more in depth info, but TL:DR, it looks like you have the "Plain Text Only" setting checked in the group's Message Policies settings, if you also check the "Force HTML Emails" option as well you'll then be able to still get a clean-looking group message sent out as before but the HTML footers will now be used at the end of the message (instead of what you're seeing now, the limited text-only footers).? The HTML footers are more functional and also include a "Reply to Sender" link.

Cheers,
Christos

Thanks for the link! The DMARC explanation kind of makes sense, although it means that non-tech-savvy users are going to hit reply-to-sender and have their message go into the bitbucket. I'm not sure what you mean about the footer. In the mailing list I manage, I just see a "View/Reply Online" line. Is there something missing from the plaintext mail (which is what I get, and I vague recall a thread on this...)? And is the idea that for some people I have to reply using the web client rather than my usual email client?

For myself, I can just use Reply To Sender and then edit the To line to be the real email address. But I'm concerned that the users on my neighborhood mailing list are just having messages go missing, and won't notice or know what to do about it. , without causing duplicate mail or other issues?
